For those getting into Wedding photo and video - Wedding couples aren't models in a photo studio, just like for wedding filmmaking (my career), they're not actors on a movie set. Yes you can try to make things look as best as possible, but most of the time, you can't use all your tools to get the "best" photo or best footage (which is hard to accept, but essential to becoming the best you can be given the situations and you have that moment).

Exactly! You gotta make due with what you have but you can definitely put people in the "best light" pardon the pun. Most weddings are 90% photojournalism and 10% staged and the posed photos are definitely part of the staged percentage. That said, you can still do a TON of creative embellishment on the photojournalism side with clever bounce flash, shallow depth of field, focal length choice, and choosing a smart direction to shoot from. I think videographers have it harder in some ways because you don't have the advantage of quick flash photography and the ability to cull everything but a single 1/200th of a second in time. That said, I think photographers have it harder because each image has to stand on its own and each image is viewed for a much longer period of time. I love editing video because it's the story and the edit that makes it compelling so any one shot or moment has a lot of forgiveness. Both disciplines have a lot of overlaps but are super unique as well. -P

This is why I opted to stop going for strobe photography for weddings and achieve the strobe look using gradients in post. That way I can give my brides dozens of bangers during formals in a limited window

Interesting but it's also 3x more expensive and doesn't have the stud on the end (only a 1/4" thread). But yeah it looks like a similar tabletop light stand -P

I wouldn't waste time on the last one unless you spend a ton of time practicing and perfecting the setup

I used this same setup for every departure shot. Only difference was I had the flash on camera pointing forward. -P

What white balance did you use at 7:31 ?

It was shot on location at 4000K but I tweaked it to 3700K in Lightroom. -P

What Nikon DSLR do you use for this shoot?

D850. I've tried to convert over to one of their mirrorless but the video features and a few other things have prevented me from making the jump. I find the D850 is still great for stills and we use Sony A7sIII cameras for video as well as some of our older Panasonic GH5s. One day I hope there is a camera that does it all but at the moment the Sony still seems the best. -P

You don’t have to buy Profoto but if you shoot weddings professionally you really should buy a few flashes just to be prepared for anything that comes your way. -P
