Especially in that era when player safety wasn't even really a thought yet. The guys career began in 1948 when they were still wearing leather helmets and he played through the 1974 season. That is insane. That guy took a hell of a beating but man was he tough. You had to be to last 26 years in pro football back in those days. Thats two or three careers in one LoL

@Brandon Mitchell, he played seven years as a starter with the Oilers in the '60's, and a year and a half with the Bears as a starter in the '50's. He did primarily kick. But, in 1970, he came off of the bench and won five games playing qb and kicking. GORDIE HOWE scored 15 goals in the NHL as a 51, and later that season, a 52 year old. He played in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 1980 in the NHL..

I didn't see the 1970 season, I was only 10 years old, but I did watch all of those games in 1972 when he came off the bench to save the Raiders from defeat. It was ironic because the Raiders had paid a small fortune to sign the wonder boy Darryl Lamonica, and then Lamonica sat on the bench while a man old enough to be his dad saved the game. It was the first year I followed NFL football, and to my 12-year old eyes, Blanda was hella impressive.

I think it's really too bad he gets forgotten about nowadays. This guy played multiple positions, and still holds several records to this day as far as I know. To play multiple positions in the NFL today is unheard of. He still holds the record for being the oldest player in the NFL. He's underrated big time. George Blanda is most well known for his time with the raiders.

@Brandon Mitchell, dude played in a time when pass defense rules were different. Dude threw 36 td passes in a season, not broken for 24 years. Most qbs then threw more picks than TD passes. He won 2 AFL TITLES AS A STARTER, ONE AS A KICKER. In 1970 as a 43 year old, he was the AFC player of the year, and the first kicker to eclipse 2 grand points. Yeah, he was real garbage.. If not for his qb play and kicking in 1970, the Raiduhhhs win 3 games. Next..

@@robertsprouse9282 he did throw more picks than tds lmao
@robertsprouse9282
@robertsprouse9282 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbaws4469, more picks than TDs= not unusual then..its why teams ran the ball so much, and once zones came in as the coin of the realm, majority pass defense strategy, and the hashmarks moved closer to the middle of the field, running really took off until pass defense rules were changed in '78 four years after he retired.. Would Blanda have been a Hall of Fame qb if he got that really legitimate shot that he wanted in the 1950's 12 or 13(for two years) team NFL? Probably not..but he never got to play enough in the '50's NFL to learn the pro passing game, when he did play qb and not just kicker/punter, he stunk. It took getting all of those AFL in-game reps and that in- games' situations' experience and playcalling, even if the AFL was inferior to the NFL up to 1968, to make him a pro-quality starting qb or at least, an impact-making field gen.. And, 1970 in the first regular season schedule merger season= proved it!!. No, he was put in the HALL because of the kicking pto record-then- points, the clutch qb play/field goal kicking winning games run that he was on in the early 1970's as a 40+ year old; incredible, at the time, and that longevity in pro ball(one of the teams he played for started in another 1940's pro league, and folded after two seasons in the NFL and was Balty's first non-semipro football team), and he was put in because of the part he played in the history of the game's development.. TWENTY FIVE SEASONS IN THE U.S.in pro ball, all in the U.S.= UNHEARD OF! THAT, CHARLIE BROWN IS WHAT CHRISTM..ERRR GEORGE BLANDA IS/WAS ALL ABOUT.. Side note: Oh, with few exceptions, most pro qbs today cannot consistently throw a receiver open.. The guy either has to be wide open or he generally, reaches behind or waits for the ball instead of catching the ball full speed at arms' length in FRONT of them.. Watch UNITAS, and see ball placement with Ray Berry and TE John Mackey, and WRs/flankers/rbs Lennie Moore, and WR Willie Richardson.. QBs today have wideopen receivers, and do not have to hit the target bullseye consistently, especially= leading the receiver, of which there are 3-5 wideouts, out of a shotgun with blockers that can extend their arms while blocking, where one or two receivers are wideopen on practically every play getting passes from a qb with a lot more time to pass without fear of being broken in half. It was a totally different game..make no mistake.. with a lot fewer plays..and different= NON-ARENABALL STATS.. YEP..

I loved watching Blanda do what he did in the 1970 season. But think about this. We drafted Stabler in 1968. Al Davis sat stabler for FIVE years before allowing him to play. The reason Blanda had to come in all those games was because Lamonica was sucking the place up. I believe if Stabler had been injected into those games, the Raiders probably win a super bowl in 1970 and one or two more before 1976's super bowl victory. Blanda was great but he was no Kenny Stabler.
@jeremythompson9122
@jeremythompson9122 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. They probablycould've won in Baltimore in the 70 AFC Championship If they played Kenny Stabler earlier. Blanda was great in 1970 but he was already 43 or 44 years old by then. Who knows if they played Stabler as a rookie they might've even beat the Jets in the 68 AFL Championship. The Snake was Namaths backup at Alabama for a year or two I think
@jonburrows8602
@jonburrows8602 Жыл бұрын
That is simply not True. While the Raiders drafted Stabler in 1968, he didn't join the team until 1970. He therefore just wasn't ready to do much of anything as a rookie in 1970. One could argue that he should have been the Raiders starter after the disappointing 1971 season, but that is it.

@@jonburrows8602What a dufus you are. First of all "That is simply not true." What a stupid expression in this context. Learn English. Second of all, he did join the Raiders in 1968, only to quit in 1969. Try learning something before posting. From Wikipedia: "Stabler signed a two-year contract with the Raiders in March 1968.[8] In November, the Raiders sent Stabler to Spokane, Washington, to play for the Spokane Shockers of the Continental Football League.[9][10][11] He played in two games for the Shockers before being recalled by the Raiders in late November.[12][13][14] In July 1969, Stabler left the Raiders.[15] However, in November 1969, Stabler said "I'll be back in pro football come June."[16][17] In January 1970, it was reported that Stabler and Raiders head coach John Madden agreed that Stabler would return to the Raiders for training camp in July.[18] " If Al Davis hadn't been an idiot, Stabler would have started from 1968. Lamonica was horrible.
