I always forget about creating corps and armadas when looking for desperation era score. You can max out your religion too.

If you're going to buy great people, you may want to wait until the scientists and engineers that give bonuses to space race projects. And don't forget to get the royal academy, it lets you directly convert gold into space race production

It might be more efficient to run commercial hub or holy site projects than hard building things as the Mali. Not sure though. Haven't done the math.

I found Nazca as my first city state in my Mali game, got the monastary one later on as well. It was brutal :D

Potato, why do you keep chopping jungle underneath mining resources? You realize that the jungle stays if you put a mine on the amber, right? That was a change a long time ago, so you are just killing 1 food in exchange for a little boost. In most cases that isn't worth a builder charge until the end of the renaissance era/industrial era. In a culture game I would understand but here appeal really is a non-issue.

Better to have more food and production right now than more later, especially when Civ is so determined by the early game. You want to get out districts and settlers as fast as possible to start snowballing, and losing 1 food per turn is a very small price to pay. Especially since food is arguably the worst yield after early game, since your growth will be capped by housing or amenities aswell.

It gives like 60 food? depending on era etc. Well a 60 turn payoff is really not worth it. It's better to get bonuses early and use that to snowball the ai already starts with so much more than the player.

University Sankore wouldn't have been a bad choice because of its very particular placement requirements you'd be more likely to get it.

Maybe I got a bad start(I'm also new) but the civs are way ahead of me and it's the end of the industrial era. I also can't generate as much gold(679)

I like how you play. There is one thing I am wondering, you aren't changing your cards very often. For example, the builder card or the upgrade cards aren't necessary all the time. Why not optimizing by upgrading or building builder in batch then swap out of the cards?

Hey, is it possible to effectively play tall in this game or is playing wide the only reasonable strategy?

It seems like districts became a bit cheaper so I think wide is still the way to go but it also looks like growth rates have increased, cities are just becoming so large now. In the vanilla game it was virtually impossible to have a 20 population city without investing a lot of resources which meant it just wasn't worth it. Now that does seem to be doable more easily.

Playing wide is definitely stronger, but there are mods to make playing tall viable.
