@@morley364 I give them the benefit of the doubt, since we are talking about teenagers, who clearly haven't being in a relationship before. Their fights seemed kinda childish. Although, because they're so young it's would've being better if they just went their separate ways instead of reconciliating, clearly they needed to develop as people instead of being hung up on each other.

@@melvv18 That's true. I want more teen romances to show people going "hey this relationship is actually not the end-all be-all of my life, let's just try to grow as people!" because I think everyone, but especially young people, really put too much weight on relationships in a way that can be really emotionally damaging and encourage them to stay in relationships that aren't healthy or beneficial.

I am a 6 2 woman who was bullied for being tall, but I agree these movies blow it way out of proportion… Like it was always kids in school who said mean things, and they also said mean things about things besides my height. That’s what real bullying is-they find what you’re insecure about and pick at it. It would have been so much better if they would have focused more on Jodi’s self worth from the beginning and made it clear that her delusions were very much just insecurities in her own head. The fact that they tried to spin it as if she was actually oppressed is laughable. If this movie was out when I was a kid, it definitely would have made me feel like crap lol
@TriggerBud

This is exactly what I was thinking lol. The entire movie I just kept waiting for them to show us how “smart” they were by having Jodi realize that it was all in her head. I kept waiting until the scene where she pops out in that little boy blue suit and lost it. I laughed until my sides hurt. I was shocked it was the actual storyline, I thought there was no way 🤣🤣

I'm only 5'2" so I have no idea what being bullied for being tall is like. However, the one that plays Jody is Ava from Dance Moms and she actually was harshly bullied for her height and thinness. Mostly by Abby Miller and social media. Abby talked about her body proportions and said she looked like a praying mantis when dancing. Social media called her gangly and anorexic looking. The bullying started when she was only 12 and continued through the years. Ava was highly affected by the bullying but now she's a beautiful model and budding actress. I'm saying this to say that everyone handles things differently. What may not be that huge a deal to one person can decimate another person's self-esteem and self-worth. We shouldn't downplay someone else's suffering because we can't relate or they seem privileged. Privilege doesn't stop internal pain.

@@leahunfeigned5955 that’s all true! but this movie is unfortunately not about ava’s personal experience and is set in a high school where being tall wouldn’t be as much of a big deal

@leahunfeigned5955 2 жыл бұрын
@@amberdotpng9670 Except many have said they have been bullied in school for being tall lol. Ava was in middle and highschool when that happened, hence why the role means something to her. Again, we can't downplay others'feelings because we can't relate or we're not as bothered. I've seen children brutally teased and beat up for being too tall, too short, too skinny, too fat, having too much acne, being too dark or too pale by people's idiotic opinions. Who are we to say what isn't a big deal to a victim? My point is judgement is easy but so is empathy.

Honestly the concept of being oppressed for tallness seems a lot more distasteful when you take into account people with dwarfism. Like, I have a sibling with dwarfism and they deal with shit constantly. They legit, as an adult, open the door to their house and get folks like "can i talk to your parents". This is like the tip of the icebergs of their problems. Like this movie needs to shut up about being literally a super average height. What the hell

LITERALLY THO!! People with dwarfism are disrespected CONSTANTLY! Yet I'm supposed to believe a girl that's 6'1 is supposedly going through it with everyone??? She's not even like uncommonly tall; Even for a girl, no one is gonna be mocking you constantly for being 6'1 (at most random comments from new people, but people who see you everyday at school will quickly lose interest bcs you're not the tallest person they've ever seen lol)😭😭 If she was at least 7'0 I could see more people making her out to be a spectacle (I also feel like less people are likely to try and bully someone bigger than them tbhlol

@@NothingGoodHere1001 Seriously, spot on. No one fricken mocks a girl for being 6ft. In fact, everyone’s jealous. I worked with my boyfriends sister for about 8 months in a clothing store and she is also 6ft 1in. To be completely honest, she gets near constant comments about it, but all of those comments are in admiration or straight jealously. She is BEAUTIFUL and stands out even more so because she is so perfectly tall. That’s part of what cracks me up/pisses me off so much about this movie. Everyone WANTS to be that girl. I see the point you’re making here and I’m not saying that tall girl handled things well but you’re logic is kinda weird ‘people who have dwarfism exist and have more struggles so tall people can’t have struggles;’ - those two are completely unrelated. I think a more relevant point would be (like the person above mentioned) that people with gigantism exist and have more genuine suffering than a girl who is tall and has no other issues to come with it.

I'm a fairly short trans guy and one of my best friends is a trans girl who stands at a solid 6 feet 4 inches and has done since about freshman year. I remember when the first movie came out and she messaged me a like twelve paragraph rant on how the movie could have been actually good if the main character was a trans girl. I had no idea they had even made a sequel until I woke up to a long string of messages the other day about how she would have rewritten the story which has been the entertainment of my week so far.

