The circle of fifths is more useful than most people know. It's more than just a dusty, old diagram of key signatures. It's actually a powerful tool for songwriting that allows you to create chord progressions in any key and mode.

One of the clearest explanations of modes in the Circle of Fifths. As a beginner, I really appreciate this. There are several channels that try to explain things but they expect a higher understanding of music theory or technical ability. That is a real art. Merci beaucoup.

Thank you! Even the basic form of the Circle of Fifths is very useful. The self-similarity of the natural scale is the reason why key signatures even work. Of course, for the pure instrumentalist without any creative ambition it's just a lookup table, but if we look a little deeper, it becomes apparent that neighboring tonalities only differ by a semitone making the whole enchilada jump. It's noteworthy, I don't know it's being said. Another interesting thing to note, especially for adding a lead voice to our progression is that in the particular case of using a major chord for the dominant (5th chord, Phrygian mode) in a minor key, we might as well view this as a scale variation to a Harmonic or Melodic tonality. These shift the 7th note up by a semitone in order to create a Leading Tone, which happens to be the third in the Phrygian that gets elevated to a major one. In case of Melodic Minor, another way to describe its mode in the 5th, Phrygian position is to view it as Aeolian #3, which then would rotate the circle, but also possibly cause a mess? Which variant would be better? How best to apply the Circle of Fifths to altered scales in general?

Well done Mike, Took classical lessons as a kid and never delved big into the theory of the circle of fifths, just understood it as the trip up through the sharps and down through the flats. This tutorial makes it so easy to understand their relationships for song writing, or be able to listen to any song and recognizing the different modes or progressions used. Very cool.

You js helped me learn how to write a song, I needed to learn how to write a melody n what chords I’m on a learn I’ve always been stuck when it came to figuring out chords bc I’ve never knew about the circle of fifths until today which is really helpful you explain this so well and now I can song write for my school band n I could now understand my guitar more rather than just knowing “oh it js sounds write bc it music I mean idk how to make it myself all I know is that it sounds like music” but now I can make sense of it and have more creative liberties when it comes to understanding how to do that (new sub btw)

I've loved the Circle of Fifths for decades.. and your videos have been more than helpful in helping me to (re-)discover the uses for it. I'm glad you explained why you used the A Major chord in the Aeolian mode version of the 'Pachelbel' progression. as I *did* expect the A Minor there. ...but looking at the modes through 'the circle' is something I hadn't thought about for building progressions. Most helpful. Fanx! for posting :)

Thanks so much! With your ColorMusic ChordMap (excellent product!) and explanations, you have done a masterful job of compiling the bits of knowledge I have developed over the years into a far more useful physically condensed foundation upon which I will now continue to grow. Besides the colors, I've also found your use of the squares and circles to be exceptionally helpful to my thinking.

I've never played keys in my life and only took a brief, single semester guitar class in high school, which I failed. After a few videos and several hours just banging around on my midi controller, I feel like I am able to actually play. I even found a few basic progressions to existing songs just by listening for them and knowing now what chords look like and how they interact. Thank you for this video
