I remember using a no 6 hammer mill to grind feed every week. We used an H or an old F-20 to power it. An A might be underpowered to get anything done. Nice video; thanks for the memory!

vmdairy That's a Super A, not a plain A. It does ok with the #6, just can't rush it.

ScottyRockTrains Yeah I saw it but it has a few issues nothing terrible but I think the guy wants a little much with all that has to be fixed. It needs a new Hood and radiator .

Why does the belt need to be a mile long? Seems kinda stupid

It's not that long. Looks like a 50' belt, which is a standard hammermill belt. (Belts are measured by the length they are before laced or vulcanized together) Hammermill belts are thinner than a conventional drive belt so they grip the small pulleys on the mill, and go around them better. The long belt is heavy and therefore harvests momentum, it acts as a flywheel. But for a drive belt, that's fairly short. Larger belt driven machinery such as a sawmill or a thresing machine belts of up to 150' are used. Also, it's good to keep the tractor away from the hammermill a ways because they produce a lot of dust. The belt was too loose in my opinion. It looks longer, too, because a Farmall A with a rear mounted pulley is used. A Farmall M with the pulley in the middle of the tractor also makes a difference in the appearance of the length of the belt.
