I commute to work using a bicycle. I considered myself a cyclist because I started thinking about how roads, transit, and cities are designed from the perspective of someone who relies on a bicycle to get from point A to point B. I have learned from this video that I am not a cyclist, I’m a commuter. I follow traffic laws and stop at red lights because I don’t want to die and believe that the rules do, in fact, apply to me as well. I have a bike lock because I only ride my bike for about 30 min a day. I chose my helmet based on durability rather than aerodynamics. I only shelled out enough money for a decent bicycle and not a performance-optimized one. I wear normal clothing while riding my bike because I don’t want to look like a chump in public and at work. Yeah, I’m a commuter, not a cyclist.

Some of us commuters will go for middle ground between practicality and performance. Lycra might not be everyone's cup of tea but form-fitting "normal" clothes with cycling shorts underneath work almost as well. I'm a "commuter," but since I live in car dependent suburbia where everything is built out and paved over with massive stroads I probably sometimes act like a "cyclist." I often try to go fast as I can (especially when cars are behind me waiting to pass because I have to share the two lane road and cars are coming from the opposite direction). Unless the wind is slowing me way down, it feels great when I'm cruising, but like I said I'm a commuter and I sometimes use it instead of a car because I don't want to pay $3-4 a gallon just to please all those carbrains who think I'm the entitled one for existing lol

@@josharden6793 *TL;DR Two wrongs don't make a right, try to give cyclists a better public image, and yes US road infrastructure is bad (also my comment starts off aggressive, dw I'm not biased for or against cyclists / drivers)* We just wish cyclists weren't turning into the very thing they swore to destroy in the first place; entitled brats who think they own the road / dictate exactly how it should be designed / think that anyone in the opposing vehicle has no personality other than being the user of that vehicle. Car driver: "These damn cyclists, why don't they stay in the cycle lanes! Then they wouldn't get in our way! Don't they ever try to be considerate?" *overtakes dangerously around a blind corner* Bicycle rider 1(me): "Damn, aren't car drivers so horrible sometimes? Maybe we should try to show respect while out on the roads, to hopefully end any rivalry between road users" Bicycle rider 2:"Yeah, exactly! So anyway what was I saying, oh - yeah, this carbrained npc almost hit me when I was running a stop sign the other day, I would've beaten my strava time if I didn't have to hit the brakes, so inconsiderate!" *runs a red light* A few things before you send me the usual hate mail; I agree america is predominantly too car focused, that's primarily due to zoning laws, I personally think converting to a country like the Netherlands is slightly overkill, I believe a happy medium, especially given that america is so car focused that this would still be a big change for most people; changing to UK infrastructure In the UK there are a lot of cycle lanes, mostly reasonable cycle laws, the main things I think america is doing wrong when converting to be more cycle friendly is that in typical american fashion they overdo it; They completely redesign one intersection to be the most cycle friendly thing the world has ever seen, then run out of money and leave the rest as is, as opposed to putting a simple raised cycle lane, maybe separated from the footpath by some plastic bollards, throughout the entire area, with either button or electromagnetic induction loop activated crossing lights, with maybe a small rumble strip 30 feet in either direction from the lights, instead of nothing on 99% to tell drivers about the crossing, then on the one they've completely overdone like 6 huge speed bumps that destroy anything other than a 4000lb SUV with a hood so high you can't even see what's in front of you (I don't have evidence but I'm fairly sure people that live near speed bumps prefer SUVs as they make speeding over them more comfortable). Every time I try to speak sense to either someone who you might call "car brained" or "cycle brained" it always ends in them hurling insults, and me just leaving the conversation, so please try to be objective. I find the best thing to do is to remember that when you're out and about, or conversing online, you represent your entire community, people that didn't know you existed will have what you do or write as their first impression, so always try to do your best. Also if you're going to do stupid stuff (pushing the limits of speed on a bicycle or a car) take it to a track, even if you're the only one killed (which on a bike is more likely) you will ruin the life of the person you hit, whereas a track is safer, and you're also surrounded by a community of like minded people which is a bonus. I used to race competitively on my bike, used to be alright, until I was hit intentionally by another cyclist, and I decided to pack it in, but I accepted that it was part of the risks. Fast forward 6 years later and I'm cycling on a relaxed family trail with my extended family, and some idiot on a bicycle just cuts through everyone and tries to overtake me on the wrong side (it was also the side I was on), hits me at maybe 30kmh, I twist my knee in the frame, land on my elbow, get a piece of gravel lodged into my arm *(I still have the scar)* then he blames me somehow, I was only 15, so I was in shock, so my dad comes over and yells at the guy, he cycles off before even checking if I was okay, making it a hit and run. So *please* don't cycle dangerously / push your limits near other people, *you put the whole community to shame* Also while in control of a vehicle(including riding a bike) I've been in 3 collisions, all 3 were caused by a cyclist 1- hit off my bike when I was 9 (but on a track so I would've let that slide if it wasn't intentional), 2- rear ended at speed when I was 15 in a hit and run (on my bike), 3 - parked in my car at 17 years old, cyclist stumbles while lane filtering and clips my mirror and cycles off before anyone could check for damage (it was easily compound + polished out). If you count collisions where I was the passenger; 1- rear ended by a mother checking her baby and not looking at the road. 2- Locking up on pine needles and hitting a tow bar of a stopped car just hard enough to crack our plastic grille. All I'm saying is that if I was most other people I'd absolutely hate cyclists, as all of my collisions have been with a cyclist (who was at fault). 99% of people, if they were in my situation, would despise cyclists, and would campaign against anything that helps cyclists (even if it helps them too), like cycle lanes etc, luckily enough I cycled a lot during childhood especially, so I don't think of the whole community the same as I do the people who hurt me.
@josharden67935 ай бұрын
@@Kaiser-ks3yq I appreciate your balanced and (mostly) unbiased take. I would like to point out the fact that when a cyclist does something wrong it makes the whole community look bad, whereas a driver does something wrong (much more dangerous due to the multiple ton vehicle than can much more easily kill or maim someone) and it's seen as inevitable, or at least not something due to any kind of bad policy. Basically, there's a double standard against bikers. You may already be aware of this but I just wanted to point it out. Likewise, I don't think of all drivers the same way, just the car brained ones who think public transit is for suckers and biking is "weak" or "unamerican" or something. Also I'm sure we both know (especially since it's the whole point of the video) there's a difference between cyclists (athletes) and commuters by bike. The double standard I mentioned blurs the lines though, like comparing regular car commuters to racecar drivers as if they are the same people.