As a mixed person it always bothers me that the mixed/racially ambiguous male lead is always the second choice to the white male lead even when the lead female has more chemistry with the racially ambiguous lead (even when the person is one race they always pick the lighter skinned guys so you aren't always sure about their race). It just reminds me how a lot of people's way of "accepting" mixed people is just fetishizing us or using us for social justice points but we aren't really looked at as a serious option in the long term when it comes to relationships. This has come up a lot in dating for me and it really sucks so even tho it's sorta realistic I'd just like to change this format that's to prevalent in romance stories because it's super disheartening to see mixed people always being put as second best when compared to a full white person.

Tall Girl definitely doesn't need a sequel. At all. I just don't get why Jodi Kreyman would ever get bullied for her height. I mean, sure, she's taller than average, but that doesn't give any right to other people in her school to essentially downgrade her constantly. Jodi probably needs a wake-up call. She's absolutely beautiful the way she is, and I just don't get why other people around her don't see that (well, except for Dunkleman, Stig, Mr Handsome Squirdward guy, etc). That Backstreet Boys song is literally stuck to me like glue these past few days, and now I'm still concerned about that. Lmao.

Totally fair. I personally do remember a lot of girls getting bullied for being “different” in general- race, gender expression, body size, physical ability, religion, etc. in specific activities. It happened a lot in dance, competitive cheer, and theater when I was a kid into when I was a teen, and even into adulthood I still see ridiculous type-casting happening in the theater world. It’s getting better, but still. So yeah, it can happen, and my theory is maybe the films came out of Jodie’s experiences in competitive dance (I think I remember she was on Dance Moms or something idk), but yeah, I still mostly agree the first film isn’t well done or even necessary. But this sequel is definitely better!! So huzzah for growth!?

From my experience, the "ex being off limits" thing is more about "when did those feelings start". If we just broke up like a month ago and you saying "hey, your ex is fine, I wanna date him" it's... weird. It's typically when the relationship ending happened less than a year ago. It's not about the exes' feelings toward each other, it's about "were you secretly pinning over my ex when we were actually together?" "Are you a bad friend?" If y'all haven't dated for five years, will not date again, the break up was mutual or understandable, and there was no abuse involved, I don't think anyone I know would have an issue with that

I got super bullied at school for my height 6'1" uniforms didn't really fit for long and we couldn't afford more, also super pale. I was bullied heavily, also I grew up in Texas and southern México and was the tallest in the school for a long time. I kept getting tripped and they yelled timber, pretended there was an Earthquake when I walked, it's not very common to be so tall there and honestly in the movie she doesn't really get bullied. Now as an adult my height is just an inconvenience at most time but I no longer hate it as much. It all was okay after going to a concert. And the stranger comments are super common, specially from creepy old men or younger guys who are shorter than me being like "no you're Definitely at least 6'4, cause I'm 6'2" annoying as hek.. I hate this movie so much because there can be real struggle and real bullying that happens. But, I hate how close it is to my life in a lot of ways, my sister is shorter and gorgeous and won beauty contests at school, heck my best friend's name is Fre'etta, so fucking close. Honestly, I think the writer heard about me and made this 😂 but did a terrible job.

In my personal experience as a taller female if you're to get any sort of negative response from anyone after elementary, it's from the adults. When I was in high school I was just shy of 6ft and I kid you not. If I had to wear something nice for a presentation in class and I chose to wore heels, I knew not to go by certain teacher's classrooms because they always had something to say. And usually along the lines of "you're tall enough. So why are you wearing those." So not bullying, but unnecessary comments. Or in my life outside of school there has been times where I've been stopped by people I don't know and 9/10 the aspects of sports or modeling would come up. I do neither. And once I say so, I've experienced a quite a few that's caught a bit of an attitude. "Oh if I had that height I would..." "You're wasting potential..." Etc. So long story short (I really didn't mean to make it this long) it's not so much bullying, but people feeling the need to shove their notion of stereotype onto people that fit the bill.

as a tall girl the only interest i would have in a movie/tv show that focuses on a character being tall would be the insecurity/disconnect from femininity. i feel like this movie tried to do that just not very well. and when i say this i mean maybe a plus sized tall woman character. im an admittedly tall thin girl however i’ve lost weight, and that’s why. in addition to this i’m bigger boned so i’ve slightly felt the need to make myself shrink in other ways (like weight) to fit in, if that makes sense. however i think a movie or tv show that focuses on the struggle of a true plus sized tall girl struggling with that issue (compensating for tallness in other ways) would be a much more interesting and realistic telling. i think the concept in general would be better suited for a character in a show rather than the plot for a movie or movie series though. edit: i believe this series made it seem like tallness is very ostracized by society which it’s just not. or at least not in that obvious of a way. the weirdest comments i’ve ever gotten were in middle school about “oh you’ll have nba babies” (which is eh to begin with but not a huge deal). idk point being the *few* struggles of being a tall woman are much more subdue than they portray it. however these issues are more magnified when you add things like being plus-sized, etc onto it.

