I hate those PB turbo lights. The problem is that they're bright AF to the cyclists that are following you, but if you go a little off the axis of the lens they're no brighter than a typical 5 led blinky. for being seen, you want lights with a wider viewing angle, not an insanely high brightness.

I only now got around to get some of those items. Probably I was pretty cautious biker then. However I still need to get info on all the tubes and how it's done on the go. I did helmet, hand pump, some tools, lights and now need chain too as well as those tubes. My bike had reflectors and bell already and I installed bottle holder and kick stand. I should be fine for another year but I'm always scared to bust the tyre and I'm still learning how to be a proper cyclist

Tire liners for thorn protection. Especially if you live in the Southwest US. Goat heads, bull heads, or wtvr you call them, WILL find you, and they will end your ride. They're about $15 and most bike shops will install them free of charge, if you buy them there.

I have flashing lights front and rear even during the day. Someone can still hit me from behind, but from front on or side on, I’ve been able to anticipate trouble and avoid it....so far....

I've got one that I ride on the track. I have very long legs, so the downward sloping top tube is nice so I don't need so much seat tube sticking out. It's reasonably light, seems good and stiff, and it's pretty. It is pretty big bucks, though. You'll want to treat it nice and not abuse it. Keep in mind that they're generally listed by seat tube length, so the sizes are way smaller than they sound. I ride a 64, but the effective top tube is around 59.5 IIRC.

I like Urban lights, but I am not sure 350 lumens is enough. I have an Urban 500 and an 800. They’re great. The 800 has the advantage of being as bright as a 350 while the 800 is set to mid-power, and it should last for 3 hours that way. Bonus. With lights, brighter is better.

Can u go tubeless with thin tires, idk much about commuter bikes i ride mountain bikes
@nwimpney7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I've heard that you really need to get ones made for tubeless use, unlike on mountain bikes, where you can get away with almost anything. My experience with earlier ones a few years back was not good. "Hutchinson fusion 3 tubeless" I like the tube version of the tire, but the tubeless is thick and heavy and the bead is insanely tight. I've just recently decided to give it another try with some Schwalbe s-one TLE tires. They were much easier to install (still tight, but not ridiculous), and so far seem to ride well. I expect that with the larger tires, and seemingly better sealant they will actually work alright.

@ibraheembaloch97727 жыл бұрын
why dont you recommend tubeless tyres
@nwimpney7 жыл бұрын
The early road tubeless tires were a massive PITA. They were expensive, didn't work well, and were so thick and heavy that they rolled worse than a tubed tire anyway. They were also practically impossible to change if you did get a flat that the sealant wouldn't handle. I just recently put some newer schwalbe TLE tires on my bikes, and that was a much better experience. Can't speak yet to the flat-proofness, but they feel like they roll well, and they seemed like I could swap in a tube in an emergency if the sealant doesn't handle it.

If you are wearing a backpack, add reflective material to your backpack. When riding in winter and its dark, wear bright coloured gloves so traffic is able to pick up your hand signals. Buy warm gloves and socks for winter, its worth it, also a bacalava to protect your lung from cold air. Invest in good bright lights, perhaps use redundant backlights, you won´t notice if the battery of your backlight fails. Put your head on a swivel, be aware of the traffic around you, not everybody follows the rules. Stay hydrated. Winter pro tip: overdress your body core, therefore your body tries to get rid of the heat via your extremeties which means your extremeties keep warm. Know your roads, know your potholes. In traffic, be visible, be predictable, be nice and follow the rules of streed code. Stay in the road next to parking cars, getting doored is partially your fault and not fun. Keep an extra lightweight bag in your packpack in case you overpack. You can clip it to your backpack with a carabiner. For rain, keep 2 garbage bags in your backpack as an extra protective layer. Always carry tools, spare tube and money with you.. A rain radar app on your smartphone can show you when it is smart to ride home without getting caught in the rain. Get a map with all the bikelanes from your city. Always be aware of pedestrians, they don´t hear you. When kids are nearby, be always prepared to brake hard. Kids always have the right of way. Never ride bike lanes in the wrong direction, this so dangerous that it is statistically the No.1 cause for bike accidents. When overtaking other bikes, announce it either by bell or by voice. When changing clothes, you can get rid of sweat with babywipes. When you don´t want to sweat, ride slower than 12 Mph/19km/h in the flat. That is the speed, the dutch ride in everyday clothes. No sweat, still 4 times faster than by foot.

I would not buy a helmet because I don't think bicycling is very dangerous. I do most of my biking in suburban Vista, CA. I just take off from home and ride for 45 to 75 minutes in what ever direction I feel like at the moment. I ride for exercise or in town errands about 3-5 times a week. The only problem that I have had was being right hooked once by a car in the last 10 years that I have been riding consistantly. I also ride a motorcycle, if that makes any difference. The rest of your suggestions are good.

i can understand most of the stuff.. but the helmet? having skateboarded and riding bikes since i was a kid, i have never ever hit my head. and this goes for most people who do something regularly. the key to crashing is knowing how to crash. ask any skateboarder and they will tell you they know how to fall in order to minimize the damage. but yeah, i guess for casuals, it may be useful.. for those who know what they are doing though, it is more of a problem than a solution.
@nwimpney7 жыл бұрын
You never need a helmet, until the day that you do. I've only had one crash in my life where I took a pretty good hit to my helmet. I won't claim that it "saved my life", because it's impossible to say, but if nothing else it saved me from what would have been a horrible case of road-rash.
