@@audiophileman7047 Manufacturers of door knobs should include them in their kits. I understand it may not happen for the same reasons you mentioned, but I do think it should be a standard. Same goes for when the doors are milled, it should already be pre cut to the dimensions of the security strike plate. At least for exterior doors.

I love the strike plate a lot. They make the door so much more secure. I worked apartment maintenance and the girls boy friend kicked in the door. Well when I fixed the door I used the longer screws and plate. Sure enough he came back and tried to kick the door in The police said he broke his foot and the picked him up and took him to jail. The police loved my method.

The furniture pads + wall protector pads gave me an idea: I put furniture pads on the back of my desk, which backs up to a wall and scuffs it and pinches cords that go behind the desk. Now the walls and the cords are protected!

The 3” screws are definitely better then the 3/4”, but the problem still exists because that new strike plate is still being install into the last 1/2” of the doorframe making it super easy to split when kicked. After having our front door kicked in at 2:36 am during Christmas vacation, I learned about a better striker plate called The Bulldog it’s 3” wide plate which has a 4” steel rod welded to the backside requiring you to drill a 1/2” hole through the door frame and adjacent 2x4, Requiring both pieces of wood to split.

The strike plate is great but all homes should also have a deadbolt. For the freezing pipes I live in Canada. Best thing to do is have a shut off valve in the inside of the house to kill the flow and then always leave the tap outside open so as the water expands when feeezes it has an exit possible or it will burst the pipe Love your tips!

I used one of those faucet covers in Chicago because the previous owners put tile over the inside shut off valve. And it was not a freeze-proof faucet. That cover got me through several winters without a problem.

Just a tip with the wall protection pads. Once you install it, just paint it the same color as the wall and it's a lot less noticeable while still protecting the wall. It's especially useful if you have a non-neutral color of the wall like a blue or soft green or something.

A great list. I have those felt pads on EVERYTHING that touches my hardwoods. A bit more expensive (so over your $10 threshold), but IMO equally indispensable: A decent hand held fire extinguisher. Don't let a kitchen grease fire, a knocked over candle, a small gasoline fire because you spilled on the hot lawnmower exhaust, or similar small fire spread and destroy your home. Adequate models for the home can be had for as little as $25 (per the website of my closest big box home center). A bit of Google Fu will reveal free, on line courses on how to properly employ a fire extinguisher.

Furniture pads... keep gravel etc off floors too. If you slide furniture, it will drag the gravel and scratch floor.

Those strike plates also need backing behind where they're mounted on the door jamb, prevents spreading the jam wider. So you'll need possibly a small flat bar for removing the casing aka door trim, a nailer or hammer and counter sink, as well as some plywood to use as backing. So installing those safety plates us a bit more involved then is being let on.

Very nice recommendation, though I had to chuckle at the first one :D Where I live its standard to have a 5point security door everywhere. I think its coding standard for new houses. The frame is drilled into the bricks and the door locks in 5 places all around when you lift the handle. Then you can lock the handle. My neighbour lady has a horizontal bolt too on top of this security system :D

Superb video! I’ve got the same doors and glass doorknobs in my 1950 home. Painting faded quickly even with good primer. I ended up stripping 18 doors with heat gun, carbide scraper, and modified tools for the molding insets. After getting to the bare wood, I sanded with a 220, primed, and then painted with ultra pure white. 14-15 hours per door but damn they look awesome 🤩 Thanks for sharing your knowledge! KILLZ is basically ceilling paint touch up too. I use pro mar 200 and half the time when I spray prime I can’t even find the spot I sprayed when I go to touch up the paint

#5 wall protector pads were a godsend because my puppy chewed the rubber off of the door stop

I think better than the wall pads are the adjustable door stops that you install on the hinge pin of the door. Has a threaded adjustable screw with a firm rubber pad on the end that allows you to set the stopping distance of the door. And since they’re attached to the pin that’s usually behind an open door, they’re usually invisible.

I have all hardwood floors (plus some linoleum in "wet" rooms) and I can vouch for the furniture pads. I'll add that the adhesive on them, no matter what brand, isn't the greatest, so even after proper cleaning of the furniture feet the pads will slide around before too long. Help things out by using a light coat of good strong glue on the bottom of the furniture - I've used the thicker Gorilla Construction Adhesive in the tube. They haven't budged one bit in over four years now, despite the furniture being moved for cleaning twice a week.

Rewatched your video on Door Corner Seals before installing them. However, all it did was move the gap higher. So, I took your advice and added a second seal just above, so it was double-high, but again, the gap just moved further up. Any additional advice you have on fixing this problem would be appreciated. Will definitely be making a trip to the hardware store for several of those strike plates! Thank you for the reminder I obviously needed.

Pull the weather strip back first and make sure you put the fat end in all the way tite between the existing weatherstrip and the jamb,(wood)

Yup, as soon as we moved into out rental, the first thing I did was check the screws on the strike plates and the door hinges. An easy upgrade that the landlord won't even notice was done. :)

We used 3” screws for our front door hinges and got a security strike plate for the dead bolt that also had a metal box that surround the 1” bolt itself with additional screws in the back of it. We had a double dead bolt on a solid oak door that had a stained glass pane window. The burglar tried to get a screwdriver in between the jam and the door but because it fit so tight he wasn’t able to, we could tell from the scratches. He broke the glass but since we had a double dead bolt, couldn’t turn the lock and the window was too small to get in through. He then pried and chiseled the solid ash molding as well as 4” of studs so that he could free up the deadbolt box with 3” screws. There was a pile of wood shavings/chips on the floor. Nothing is foolproof. We then had a front door that couldn’t be latched but the police assured us that the burglar wouldn’t be back. We had to have someone come and barricade the front door from the inside with several 2x4’s screwed into the wall studs and had to use the garage as our access. Neighbors were home but apparently saw nothing even though they tried to pry off the front window since the screen was broken and tossed aside and he also broke both wooden 6’ gates to gain access to the backyard but footprints only went so far because of my 2 large dogs who were outside.

