Gary, You may not realize that your accounts of cruising have secondary benefits. Obviously, you provide great information and shared insight for those intent upon booking a cruise. I wish we had your site for reference before we took the few cruises we experienced. However, the quality of your video productions is so good that those people who cannot physically accept the challenge of a cruise and those who cannot afford the cost of a cruise are getting a very enjoyable glimpse of what cruising is like. I’m sure you gave it little thought when you started these reports, but you are performing a dual service. Thank you.

Never on a maiden voyage again. Sailed on Celebrity Millilium it was a nightmare. Everything that could go wrong did. The ship even shut down in Germany and had to be towed. Fire extinguisher were flying off walls. It became funny after a time.

You're so right about avoiding maiden cruises. Years ago the Celebrity Millennium was brand new and the first voyage was canceled. We had chosen the second sailing and it turned out to be the actual first cruise. There were engine problems and the ship had to put in at Rostock for repairs. We really enjoyed the cruise, but had to be flexible and roll with the punches.

Thanks Gary. Great advice. I would like to add "Repositioning Cruises" are ok if you travel on the lower priced cabins. If you are thinking of travelling suite class avoid these and discounted cruises. You will find your suite class privileges will be swamped with "loyalty" passengers. I always cruise suite class and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the concierge lounges. Unfortunately I made a mistake and in one "Repositioning" cruise, the lounges became a packed local hotel because of the "Happy Hour" for loyalty passengers, and so was the suite class dining room. I don't want to sound too snobbish, I came from a very humble and impoverished background, but now that I can afford some of these luxuries, I like to enjoy them according to what I paid for.

Good advice Gary, however, avid cruisers would take just about anything right now- that would include a 2-3 day maiden voyage biker themed cruise during peak season.

I was on a ship's last cruise of the season. The crew spent a large amount of time preparing the ship for winter dry dock. They were to leave the ship one to two days after the passengers disembarked. Too much counting, stowing supplies and general running around. I have cruised with this line previously so I was surprised at the difference on the last cruise of the season.

Taster cruises. Can’t agree. Have done two. First with girlfriends who had never cruised before, and quite frankly were terrified. All of them ever since cruised and all of them are hooked. It was absolutely perfect just to have those two nights away, and we didn’t have any of the troubles that you described. The second one I went on was right at the beginning of Covid before we knew how devastating it was going to be. It was my husband and I are taking our family of children and grandchildren and their very first Cruise. My son suffers from anxiety, and cannot travel on planes and trains and he thought ships . It was a joy to watch their excitement, and especially my son relax and really enjoy the full experience. On the second day he was trying to book another cruise, that’s how successful it was

Good tip on staying away from themed cruises, I've only come across those a couple of times and they weren't that intrusive. I will check in the future to stay off of those. I have been on an inaugural cruise with Princess, but, it wasn't on purpose, that ship jsut fit our schedule and desired itinerary. Thanks again for these updates.

Good pointer about ships just out of drydock. It happened to me once with Carnival, and even though there were workmen making some minor noise during the day, Carnival stepped up and provided passengers with a 25% refund and a FCC. In contrast, HAL wouldn't do anything when my cabin's A/C broke after night 2 of a Mexican cruise. My reaction was adios HAL.

well currently, passengers on the Horizon are complaining about paltry compensation for two cancelled ports as the ship limps back to port after having recently been repaired - oops, guess they didn't fix the problem. Again, engine speed problems common on their Vista ships. Liberty is being pressed into service sooner than planned, to cover the cancelled cruises. It wasn't supposed to go back to sea until next year. Will be interesting to see what happens

My family went on the final cruise of Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, Sun Viking back in November of 1977. I was 14 then. Not only was it the last voyage of that cruise but it stopped in a port that would have a coup attempt 3 months later. The cruise was awesome and nothing noticeable as far as it preparing to be cut in half to become one of the massive ships that are now popular. The port of call that was about to have a coup was horrible! There were soldiers on every corner of every intersection with machine guns and the tension was intense! Memorable, but traumatic!

Thank you for all the tips! It makes me think how lucky I've been, as I have never heard of or experienced any of this. I've never even heard of "shakedown voyages," though maybe I'm not enough of a cruise fan yet to be excited to book a maiden voyage. Even being a fairly inexperienced cruiser, I already knew I wanted to steer clear of 2 and 3 day getaway cruises. It's crossed my mind, but for me it never looked worth it. Besides the fact that you're not onboard long enough to feel like you've actually VACATIONED, I've heard many times that the food is not as good. The longer cruises seem to have more emphasis on good food, and the food scene is every bit as important to me as the rest of the cruising experience. Thanks for the wonderful tips, Gary! Many happy voyages to you!

that back in 1998, my son's high school band booked a 3 day cruise out of Galveston to Cozumel and back. Our group consisted of 85 high school band members, 10 adults, and the band director and his spouse. Without any advanced notifications by Royal Caribbean; after boarding the ship. we found that there was also a larger group of LBGTQ members that were also on board. Although our group was not offended in any way; after returning, we did have to explain to some parents, why their students were exposed to this group of people. Several students voiced events they had seen or experienced on board after returning home. Luckily, both Twitter, Tik Tok and other social media outlets were not as popular as they are today! The other group had reserved several of the venues for their events, meetings, etc. and therefore closed those venues to other paying guests. However, our entire band was able to perform a concert n the large theater during the afternoon to any passenger who wished to attend. Word quickly spread around the ship after our band's performance, and other guests requested a second performance. We were given permission for smaller groups (ensemble) to play in public areas such as the pool area. We were also able to have a picture taken in the atrium with band members in uniform standing on each of the spiral staircases, the ship's captain, cruise director, members of the senior staff, band director and wife, and several photo bombers.