I became a Roadie - cyclist - when the ride became more enjoyable that just using a bike to go to the store, to go to work. When I became a cyclist, certain rides became more thrilling - hill riding - descending a hill at 50 mph. So I started training. As a cyclist - Roadie - I started to favor certain types of bikes and components - Steel frames for their ride quality and the 10-speed drivetrains of the 2000’s because of the 10-speed cog sets and the polished aluminum components for their beauty. Think of this as having a practical 4-door BMW to go to work and buy groceries … and an air cooled 911 or a Rotary powered Mazda RX7 or a Honda 2000 for the joy of driving on your days off. I have a hybrid bike that I use for errands. This is the one that gets locked up to a parking meter. It sits at home while I go for joy rides on my road bike. On thing this video gets wrong is that it is not the “cyclist” that are the daredevils that run through red lights - we are most likely riding a road bike that we have spent $3000 plus on - so we are not going to challenge a driver who is wrapped up in metal. It is the younger generation on their fixed gear bikes that run red lights, cut car and bus drivers off, ride in groups of 20-50 riders blocking whole street during rush hour traffic, ride the wrong way in designated bike lanes, cut corners when they make left turns so that they are heading right at a cyclist who is on the legal right side of the road, and ride wheelies through car lanes as drivers are waiting for their green light.

honestly if you ride with both hands or even one then you're old. Yeah, I go 35km/h downhill next to a road with cars going 60 kmh towards me while im not wearing a helmet but honestly, who doesn't want to live? I still remember the day I went downhill 78 km. No helmet, three times the speed a bike helmet is designed to handle, looking at my phone, the snapchat filter that measures speed and riding with either one or no hands. Thats life. Thats freedom., Thats youth. I didn't die, I had fun, I lived life. Maybe one day a car will hit me as I carry my 3 bags of groceries or check my phone while I run a red light but honestly until that happens I will have lived a life of freedom and adventure. Every day I try to take one corner on my commute faster than before. Ive gotten it down to 29.5km/h and Im starting to hit the point where my pedal is almost starting to touch the ground due to the lean I have to have to not fall over. Every time I try to get a little faster I wonder: is this actually possible or will this be too fast? Will I slip and either have to roll off or do the catch of my life and ride on? Honestly I don't care, I just know im gonna get to 30km/h. Disregarding safety is not just dumb, its a way of life and youth like excessive alcohol consumption, not strating to learn for finals until the day before our arguing with the bouncer. Im not 19 to behave like im 40, im 19 to behave like im retarded. Live life.

Somewhere between commuter and Dutch - stonking great backpack, cargo basket on the back and towing a bike trailer, but at least wear the legislated helmet, a load of lights (and still have halfwits claim they didn't see the blinding lights after they nearly run me over in the bike lane). 2 weeks of groceries instead of 1 though.
