Man this guy is a phenomenal teacher. Granted when I was younger I didn't give this the time and attention I should have but that is because a lot of this sounded like stuff that only classical composers would use. I mean it sounded like that because of the clumsy 2D way it had all been described to me before. I thought the only way I could get good was just practice scales, learn new chords and hope my ear did the rest. I'm too old now to "make it" but it was never about that. I wish this had been explained to me like this 30 years ago.

@@mikegeorge360I took a scale that a friend gave to me and mapped it out across all 24 frets on a sheet of tab. Took lessons 25 years later and said I wanted to understand the modes. Went thru each mode talking about how it applied to music. Wasnt until the end that I connected the dots looking at that piece of tab. Big explosion went off in my head followed by a big smile.

Solid video, well done. My one suggestion would be to start each progression example by playing the chords by themselves, without any vocals so we can really hear it, then maybe add the vocals the second time through.

What a great and educational video. The charts are so well done and clearly the result of in depth research and thinking this stuff through with a passion for truly understanding something that so many have tried to explain but few have been able to. The charts are truly helpful. The examples are very important and finally someone who can sing them to drive home the expression and feel of the music. Truly refreshing. One point that I would like to put on the table on this topic is that there is the tendancy to come away from this thinking that songs are written in different modes while this is indeed the case for some songs, most good songs do NOT employ a single mode, rather they employ multiple modes, and switch back and forth. This is important I believe to come to terms with, because if you really want to understand what makes a song special you have to know the modes and recognize how they are employed in the context of a song...amongst other things

Good explanation of modes! It would be wonderful to see modes explained in a jazz context by adding the 7th scale degree.
@nickofthenorthАй бұрын
UI learned modes by just learning the associated intervals. And when you know intervals you can just make up scales that may not be a mode exactly. For example I stumbled on a very exotic Egyptian sounding scale and I can communicate it to anyone by just saying Root (we’ll say G) , b2,3,4,5,b6, 7, R . There, now you know it. Alexa thinks it’s a Phrygian Major. (I told her intervals- she may or may not be right). Modes are like they say…so simple it’s hard lol. Knowing things like “Phrygian starts on the 3rd note of Ionian” is just one of a few ways to look at it but when I tried that approach I was confused.
