Oh yeah, and that's only possible now that they've been going for so long and building up a backlog of incomplete projects, and it sounds dope!. It would also be awesome if similarly they used the final video builds of games that went on to see further development and a full time release, and the prompt was to recycle the incomplete version into a new game, so imagine visual and story overhauls, recycling one mechanic's code with some adjustments to do something very different, etc.

REAL, I cannot believe they chose the FPSengine guy over him, I don't think I've ever seen that guy in one of these videos where he didn't just fallback on his FPS engine, he cannot make a game without it he is incapable. I also despise that pixel filter, when I see it in any game I immediately drop the game because it's just such an immediate sign that the devs do not care about putting effort into graphics, they just slap a pixel filter over and call it a day. I dropped the video after the laziest dev I've ever seen in my whole life was chosen over that other dev with his unique and interesting concept

Exactly! it's a game jam, right? Did they have rules against using store assets? And he could have just added his own art style in the next round since the gameplay was pretty good... gives the entire competition little credibility in my opinion. I actually really liked the stealth shapeshifting game. I don't know why it got eliminated so early, especially for something as trivial as the dev using an easy art style. Low Poly is so common because it's fairly cheap and easy to use, and this is a timed contest, so I don't know why the dev is being punished for using it.

@PrimeTime0 I don't think it's unreasonable to use premade assets - especially since being a good game developer has no bearing on artistic or modeling skill. He might just not have been good at / comfortable with 3D modeling, and unless he has the money to blow to hire someone to model for a competition game like this, what choice did he have? And also, not every stealth game is hitman. Believe it or not, it's actually a pretty diverse genre.

I don’t mean to hate and congrats but nerdchomps game looked unfinished and the art style really didn’t click with me, the contrast in how the bug and the environment looked was just strange and it was still just a bug trying to get over rectangles to the other side. LazyTeas project seemed much more finished with better UI and graphics as long with better implemented mechanics and a story! I get the devs didn’t want more mechanics in his game but he wanted to expand on it in his own way. Another thing is that Nerds UI seemed clunky and it even overlapped in some places when one menu popped up over another. Personally I think Lazy tea was 100% the winner and I was genuinely shocked at the result (I don’t mean to be dis respectful). Don’t think the right choice was made, some people may not think about it that deeply but it is $3000 we are talking about.

The judging commentary in this video is either not edited properly, or they're just not explaining their reasoning properly. In the semifinals, they bashed almost all the games equally (except for LazyTea's) and gave no real reason why they chose the Mago game over the others. It's standard in any judging based show to ACTUALLY EXPLAIN why they chose a game to win. Here it almost seems random because they don't even explain their reasoning. Why not actually edit in the part where you explain why you picked the game to move on? I don't want to be rude, but this series in general is never edited well, especially the judging part. EDIT: What they did at the end of the video (where the judges explain their choices) should be done for every phase. In the beginning of the judging phase they made the same mistake where they just kept praising LazyTea's game and left in more negative feedback for NerdChomp's game, and it seemed like it was obvious LazyTea was going to win. But then when every judge says their own feelings, you get the actual REAL feedback that is more balanced. You need to do this every phase so the judging actually makes sense, otherwise it just feels like the editing is misleading.

You play as a character with a variety of bug skills, so I would've preferred to see the setting would be in a forest that has more variety of obstacles and climbable areas and your goal would be to make it back to home base before nighttime comes because that's when predators would arrive or instead of a blizzard there is a fire encroaching and you have to make it somewhere safe. Please give all the Devs who did get voted out one final showcase in the end. Even if the judges think the game isn't the best, we want to see all the cool games completely finished. That's why we are watching these videos over and over. For example, the devs who feel like their game still has good potential, can keep working on it and at the end you have 1 winner from the competition and 1 honerable mention.

@@johannesjoestar Firstly, chill. Secondly, the contest is for the cash prize. Some devs are already doing what I suggested and turn the idea into a fully fleshed game. All I'm saying is, that it would be cool to have a bit more of the reaction from the devs to the other games and a final discussion with everyone again. Just to show what all the games, that have been continued evolved into. It would not only serve as some last shoutout if they go for a release, but it also gives a bit more inside into the thoughts of the devs.

the cocooning concept is brilliant. that introduces a much mor interesting mechanic that "I found X and now I'm better!" adding strategy and variability all in one mechanic. I've been thinking of something similar for a twist on crafting, where you lose "X" but it comes back better later, and you have to make that decision to let something go and play differently because the long term payback is greater. it's like the psych/economics experiment of "do you want 1 cookie now, or wait and get 2 cookies?'..

Kelson's game was just the same concept as Lazy Martynas but weaker with the whole tentacle monster thing. Ethanos incorporated the metamorphosis theme into the gameplay in a more creative manner than Kelson. Kelson's game was just another shooter/ action game while Ethanos was a hitman style game with the unique concept of turning into other enemies with has a ton of possibilities and potential, far more than anything from Kelson's game. Honestly the judges really fumbled here. I don't want to be rude but the truth is while Kelson's game was good by itself it had nothing going for it compared to the rest of the games.

This one was a miss in my opinion. Nerd Chomp's game was just not engaging to me or something that I would consider fun to play. It was honestly like a walking simulator more than anything. No hate to him, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would enjoy that style of game, but I just don't see how it won over Tea's game. Tea's game was a much more polished and actual fleshed out game compared to Chomps. I think you guys majorly dropped the ball on the judging this time and kind of killed some games that had some real potential. Realistically compared to all the other games Chomp's should have been eliminated in round one, as there was practically no game play or environment.

You guys have seen many games made on this channel that went on to be released and receive some major updates and expansions. I think it would be really cool to see you make some side challenges about these games specifically. Each challenge would make for a great couple of videos depending on how many of these games you can make use of. Challenge 1: Each developer (team) is given a copy of the "final video build" of one of the games previously seen to full release so each one has a different incomplete version of the assigned game to work on as well as a randomized prompt from a wheel. Each developer team is tasked with reimagining the game they are given into a new game while leveraging what's there, all while taking the prompt into consideration for the direction of their project. Imagine visual and story overhauls, mechanical expansion, as well as recycling one mechanic's code with some adjustments to do something very different, etc. After completing their own timed project challenge, the unchanged versions of the games change hands to one of the other developer teams, meaning the next team also starts at the same point as the previous team. This goes on until each team has had a chance at reconstructing each of the games. After each of these rounds, the judges choose a winner, but they withhold who won each round, and total points wins the whole challenge at the end. As I described it, I realized this would be better filmed all back to back, but then released as a series with each round over a release schedule. Challenge 2: This one is similar, except each team is given a single incomplete version of a game that had been seen to completion and they each take it in their own directions. There is no swapping games in rounds since there's only one game in question, and it's mostly a challenge to see all the wild directions the same game can be taken. In this case the teams may also be given prompts to help shape the direction of their development, but also since it's less complicated than the first challenge there may be waves of prompts, like maybe up to 3 prompts. One is a keyword chosen at random on a wheel. One is a phrase given to all contestants to interpret into their designs. Finally one is a blind keyword given from each contestant to another contestant derived from a design the "giver" chose not to pursue with their version of the same game. Bonus Challenge 3: The contestants are handed the current release version of a game originally created in a previous challenge and are tasked with making a DLC expansion pack to that game. The original creator of the game is the judge on who wins. Since they are the judge, this could be a challenge that the Blackthornprod brothers could participate in as challengers themselves, which is always a dope quirk with the odd video when it happens. I know you guys don't need suggestions like these, but I find myself coming up with a new challenge variation every other video at least, maybe even 3 new per video. 😅
