two other tips for the "r" besides gargling: it's exactly like the back-ch (the "ach-laut") except voiced. So, for "rot", try saying "chot" and adding voice to it. Second, it's in about the same spot where you make a "g" sound. So you can try making a "g", but trying to keep your throat closed while you do it and still force air through. It's hard to explain without showing, but I hope this was helpful for someone.

This video was super helpful!! I am an American living in Germany and some of these tips I never even thought about (SO!) I am glad to say I have no problem with the R or the CH sound though. It grinds my gears when I hear people talking like this.

I've been in Hamburg for a bit over a year now but I'm pretty sure there's some dialects around that pronounce ch quite like sch, maybe around Düsseldorf or Köln (last time I noticed it was in fact at one of those airports). I'd generally recommend if you find it hard to learn ch to try something towards h sound followed by k, if you then manage to drop the k while pronouncing h like so it should be ~correct.

Ich habe eins! Auf englisch sagt man, "the queen died IN 1901", aber auf deutsch sagt man nur "sie starb 1901", es gibt kein Präposition. :) ich mache immer diesen Fehler.

Man kann "im Jahr" oder "im Jahre" benutzen. Diese Ausdrücke sind zwar auch schon seltener geworden, aber sie werden immer noch benutzt. Das englische "in 1965" hört und liest man aber mittlerweile häufiger im Deutschen. Hier scheint sich der Sprachgebrauch wirklich etwas zu verändern. Es gibt ein paar solcher Anglizismen, die man nicht auf Anhieb als solche erkennt. Dazu gehört "etwas realisieren", oder dass etwas "Sinn macht", aber eben auch dieses "in...". Wer weiß, vielleicht wird das in wenigen Jahren schon die Chance haben, zu korrektem Deutsch zu werden? Sprache verändert sich schließlich fortwährend.

One tip for pronouncing the German 'r': Keep your tongue low! The American 'r' requires that you raise the tip of your tongue way up, but with the German 'r' , the tip of your tongue is all the way down. Just relax your tongue completely and make the sound in your throat/uvula (like when you gargle).

I grew up in Scotland and so I can roll "r" in a trilling sort of way (despite my English accent)- my wife is from the North of Germany and thus does that softer half-roll that I just can't get! - but, the upside is, this is the way you say "r" in Swedish, and I can do it perfectly while my wife, who speaks very good Swedish without a German accent (I've heard lots of Swedish people say so...) - can't do the Swedish "r"! Additionally, growing up in Scotland leaves you with no problems when it comes to "ch"!

Zum 'SO', es wird oft als also verwendet und zumindest in meinem deutschsprachigem Dialekt, wird davon als Abkürzung wieder so verwendet, wodurch diese Redeart wieder richtig ist, zumindest auf Südtirolerisch. (wird sogar sou ausgesprochen, wie im Englischen) Und wegen dem 'OR', verwende 'right?', es klingt auf jeden Fall besser.

I think you could have explained the differences much better! Esp. the last tipp: In most cases where an english speaker would use "so", a German would use "also": "Also, ich denke, dass das Essen nicht lecker war." Whereas "So, wollen wir mal gehen" is more like an invitation, equivalent to "now". "Now, shall we leave?"

Mein Lehrer hat mir etwas anderes über "wenn"-"als" gelehrt. Mann kann auch "wenn" in der Vergangenheit benutzen, aber wenn etwas mehrere Male in Vergangenheit passiert ist. "Als" wird benutzt wenn etwas nur einmal in der Vergangenheit passiert ist. Auf diese Weise, die Grammatikbücher dieses Thema auch erklären.

never mind the "r" i only started to speak it when i was 4 years old, it suddenly clicked. but i know so many people grew up speaking german who are not able to roll their "r"s ... you can drop (or nearly drop) a lot of those in the middle of words if they are after a vowel, it should almost sound like you put an 'a' (german a!) right after the vowel [eg.: über- übea, durch - duach, kurze - kuaze]

Für deinen Hinweis mit dem "r" gibt es einen genauen wissenschaftlichen Begriff. Man sagt, dass diese Arten/Akzente des Englischen (Amerikanisch, Schottisch, Kanadisch) "rhotic" sind. In "rhotic accents" wird das "r" betont und ausgesprochen. Dementsprechend heißt das Gegenteil "non-rhotic accent" (England, Australien, Neuseeland). Genauer findet man das heraus, wenn man sich den gleichen Text gesprochen von einem Amerikaner und einem Engländer in Lautschrift transkribiert ansieht. Im RP (britisches Standard Englisch) wird "r" nur in sehr seltenen Fällen transkribiert hingegen in GA (Amerikanisches Standard Englisch) so gut wie immer.

Bei Tipp Nr. 5 wäre es hilfreich gewesen, zu erklären, dass das englische "so" sowohl für "so" als auch für "also" und "somit" stehen kann, und es im Deutschen eben diese unterschiedlichen Wörter dafür gibt. (Als Begleiterscheinung hätte sich dann u. U. noch herauskristallisiert, dass das englische "also" ungleich dem deutschen "also" ist, was vielleicht dann doch eher zur Verwirrung beigetragen hätte)

Dana should go to the Odenwald (a part of Hessia), there they have a certain dialect with the american "R". --> Some Areas of Germany have this "R" too !

Der Unterschied zwischen "als" u. "wenn" habe ich fest gelernt. "Wenn" ist nämlich "if" auf Englisch. Manchmal kann auch "falls" sein. Und "als" ist Vergangenheit, wie Sie es gesagt haben.
