6 cylinder diesel engine driving 3300 gpm center pivot irrigation pump (Rode Videomic.m2ts)

This diesel engine is driving a 3300 gallons per minute (gpm) water pump to supply water to a half mile long center pivot in order to irrigate crops in Mississippi County, Arkansas during the drought in late August 2012. This is original .m2ts format video shot on a Panasonic TM900 camcorder with a Rode Videomic Pro. Don't judge the capability of the TM900 by this video--this is not as sharp as other postings of mine because I had a cheap and not completely clean Vivitar UV filter installed. I now have a B+W UV filter and am obsessive about keeping that clean.

Enjoyed your video John. I remember growing up in Lockney and surrounding area was open ditch with aluminum siphon tubes down the rows. Depending on the size tubes , usually 2” you might have 30 or more per change of watering cycles. Burlap canvas tarps were used to hold the water back as the tubes pulled water from the ditch and down the rows. Usually took 12 hours for a set to reach the end with the next set ready to go further down the ditch. Loved seeing that water coming out of the pumps and running down the ditch. Those days are long gone now because of the shortage of water now in our area and sprinklers are more efficient. So glad I grew up where I did and irrigation was done back in the old days ! 👍

I actually am interested in historical practices so thanks very much for the history lesson. There's not a lot of publicity about how they did all this before center pivots and laser leveling fields for poly pipe irrigation. Thanks again for taking the time to add some historical context.

@@jasperedwards81 ….. you’re very welcome John. I love these things !!! My wife and I go out on evening drives just to hear these engines running and seeing the orange hot manifolds glowing in the darkness as well as the blue flames coming out the tips of the headers. This is on 350 Chevy engines that run off of natural gas. One place in particular where I live just east of town has a set-up like I just mentioned to run a complete center pivot set up as well as poly-pipe ( heavy weight plastic flexible tubing ) that connect to the water valves that are spaced maybe 60’ apart that allows for down the row water application. Pretty neat set-up because each outlet on the poly-pipe has pop-out stoppers that you remove to allow the water to run down each outlet or if you want to skip a couple of rows you just leave them in or pop them back in place to stop the water. Also , drip irrigation is becoming more prevalent here as the area water levels in the aquifers continue to drop. My favorite way of irrigation is just a memory of my childhood now because of the large waste of water way back when !!! Very nice communicating with you John.

I'd love to discuss the technology further. You can email me if you want. Regarding the 4 cylinder issue, the farmer who installed this engine specifically told me that people had told him a 4 was not enough for a 1/2 mile long center pivot and that's why he spent $14,000 8 years ago for the 6 cylinder engine.

3300GPM? Good lord you could run a ton of 200 series guns with that pump. I’ve seen a lot of P200s around Indiana and Michigan that run off high volume pumps like this and the range they get is crazy. Those old vintage guns are beasts.

I know it's not very manly to do this, but I'd put a guard over that drive shaft, especially that close to he clutch lever. Many "man" cards played on the farms that caused countless limbs and lives to be lost. A shaft at that RPM will happily take a life and it will be an ugly sight. Otherwise, that's quite a beast of a system! ;)

Thanks. The whole rig is awesome and I still marvel at it. Apparently this length of pivot is unusual for the county and have heard only one other farmer using one that long and it came up only because I asked about the engine and it is a 6 cylinder tractor engine and it was decided to get that more expensive engine because the other farmer had tried it with a 4 cylinder and it simply lacked the power to do the job well under all conditions.

I know that is the future. In my case, it will mainly be up to the farmer as to when he feels it is economical and efficient to convert. I know he hates his diesel bill so I believe he will be interested in electric maybe sooner rather than later. Back when I filmed this, no one had electric. I have no idea what the percentage is now but I'm sure it's increasing, probably faster in some places than others.

Do you work for a irrigation company or is this just a hobby? For me it's just a hobby as I've loved this stuff since i was a kid. Although my parents never EVER let me get near it especially the big guns! Back when i was a kid i never knew the big guns could hurt or kill you. I have respect for them now. The output of these pumps is crazy! I know from seeing firefighters put out fires that water pressure is equally as dangerous.

How often do you water in a drought? Do you water until the irrigation system completes 1 circle? How long does that take? How many acres? How many gallons of water used? Thanks.
@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 3 жыл бұрын
It could probably be set up differently but as I understand it, this only ever makes half a circle because it is a windshield wiper style center pivot which is only designed to do a 1/2 circle and it is doing about 250 acres. During drought you'd water more often. No idea on gallons because water itself in this County by the Mississippi River is essentially free. As set up normally, it takes 48 hours to do just a complete half circle. There are controls which would allow you to shorten or lengthen that interval according to my understanding.

I belong to agriculture family,, we have shortage of water for traditional irrigation and i suppose this is solution....can you please give your thoughts on cost of having such system,,,i have had look into Javelin RM Low Pressure Boom and many more,,what are your thoughts...???
@jasperedwards81
@jasperedwards81 10 жыл бұрын
I don't know all the alternatives available or the costs thereof. However, the cost of the pivot shown in this video now would be considerably over $120,000 and the diesel engine would be at least another $15,000 if not quite a bit more (this engine cost $14,000 about 8 years ago). Those costs don't include drilling the well and pump which would be at least another $15,000 more. This stuff is very expensive and becoming more so every year. The one positive thing about this area of the country is that there is almost unlimited ground water so if you get the right pumping equipment, there is no limit to how much you can pump.

John Edwards ,, Just a quick question,,,,does it matter on type of soil this sort of system is used,,, because i think, if we have hard top soil, water will not penetrate into roots, which will be a problem,,,,,i think its not use-full for crops such as rice,,,where roots must stay wet all the time,,,and on other had,, if we have sandy soil,,,and growing mustard or Guar (Guar Gum seeds),,, i suppose this system is best,,,please share your thoughts,,, GURBHAGWAN brar - what you got say mate on such systems in Punjab/Rajasthan, India.....???

Because the Mississippi River is only 20 some miles away to the east, the water table is so high that wells only need to go about 100 feet! And, apparently, that is not going to change no matter how much anybody pumps because of the constant recharge by the river.

If the question is how deep do you need to drill to get water, the answer is 100 feet or less. The Mississippi River continually recharges the ground water in Mississippi County Arkansas and I feel totally blessed that all our land is in a county that never has to worry about the water table dropping. No matter drought or how much anyone else uses, the water table remains constant here and considering the scary effects of future climate change, this is one thing I feel reassured about.