Hi Gary, I would also add avoid Christmas cruises, unless you want to experience a Christmas cruise. They are very popular and busy. This is most likely common sense mind you, but I remember being on a Christmas cruise, and some of the folks when we first got on the ship said, “There sure are a lot of kids on here!” I think some people may be under the impression where it’s Christmas, most families will be staying home to be together. So the boats will be less empty/more relaxing. It’s not necessarily the case.

Great advice, as always. In 1997 I was on not only a Maiden Voyage, but the first paid cruising of a new line. Suffice it to say, "Never Again." I also did a 3 night cruise once as part of a B2B--as you said, the passenger behavior was very different than on the longer portion on the same ship. Dry dock, same--they were tearing out the carpet on the last night of our cruise! No, it didn't really matter as it was the last night, but you have the right idea. And I've saved a lot of money on those "shoulder" seasons.

Agree 100% with Maiden Voyage but had a different experience with a cruise I got off of the Ovation of the Seas. It was a "simulation" volunteer cruise and almost everything was spot on. I did have a problem in the dining room 1 night with an inexperienced waiter but that was it. Many of the experienced crew are stuck in their home country but are getting back slowly but surely. Theme and ships going or coming out of dry dock can have some building or carpet changing type things happening right on your cruise while it's going...lol and always interesting as they want to get a head start on the dry dock...good tips especially for people who want things a certain way.

I booked really early for a cruise on P&O Aurora in October 19. A little time after I booked it was announced it would be a ‘Music Festival At Sea’ cruise. A classical music cruise. I don’t mind a little classical music. However what I wasn’t expecting was that it practically took over. Most nights in the theatre it was Opera. The people who went in the cruise for the event took over somewhat, even though they were a minority of about 35%. They were also pretty demanding of the team on board. They were probably used to a more upscale cruise brand and expected extra special attention. The crew were run ragged. I hadn’t expected this level of takeover which for the majority of other passengers was a little to the detriment of the cruise! So yes, I agree! Avoid themed cruises!

@@kirstybrown1185 They've actually been cutting ships in half to enlarge them for a long time. Royal Caribbean did it with Song of Norway and Enchantment of the Seas, Silversea with the Silver Spirit...MSC is doing it with four ships. There have been many others, as well. There are lots of photos online and even some time lapse videos on KZbin.

Our first cruise was themed and a maiden voyage- and a transatlantic vogage at that. However the Norwegian Breakaway was only 80% full, and our themed party was only about 1% of the total- so we had a brilliant time and everyone else just didn't notice we were there.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but.... look at how life is for this part of the world - cruises, luxury, food, shows... , and then automatically my mind returns to reality. Remembering there is the other part of our world - starving, sick, and only focused on literally surviving. 😰

Sorry, but are you saying people are supposed to live their lives in misery because of what is going on in other parts of the world? Or people should be guilt ridden because they were fortunate enough to live in a part of the world were they can have nice things and others dont? How do you know that someone that is going on their first cruise grew up with nothing and saved up for months or years to go on a cruise and will probably never be able to go on another one? How do you know if some of the cruise goers arent millionaires and spend a lot of time and/or money to help those less fortunate. To insinuate that people should feel bad for enjoying something, or even not do something luxurious at all, because of the unfortunate circumstances of others, is pretty crazy.

If you are ok with light rain and cooler temperatures (eg: Pacific Northwest, Northern Europe, UK) then shoulder alaska is awesome. The light rain helps drive the crowds away, making for a much easier time. Also the pools are practically deserted when it rains a bit. I spent a very enjoyable time in the hot tub with my wife and another couple, all of us from the PNW. Sure it was 8C, but that was fine with the hot tub, and nobody else was around.

EXCELLENT advice. I would also recommend that younger folks steer clear of cruises on Vintage ships. These tend to be patronized by the Grey hair set and they are what I can only describe as Slow & Boring. Some friends and I took one of these because we liked the itinerary but were always behind a painfully slow like of folks using walkers and wheelchairs. Not to berate the disabled but why the heck are they always first in line getting off/on the ship. But the good news is you’ll have the Ship to yourself at night. The nightlife is basically You. On this cruise we were the only people in the Lounge and the bartender was so lonely he was giving us free drinks so we would stay and he then looked busy. We gave him a TIP he’ll never forget.

Maybe someday you'll be older and infirm or you will someday be disabled. You might then appreciate the courtesy of being in the front of the line, or being given the chance to board the ship first and get settled before the hordes surround you. Does it really inconvenience you all that much to graciously let someone go before you?

@@Carolmaizy Hahaha…..I’m “75” now. But I still get a kick out of standing in a slow moving line with someone in a wheelchair at the front of the line. I know that sounds cruel but I really don’t get that upset about it. I’m in no particular hurry either. I was just offering an observation. On the cruse we were on it worked out okay but us folks got a laugh out of the fact that the slow folks were always in front. It’s like traffic. You can only go as fast as the slowest vehicle ahead of you. I’m a people watcher. Like how many times has someone blown past you on the Highway and you pull up next to them at the next Red Light? Have a nice day today.
