I've talked with so many fine woodworkers over the years that don't have a clue about the metal in their chisels. Pretty handles and fancy logos are more important buying features. So thanks for knowing that good, hard steel that will take and hold an edge are the most critical feature in chisels and many other tools.

A chisel that can cut end grain like that with as much ease as your video suggests is impressive, to say the least, you wouldn't want an idle minded person getting their hands on it to open up paint cans.

I had been holding off on buying chisels since I wanted to buy ones that I'd be happy to use regardless of my skill level. Back around August or September I watched a video on Wood by Wright's channel where he performed a fairly comprehensive analysis on several lines of chisels and the Narex Richter, with the data given, were indicated as being the best all-rounder for edge retention, sharpenability, performance in both hard and softwoods, as well as price. At the time I could only afford two and my project required two sizes of chisels, so I purchased the 1/4" (6mm) and 1/2"(13mm) widths. They are an absolute joy to work with and sharpen in no time at all. I will definitely be picking more up as finances and projects permit.

I went with the Dustopper for use with my shop vac. I looked at a couple of other cyclonic products but didn't want to spend $150-200 on a system. Dustopper cost about$50 and works great! It even separates out cotton wood tree cotton. The only time I need to clean my filter now is when I use it while cleaning up after sweeping my woodstove pipe. I don't think there is a better product anywhere that's beats it for value.

@@davebennett5069 Wood moves and there is no 2x4 that is perfectly straight. Now, some folks make edge guides with MDF or plywood. Those are decent, but the longest one-piece you'd be able to make is 96". This is extruded, machined aluminum that isn't affected by humidity or warpage, has built-in clamps, and two sections equal 100", so it gives you a stabile edge leading into and out of a rip cut on plywood.

The Mortise Master looks great and a much cheaper alternative to a Festool Domino. The bared chisels look very good too, though in truth, I don’t think I’ve ever needed a fine bevel edge on a chisel bigger than 1/4” for those dovetail corners.

I've made wooden "router pods" myself, with rubber feet. One thing I do is use my CNC to cut a shallow recess just bigger than the baseplate of the router so that the bit is always centered in the hole and I'm less likely to accidentally chew up the "pod". This also negates the need for the anti-slip material on top. I've made them double sided with one size/shape of baseplate on one side and a different one on the other. They have feet on both sides outboard of the recesses so I can just flip it over and use it for a different router. They are really handy for repetitious work like small radius or chamfers on multiple pieces and when mortising hinges on a batch of doors and jambs. Sometimes I don't even turn the router off. I have something similar for my random orbit sander. In my case the front handle fits in a socket that suspends the router. If you don't have a front handle then a u-shape that fits the narrow part of the body will work. I have a bench top version and one that clamps to the edge of the bench for a lower "reach". They work much better than the commercial "sander sitter" IMO.

I bought a set of the in ear iso tunes a few months ago. Another cool feature is you can connect two different phones. Unfortunately I have to carry a work phone (which rings way too much) and my personal phone is used for music, pod casts, etc. Its nice that I can leave the ear buds in and manage 2 phones without having to pull the buds out to dig in my pocket to fish out whatever phone is ringing. That was a cool feature to discover when I started using them.

Hi James, i've made just a few simple planes used basically to clean up awkward dados & rabbets. What I got the most use out of was planes to clean up extremely worn aluminum window guides. 1 set was used to remove the sharp edges on both sides of the guides & to remove jagged edges to allow easy window operation. These were sort of last chance repair tool sets on company housing. Necessity is a mother (period)!😉✌ Great video.

A ward about NRR ratings: That is in decibels - "C" weighted (dBC). So your NRR 27 (dBC) will reduce sound levels by 27 dbC, most equipment is measured in decibels - A weighted (the ear's frequency response). Your NRR rating is reduced by 7 dB (e.g. NRR 27 - 7 dB).

I have a love hate relationship with woodworking. Hate the cost for an idea shop but love using quality tools and great advice. Your KZbin channel is in my opinion the best out there. By the way, how's you hand done on healing. Split of a nanosecond can result in a bad injury to body parts. People need to be aware that hand tools can also be dangerous. Chisels, hammers, hand saws, screwdrivers and knives etc... I recommend you highlighting a few reminders on this subject. Yes I know it can be redundant, but all of us could use reminders often. My main profession was a machinist for over 40 years. Woodworking as a teenager gave my baseline skills in metal working. Granted, I used CNC equipment in a factory setting for a majority of my machining years. Actually I was the only programmer that knew the language of some of the old CNC equipment that was common 20 years ago. I just begun my social security disability this last month due to my feet and legs. I just bought some wood working tools for some ideas for extra income and I love the refreshing pointers of your programs. Thumbs up on all you videos!

