As someone with an eating disorder and a similar body type as you, I find your videos so helpful! I notice that the style of clothes that you advise against for our body type are often the same that trigger my body dysmorphia. I used to assume 100% of it was because I just wasn't thin enough, but after watching your videos, I realize a lot of my dissatisfaction with trying on certain clothes just has to do with my natural body type - 5'2" with a short inseam and a skinny apple shape. Your tips have inspired me to get rid of clothes that will just never work for me. Going forward I know how to be more realistic and selective about the clothes I try on. I have learned so much watching your videos. I didn't used to be petite as I was almost 5'5", but I have shrunk to 5'2" after hip and knee surgeries and a bit of scoliosis, so I needed to relearn how to dress. I also changed my eating habits to match and got down to normal 121 lbs. Learning to buy shorter jackets and tuck in my shirts, to make my legs look longer, gave me better proportions. Thanks so much.

I’ve never been able to fit my wide toes (C, or average width) into pointy shoes, but I feel stumpy in round-toe ones, especially flats. Almond toes are my favorite, and I like some elongated, soft-square ones, too. I think heel shape and height is really important, too, for setting the tone of the shoe and hence, the outfit. Medium heels, under 3”, forever!

I’m the same shape, I can relate, but I always tuck my tops in, belt them or wear waist-length ones. Maybe think about how much better your proportions look that way, rather than focusing on your middle? Our thick bods look much worse to us than they do to others and I think allowing a peek at the waist, with slight tuck in front, for example, always looks more flattering because the legs look so much longer, on every body. I also recommend structured jackets and dresses, I find that adding small shoulder pads can make a big difference. I wear belts that match my clothes, to give shape to loose items without a contrasting color emphasizing that my waist isn’t very defined. Try for verticality, monochrome outfits in any one color, more or less, vertical details like seams, front creases, rows of buttons or stripes, or lighter jacket/coat over dark column (top and bottom), visible ankles and lower calves, forearms, vertical open necklines, comfy mid-heels and full-length straight or wider-leg trousers. No tight or oversized clothes, choose those that follow, but don’t squeeze, your shape. Not that anyone asked me, LOL! It’s a challenge, I know, but there are lots of flattering things we can do, these are some of my faves after decades of styling my columnar, short shape, hope some work for you, friend🙂

I have the black and white plaid very similar. Is so cozy bulky and all but I live it. Wear with black skinny jeans and black sweater or turtleneck and boots. It looks rather cute kind of? I’m in S.California where everything is possible. Lol! When I arrived to this country we landed in Chicago for 4 years there it gets more dressy I miss seeing handsome tall men in a trench coats in downtown and the beautiful decorations. Had an aunt who worked in Marshall’s Field’s that was fancy!

I did my own version of the plaid coat with a beautifu black/white plaid Tilley shirt. It comes out at a perfect length for petites when worn outside the pants/jeans unbuttoned.

Don’t forget you can sometimes help a long coat that’s shapeless by adding a belt. A thicker with and either matching or contrasting color. And for sweaters a long sash. There is also the option of tucking in sweaters - even cardigans if they are smaller & thinner. You crisscross the front and it looks really kind of cute. Or you put a thin belt at the very bottom of it at your waist and fold over The sweater to cover the belt. Also you can just leave the coat open if it’s warm enough out. If you have a mono chrome shirt and skirt or shirt and pants that creates one long line in the middle. I have learned a lot from Chi, check out her other videos!

Your videos are really helpful for short women. I do think that "mulberry silk" is a deceptive term though. It simply means that the caterpillars are fed exclusively on mulberry leaves before they spin their cocoons. They are then killed before they can hatch into moths, and the silk from the cocoon is unwound into a long fibre. Not very kind to the animals.

I so agree, it is very deceptive. This brand makes their representatives say it’s “sourced from mulberry trees”, but it’s really made from the cocoons spun by silk worms, who eat the mulberry leaves. It took a considerable amount of the pleasure out of wearing silk for me when I learned a few years ago that the worms were traditionally boiled alive to harvest the silk fibers. I hope they use a more humane, instant, non-painful process now. I don’t have a big choice, being allergic to practically everything else under the sun, though. I still love wearing silk, but the guilt is always present, too, I prefer not to hurt any creature, ever. For the same reasons, I wear genuine leather instead of plastic, but at least the cattle are used for meat, not just for a luxury fabric like silk. It’s impossible for any of us humans to achieve moral purity, we can only do our best and make the compromises we can live with not too uncomfortably. (I refuse products, including foods, from juvenile animals like lamb and veal, and those exclusively raised for fur, but there is really no moral difference between harvesting silk and fur whatsoever. It’s just that I don’t need fur (some people do) but I do need clothing and footwear. Down and rabbit: my feeble justification, again, is that the geese and rabbit are used for food, too. Even honey and dairy products are stolen from animals. These are tough decisions for us all, we can only do our best to minimize the harmful effects of our choices. Plastics (synthetic materials included) are very harmful to wildlife and the environment, too.🙂

