If you are interested in martial arts and/or grappling, you should give it a try. If you live in the United States, classes are usually relatively cheap (I've heard this is true in other parts of the world too, though), and clubs/schools usually don't have a problem with taking people on who are new to the sport. I can say personally that it's one of the most intense workouts I've ever had, and randori is a lot of fun because it gives you the opportunity to hone and combine the techniques that are best for your body type and mindset, thereby allowing you to develop a fighting style that is unique to you.

In my opinion, it really is as exciting to play as it is to watch. I think what makes it so exciting is that any match can end in an instant if one judoka throws the other with "impetus and control". Of course, these kinds of throws exist in other grappling arts as well, like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling. However, since executing one of these throws in other grappling sports is usually not match-ending, I feel like the tension that occurs in judo when the competitors first lock up and get their grips is a lot higher.
@byronguerra88126 жыл бұрын
I also like to remind myself when watching that these people are performing these moves on other highly trained competitors who know what to watch for and defend. Imagine an uneducated aggressor to someone who is just a moderate practitioner suddenly being tossed and smashed onto asphalt or concrete, Game over.

I learned Judo on an army base some years ago. For almost three weeks, I had to devote ALL my time just on learning all the ways to fall and roll out from a throw. It seemed so boring and useless, especially while watching the others on the other end of the mat having fun doing the throws, etc. Over many years and experiences, you come to realize just how important those first few weeks are. Years later, I learned to snow ski. My first instructor taught most of the basics well, except how to stop. So my first time up the mountain, I took off like a jet, and what he had taught me about how to stop was not working. I just kept gaining more speed. Getting close to a cluster of trees, I knew I had to stop. So, I knew I had to fall. My judo knowledge kept me very safe in that fall. Fortunately, my next ski instructor did teach me how to stop. :-)

I trained Judo 3 years straight before I moved to Taekwondo. Most useful I learned in this three years was how to fall/roll without getting hurt, even on concrete. Cool.

Jesus, where did you train? That's all you got in three years? Not even so much as a choke or an armbar?

Out of all the classical martial arts, id say judo is probably the most practical and useful for real world self defence.

Judo is not a martial 'art', it is a martial 'sport'. As you see, it is awesome. The judoka are incredibly talented and conditioned to absorb body collisions and being thrown/slammed to the ground. If a referee is in attendance. If the competitors are being judged. It's a sport. If the only judges are the Gods of War. If the only referee is the combatants self restraint. That's a Martial Art. Different mindset. Different goals.

Here after watching for the 20th time Mifune's video. And as a complete rookie I can barely appreciate the focus and techinique in each of these fighters, I have to repeat and get frame by frame the moves, each fighters possitions, where the weight is and goes, how the hands are wrapped, etc. And none of this gets even close to Mifune's technique. One of the main differences is that I can see how Mifune dances with his opponents and strikes in one moment of distraction, while these competitors, every time the feel attacked, the immediate reaction is ressistance.

I've been bounced off the mat a few times. Met some really amazing Judoka in my time. The best Judoka fight standing straight up, and bam!...they're under you, and you're flying lol! Good times!
