it's so dumb to me that no one makes popup headlights anymore because they're "dangerous to pedestrians", meanwhile this 7000lb chunk of steel with sharp corners is totally fine
@C.I...25 күн бұрын
I'm not sure they were banned on pedestrian safety grounds - I believe they just became redundant when the US government started allowing smaller and non-standardised headlight designs on cars, and no longer specified a minimum headlight height. Pop up headlights were to allow a large, standard-shaped headlight to be lower when not in use, while meeting the minimum height requirement when in use.

Pop up headlights disappeared as DRL became a requirement. The same regulation changes that brought DRLs also removed the height requirement for headlights that had made pop ups popular in the first place. Not wanting to miss any of the episodes, I would let my boys have whatever they wanted, and they let me watch Top Gear. Then, one weekend, I was deeply immersed in one of the episodes, with the trio of Clarkson, May, and Hammond's antics. Both my boys suddenly started laughing watching that episode. Subsequently, we were buddies watching Top Gear every weekend. My boys are now young adults, and when they come around on the weekends, we watch one of the episodes. That is my bonding with my boys. The curve reduces flexing
@ravecrab6 күн бұрын
@@occashares I'd argue it actually builds some flexing into the material - a panel is put under tension by its fixings at the edges, which is where the crumpled look comes from with something too flat.
@occashares6 күн бұрын
@@ravecrab I suppose we are looking at the issue from two different perspectives. When making air conditioning ducting two folds were made diagonally to form a cross on the center. This would reduce drumming and flexing due to resonance. It was simple to do with a sheet metal folder. Putting a convex or concave curve is much more difficult requiring a press. Having a panel being flat it will resonate freely, putting it under tension will only raise the resonate frequency.

@nagranoth_23 күн бұрын
there's a huge difference between understanding design wise you need to shape something a certain way, and 100% accuracy during production. Also, a mm misalignment does not change the overal appearance of flat shiny pnels, a slight curve does. That being said, I'm not convinced they designed it to the level James thinks. Big panels are going to have a tendency to bow, especially considering expansion and contraction due to temperature, so they probably designed the attachments so that at least they bow outwards because that looks best. But I doubt there's any precision engineering to exact curves. They'll just have a tolerance.
@DudeMcSky21 күн бұрын
the panels on most vehicles produced at scale don't align completely flush. James mentions this when he is pointing out the Dodge Ram (that he forgot to record) ...the curvature of the panels on most vehicles hide these imperfections. @@lj03oem A ruler. Both are somewhat correct. A rule starts at the edge like a tape measure would, and a ruler starts inwards a bit so if the edge is damaged you can still take measurement from the "0" mark, or easier to measure two points on paper and line up the "0" mark. You can not hold a ruler against something to take accurate measurement from the short side.