I use Killz at work on outdoor signposts. It will cover up certain stains from flower petals or graffiti, but will not prevent new stains from setting in. And it’s soooo expensive we swapped to a cheaper one and didn’t notice a difference.

I got the large security strike plates for my house (front door, door to the garage, and door from the garage to the back yard) and it actually improved how the doors closed. Especially the one from the house to the garage. You couldn't just swing the door closed, it would just bounce open, but after replacing the crappy cheap strike plate with the big security one, I have never had to worry about it.

We live in an isolated area so not quite as concerned about break ins, but it is also very windy and we have problems with the doors not latching as well as they should. On the sticky pads, if it's something you might not notice damage is being done, I'd avoid the sticky pad as well. these pads tend to come off easily and if it's somewhere you can't notice damage to the floor, you're not going to notice that the pad is missing. Sticky pads are alright on objects you don't plan on moving but want to keep from damaging cheap floors if they do move, but for anything that you actually plan on regularly sliding or shifting on the floor, get the kind that tack in or affix with some more secure method.

Agreed! I've never noticed a chair or other oft-moved item where the pads weren't more of an annoying "stick them back on temporarily every time you sweep" issue than actually helpful. Putting them on with epoxy or something can work though, but at that point you might as well use cheaper (& often thicker/better) felt pieces anyway

A long time ago, I bought a faucet protector. Maybe I was being dense, but I couldn’t figure out how to adhere it. My faucets come through siding; could that be why? When single digit cold occurs here (Winston Salem) fortunately, it doesn’t last long and I’ve never had a problem. When I tried to install those long screws on my deadbolt strike plate, I couldn’t get them all the way in. However, since then, I purchased a new drill and the Dap product you talked about in a video to prevent the bit slipping and stripping screw heads. Time to try again. I got a tube for each of my siblings; awesome product! Thanks for the reminders.

Put the inside loop around the faucet handle. Put the housing flush to your siding. Pull the cord straight out to tighten it and slide the adjustable piece against the housing to secure it. Winston-Salem resident too!

You will have a hard time spraying your ceiling with a can of primer like this period they specifically make up shot primer for spraying ceilings. If you don't use up shot you will probably get frustrated at the amount of air you let out of the can and the amount of spit that kicks out. When you lose air out of the can you eventually lose product at the end.

Doorknob pads versus the springy stoppers to protect the doors? You showed the pads here, but do you like those springs as well? Also, the previous homeowner used the door blocker that you drill into the floor. In 1 place, I would stub my toe on it all the time, but in 2 other places are solid blockers of the door and doorknob. Any thoughts about them versus the door pads? Otherwise, great video. I loved the primer and strike pads. I'm about to set up a boarding house and will keep the deeper screws in mind. We might use aluminum/steel studs instead of wood, so if you have an alternate idea with installing the strike pads because of metal studs, that would be super helpful.

They barely make the door more secure. I've seen a 100 doors kicked in I've seen a 100 doors take a crowbar and just pop right open even with this extra metal plate. Personally it's all in your head. If someone wants them they're coming. But by all means spend the money if it helps you sleep at night... What would really do you good is to pop the casing off of your door and see if you have sufficient block in between your jam and the rough opening. Without sufficient blocking it's easy to spread any door jam open. In fact it is now code in Kansas City to put this blocking in.

One other item you might add is spiked carpet caster cup protectors. They are like the furniture pads, but for carpet. We put new carpet in the living room, and my wife didn't want the furniture dents. Just be warned that you can't slide the furniture anymore, so either be ready to lift or never move them again.

Another thing to make sure of, security plates or not, is that the dead latch on your door hardware is engaging properly. Without that little slider working, your latch is subject to slip attacks (sliding a shim in to release the latch). All it takes is adjusting the plate properly. I always find it amusing when people talk about window and door security. The easiest way into a house without full first floor masonry, particularly one built in the 70's- early 90's is right through the wall. Houses in that era commonly have sheathing made of pitch covered fiberboard. A few good kicks will get you through the siding, sheathing, insulation and sheetrock. OSB would fair a bit better and plywood may require a sledge or maul to weaken it but the end result is the same. Discrete entry into a house and the ability to unlock any doors to make your egress less conspicuous. Even easier still is simply picking the lock. Most door locks can easily be raked or bumped with only a few on the market requiring single pin picking. Two other weak points are modern building codes typically requiring the interior side of locks to not require a key to open the door even when there are windows in the door and the fact that smart locks and openers can be hacked with a laser pointer if they are in line of sight of a window, sometimes even through a mirror.

You're technically correct, but you're not accounting for contextual behavioral facts. 99.9% of people motivated to break & enter into a home are NOT about to make a dramatic destructive attention-grabbing entry like that. They'll find another target. Security isn't just about what's theoretically possible (although that should of course be considered & your point is still valuable), but also about human behavior. The vast majority of people the vast majority of the time don't need to worry about anything past the "making every entry method more difficult than simply crashing through a wall" level.