Tall girl is based on a manga called "lovely complex" The manga is a really good read for teen audiences. It is actually making 100% sense for a Japanese school girl to be having these issues, when they are 6ft+. As in Japan the avg. height size is much smaller. As 6ft you wold tower over majority of the population. The manga details the social anxiety in a teen girls mind and flashes out that her fear is based on superficialty and dives into accepting oneself even if society looks at you as a unicorn. Even the Swedish exchange student makes so much sense in the manga as again, Japan is notoriously not having too many "outsiders" due to cultural differences and very heavy xenophobic mindset. All of this, however, makes zero fucking sense in an American freaking setup... the movie writers should have realized this...

Is it really based on LoveCom or is it just a coincidence? I noticed the parallels too, except as you said the conflict in LoveCom made a lot more sense given the social context, and was far more nuanced. I think if the writers had indeed been inspired by Lovely Complex, it would have been nice if they'd taken more cues about the 'real' conflict of the manga, which is not so much about the horrendous struggles of being tall, but navigating the attraction and then relationship between a taller-than-average girl and a shorter-than-average boy. Even the fact that the tall Koizumi falls for the short Otani first is kinda subversive.

We weren't very inventive when it came to names back in the days... like we still use viking names like "Bear" and "Stone"(Doesn't sound as silly in swedish). It's not just you. I've had that happen to me twice. Both my ex and friend and I are all in the same friend group so it was weird when I found out. Had to physically a d mentally distance myself for a long time

it really depends on your relationship..like I seen exes who are still great friends with previous partner and they don't mind if one of the friends went out with them. More on those who..? have no bad break ups , grew apart or rather be friends than in a relationship. I do find it weird of they are toxic or not a good person in general .

As a swedish person I can tell you that not only do all the swedish names mentioned in the movie make the characters sound like they're 60+ years old. The accent they have whilst speaking swedish is completely incomprehensible for a swedish person.

THANK YOU! i don't think fareeda had a name before, they literally made a stereotype, so i was glad they gave her a story. but yeah they did listen to the criticism and improve on a lot of aspects, it was much better. did we need it? not really but at least this time it's a watchable movie as opposed to the mess that the first one was

21:55 If any of my friends reacted this way to me saying I had feelings for someone they might've dated in the past, I'm backing tf up. There's something there and I don't want it. Like, the air is not completely clear and me adding my feelings into the mix is just going to make everything worse. And this goes beyond them still having feelings for their ex, btw. I would hope that bestie trusted me enough to confide in me if that person ever hurt them, but even if it's just petty shit, that's still bad blood. And as someone who is witch adjacent (girl, weird shit happens to me all the time), I don't fuck around with bad vibes.

My partner is 5'8". I am 5'11". He DOES NOT CARE! I was a little worried at the start of our dating, but HE DOES NOT CARE. His height/my height does not effect who he is as a person. He has a ton of other good qualities. His self-confidence is just one lol

I have a twin sister who's Damn near my height,she's 6'3 im 6'4 She was popular because of things like her height,her looks,her body,her personality she was messy thought👀 But still this never happened to her and she like hates this movie series because its stupid. And she wasn't even the tallest girl at our school because we had a volleyball player and basketball player taller than her.

THANK YOU omg the girl code is so outdated. I agreed with every single point you’ve said. Some girl will LOOK at another guy first and girls will be like girl code… being frivolous aside, I feel like just because it didn’t work out with someone else, doesn’t mean it won’t work out for you, because we’re all different. We have different personalities, interests, and experiences. I get if it weirds you out because your friend dated them for a week and it just taints your perception haha but if y’all really click and it’s cool? Thennnnn it might work out 🤷‍♀️

I honestly received a lot of shit for being taller than literally everyone in my grade growing up. So I kinda get her issue, I got a lot of bullying for my height I was 5’7 when I was 11 years old. But I also got bullied for all other kinds of things, so yes she did blow it out of proportion💀😂

I was the tallest person in all of my classes (I am 6ft). I was bullied in elementary and middle school for it, but not so much in high school (I heard snarky comments here and there, but I ignored them). Now, I always have people tell me how jealous they are of my height. It truly is a blessing to be tall. Also, the movie theater line was so dumb lol. If anything, people get annoyed when I stand in front of them at a concert 😆.

I've been bullied for my height in school, in between 6 to 13 y.o. I literally hated being tall. My mom and generally growing up helped with the issue. Made me aggressive towards my bullies so they fucked off

one of my best friends in high school was 6'4" when I met her. she was without question one of the tallest people in the school. as far as I can remember, she didn't draw any attention merely for being tall. more people commented on my height than hers. I'm 5'2". she never said anything about my height that I can remember. ironically, the only people calling me short were people between 5'3" and 5'6" or so 😑

At 5’10” I am the shortest person in my family and I’ve never ever in my life been bullied for being tall, by anyone. Ever. The end. Should also add that I constantly wear high heels because I like them. I think if anyone has an issue with my height, that’s their issue not mine.