While I like Narex Chisels and always thought they were a great value and good quality. One thing you didn't notice on the Richter Chisels was when they polished the backs, they most likely used a buffing wheel of some kind, and it rounded the sides off a bit leaving a radius on the corner. This was all the way to the tip. it took me better than 90 minutes of a lot of elbow grease per chisel to take the back down to a reasonably useable condition. Since that they are great but the claim by Narex that the back needs little or no work is not true at least with the set I received.

I also love the chisels. I have never done a dove tail joint. Did my first box joint on my table saw building drawers this summer. It was cool, but daunting. Built a sled and ran 3/4 ply through it. Cool part was it was so tight I didn’t just eliminate my need for fasteners but glue as well. It was super tight. I know it was a rookie mistake. Yet not bad for no feeler gauge. It was neat to play though. Most of what I do is regular finishing work. Door installs, base, casings, liners, I am boring myself mentioning it. Love the shop stuff. Love the down home feel. Love that you help out your local businesses. It’s the way it should be, cheers!

Thanks for the latest update. Appreciate the mini reviews. The ISO tunes headset appears to have a nice airgap when wearing a hat as shown. The cups seem quite long (that's just an observation), but I would think it would prevent an effective seal with a hat which is critical to prevent sound leaks. The seals would have to be very soft to conform, which would also make them have shorter lifespans.
@StumpyNubs
@StumpyNubs 3 жыл бұрын
They seal around my hat very well. I am not sure what's in the padding, but it seems like there may be a very soft layer just under the surface, then a more dense layer under that. That may be why they conform to the hat and seal well. But I'm just guessing since I don't want to dissect mine to be sure :)

Depending on the tracksaw brand they make router attachments. The bosch I have has an option and of course Festool does. Not sure about the Dewalt or Makita options though. but since the makita can use the festool rails you could probably use the festool option, but not 100% sure on that. The dust collection to me was worth getting a tracksaw vs a circular saw guide system. I love how your channel doesn't just use all the festool fancy stuff though. Makes your at home hobby wood worker feel more like they can actually do a lot more since a lot of the other channels just show every top dollar tool.

That Bora NGX actually looks really interesting. I had almost given up on edge guides as every single one I've found just didn't live up to expectations and frankly was barely better than just clamping a regular straight edge. This one actually looks really well designed and honestly the price is far more reasonable than I anticipated.

I, too, was pretty impressed with the prices of the Bora NGX saw plate. It's interesting, though, there are a lot of negative reviews - mostly indicating that it doesn't hold very well on the saw. Have you purchased it? What's your feeling on how it clamps to the saw? I've got some similar edge guides already (had 'em for years) and would love to find out that the saw plate would fit on them!

@@bretts4343 I hadn't gotten around too it just yet as the stack of projects I had didn't involve any plywood. That said, I will probably be picking it up here in the next month or two tops as I have a few things coming up. I'll try to remember to post my thoughts on it here. I imagine that how well it holds on the saw might be more related to the particular saw used than anything.

I would have had to re-polish the back of those. Don't care if it took an extra hour, it would have been worth it. I don't often give too many fucks about the look of my tools but when they start out that damn pretty the extra effort of the creator should be respected.

Would be REALY cool if you did one of these videos about wood turning tools specifically. I have already bought a couple of your recommended tools including the CBN wheels from woodturners wonders and more recently the Harvey HW615 15” Industrial Bandsaw to be delivered soon. I love the CBN wheels. Only wish I had found them sooner. I am sure I will enjoy the bandsaw also. Great stuff. always look forward to your videos?

I use Carter and Son turning tools as much as I can. Best in the business, both in quality and service. It's another great family business.

Great upload this my man. My teacher told me about narex he loves them and I already have them on my mind, would live a set but cant get them yet. However that cyclone looks interesting. much better than diy solutions, would love something like that for my metabo, anything that saves on bags and filters without compromising suction power is a must imho. PS. I wont mention earphones for the workshop in the class or he will fail me forever, dismissed, gulag...

Nice review and I too like to support the little guy. I have the original ISO Tune ear buds and the one thing I really dislike is the flimsy cover that goes over the charging connector. I surprised I haven’t lost it yet. I complained to the company and their comment was this was going to be fixed in the new version. Wonder if they did but I’m not buying a new set to find out.

A BIG thank you for the ISOTunes Link. I needed an over the ear replacement (my gun muffs just were too fragile) and pre-ordered a set.

I'm on my 2nd set of Isotunes Pro. They still suffer from connection issues. Why? I do not know. I am looking at the "IsoTunes Free" because I hate the rubber cord as it sticks to my neck. They should move to a braided cord so that it won't stick to your neck. I've had to move to the unsafe "Cord in the front" look, and yes, it has gotten caught. I dislike over the ear hearing protection (just me), so the Iso Tunes free are looking better and better for me.