I saved up for and got three new pairs of knee-high boots this autumn. Every pair is two inches or more too high in the shaft, and although supposedly slim-fitted styles, enormous around the ankle and calf (and I’m not even slender!). Also, they have those really stingy, four inch zippers. Cheap ones, too, zipping and unzipping them is a nightmare, even with zipper lubricant added, my usual trick. These weren’t low price, they were about $200 to $250 per pair, really, how much more would it cost to use a full-length, YKK zipper (best in industry)? One pair turned out to be plastic, with a plastic lining, too, just to guarantee I’ll get Athlete’s Foot, once in my teens was enough for life, it took years to get rid of, is as miserable as bad poison oak, and the boots that caused it were unlined, genuine suede! But, I wore them too often, since I never rewear a pair of closed-toe boots or shoes (or plastic) within a single week, which is why have so many. Come on, Nordstrom, if we search for genuine leather, as I did, don’t offer plastic ones, it never occurred to me that it would, or I wouldn’t have bought them! It irritates me that the quality of everything is so crappy nowadays and that most items don’t work for us petites. And I’m 5’4.5”, really not a petite at all, it’s just that everything is designed for 6-foot tall models. The average woman in the US is 5’4” and a size 16, not 6 feet and a size 2, wake up designers! You’re not only alienating, but losing, your buyers! We demand decent quality and fit, so get your act together, we’re voting with our pocketbooks.

AGREE! it’s like they want us to waste our money or some thing? like they want us to feel bad enough about ourselves that we are willing to go into debt buying things over and over. And one painful pair of high heels after another. Another interesting fact is that average height in the US is 5 foot FOUR! That means that half of us are 5 foot three or less. That is not freakish that is normal. The industry needs to respond to that. I wonder if all this aggravation is because designers for the most part are idealizing more masculine looking bodies? When I was growing up petite in women was actually favored. In fact it’s even mentioned in some hit songs. But then when I got into high school in the 70s all of a sudden everyone wanted to look like a model. Whose frames ostensibly can really pile on lots more layers of clothes, generating more sales for designers. I have a bit of anger about this because they gave me a complex. And now I see the same thing happening to my petite daughter. so it really is important to patronize petite designers like Chi and also petite lines. It’s even actually a subtle insult to call us petite, especially if most of us are around average. Why don’t they label what they call regular “Amazon”? Lol

I buy most of my wardrobe in silk, mostly from Lily Silk, or Equipment, Reformation (mostly too low cut) or Quince. My skin is so sensitive that I can’t stand anything else around my neck, for one thing. Allergies to synthetic fibers can develop with repeat exposure, that’s what happened to me. I got tired of buying fast-fashion that looked fine, but that after one miserable wearing, I didn’t want to wear ever again. Now, I buy fewer and better items, all in natural fibers.

I love silk too. I bought two Equipment silk button down shirts second hand. The sizing is so off-they are huge and so long, totally covers my butt. Maybe they are not cut for petite women? I have a quince silk shirt, size small, also on the loose end. I guess I have to size down? What’s your experience with the sizing of silk garments?

Hi Chi - your videos are so helpful. Lilysilk looks so beautiful, and I especially love the silk shirts, but do they fit petites? Regular size shirt sleeves are usually much too long on my petite frame. I would love to get your recommendations.

Thank you Christine! I normally go with 3/4 sleeves and hip length tops on their site and those fit quite well. Skirts- I go with short to midi. Their silk pjs now have a service to customize pants length- I had it shortened to be 25 inch and fits perfectly. Would cost the same to tailor at my local places.

Lily Silk does free custom-sizing now, I just got my first such item from them, khaki green silk cargo joggers, and am very happy with them. I’m petite, too, but not skinny like Chi. I do recommend adding an inch to the body measurements you give them if you like a slightly relaxed fit, theirs is classic-fit. I could have used an extra inch in the waist and rise of my joggers, and perhaps the leg length, but I like my clothes slightly loose. Hope this helps, friend🙂
