I would also recommend to anyone looking to get into the sport to invest a little bit more, around $800, and get a bike/frame that is worth upgrading over time - tapered headtube (upgrade to an air fork) and tubeless ready rims (fewer flats and no inner tubes to deal with) are a big plus as you progress in the sport. As mentioned the hard part is finding bikes right now at any price point.

@@downtoridemtb Agreed. That’s why when it was $500 it did make sense but at $600 na. A friend of mine has the $400 one and he had to change BB with the crankset because it’s garbage. He had to change the rear derailleur because it was garbage. The cassette broke a tooth in the highest gear. The fork weights more than a hammer. The tires doesn’t last long. He has only 650 miles on it and rear one is about to die. This bike is good for people that like to work on their stuff and modify it but compare to the other ones shown here specially against the Talon and Rockhopper for me it doesn’t make sense unless you are getting a new tapered fork and in that case people should start looking at $750 getting more value for their money. Unfortunately the current bike stock situation is horrible right now. If you can get your hands on one of these or my popular recommendation: Vitus Nucleus 29 VR, then you might have a good trail bike. But it depends on what you actually seeking for. None of these listed Bikes have geometry well suited for being used on gnarly trails. I am not saying they are bad, but they usually fit more into XC Riding and some of them have weird Wheel Setups like the Schwinn 29 inch Axum Mountain Bike. The Axum is hella nice for what youre paying but just for clarification: if you switch out the fork you will need a new wheelset for the front, because it doesnt match with standard 29 inch mtb wheelsizes in the width. But besides that on some of these bikes you can´t really go wrong for having so much bike for the value.

I think it’s the best one in this price range. Pedals would probably be your smartest upgrade. Raceface Chesters are the go-to budget/quality pedals although there are cheaper option on Amazon and EBay that are very similar. Everything functions properly kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZbin. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

Call me crazy, but the Giant Talon 4 at $500 still has that narrow-range 14-28 freewheel you see on $70 big box bikes... WHY?? That's just egregious cost-cutting at that price. They didn't pull that crap on the 2020 model, and they don't appear to do that in at least 8 other countries, FWICT.
@downtoridemtb4 жыл бұрын
They changed a lot for 2021. The Talon 2 is now just over $600 and is much better spec’d than the Talon 4.
@ShootMyMonkey4 жыл бұрын
It makes sense to cut corners somewhere to meet a price target, and I fully expect it, for instance, with the fork, but there are some concessions that just shouldn't be made. Personally, I consider it criminal for any new mtn bike over $350 not to have a cassette (e-bikes notwithstanding). The bare minimum they could do would be a megarange freewheel instead of that narrow 14-28. They don't even cost more. That, too, the Talon 3 as an in-between option for 2021 exists in other countries, but not in the U.S. I mean, prices throughout the market climbed quite a bit this year because of supply shortages, but also because of the tariffs. To me, the level of cost-cutting exclusive to the U.S. only makes sense if you assume that Giant - being a Chinese manufacturer - is subject to the Trump tariffs to a greater degree than many others.
@downtoridemtb4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree with you on that freewheel. Especially since it is buried in the information. It says it has a cassette which isn’t true if it’s a freewheel. Only after you look up the cassette model number do you find out. Poor job by Giant there.

why chain dropping on GT? is it because of ACERA? What is the minimum to not drop the chain that often? Also does tourney drop chain even more often then acera? Or what is the benefit of acera vs tourney?
@downtoridemtb3 жыл бұрын
Acera is slightly better than tourney but to eliminate chain drop you either need a good chain guide or a 1x drivetrain with a derailleur that has a clutch.

Not bad given the price. Definitely comparable to other bikes on this list. Not something I’d get with plans to upgrade upgrade though. You can get so much more out of the box for what it would cost to upgrade, for example, the fork and drivetrain.

@downtoridemtb4 жыл бұрын
Total oversight on my part. Hydraulic brakes and a 120mm fork make it a great value. MSRP is over $600 but the current sale gets it in range. The polygon premiere 4 is also great and is even less.

@downtoridemtb3 жыл бұрын
The difference of one degree might not be felt but going from old school 70 to something decent like 67 or less is noticeable. You don’t feel like you’re so far over the front wheel and therefore in more control and fell less likely to flip over the bars. I suggest you go test some different bikes and see for yourself.

Quick update, giant talon 4's price on 2022 versions became crazy, just dont buy it. it's 700 euro with very basic components like xct, mechanical breaks, tourney rear deraileur etc... Also I would say Merida big nine bikes are better than Specialized ones in 2021. Way better price/quality ratio while Merida owns 50% of Specialized.

That "1 by drivetrain is better" nonsense.... The more gears you have in the rear cassette, the thinner the chain. Ergo, more maintenance and more expenses for sustaining the bike. The more prone to failure. Especially for people who want a cheap bike in the long run, the classic 3 front and fewer in the rear is the way to go.

@downtoridemtb3 жыл бұрын
Entry level components are not meant to handle harsh downhill riding. For blue and green trails trails they are fine… which also happen to be the type of trails one rides when they are learning so it kind of makes sense.
