Pye is absolutely right on his lighting techniques. However, I find technique #2, where he uses lighting stands, to be cumbersome because it doesn't give you flexibility when people are moving around. Better to use an assistant holding a light. The assistant can move around wherever you want the directional light to emanate from.

In a room with all blue surfaces, would you use a blue gel on your bounce light?
@papsny Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the Manfrotto Nano stand be too short that it would cast shadows on the subject? Typically 10-13 ft would be preferred for OCF light stands. Also, wouldn't it be better to have 3 or 4 lights on every corner to give that 3D look?. I tried the 1-2 light approach and problem is, some subjects move around a lot.
@DanielCharnitsky Жыл бұрын
A followup to my previous post. When you mentioned for minimizing the very warm ambient light - you said add a full or half CTO gel and turn you camera wb to 36-3800 kelvin. Is this the norm or do you vary those settings. I suppose if you use a half CTO gel, there may be a more desirable warmest background in the images ???

Great video, as always! My recurrent question is "When you're walking around taking natural candid shots using on-camera flash and the Magbounce, how close to ambient do you set the camera exposure? Do you use manual or some kind of auto? Are you using TTL for the on camera flash? This problem has been bugging me forever, so any insight would be appreciated.
@MagnetMod Жыл бұрын
Hey Randy, this is Trevor with MagMod. It can depend on the look I am going for but often times if I want to show off a little bit of the ambient light (for example say they have colored uplights around the room) then I usually under expose the ambient about 1 stop, sometimes 2 depending on how bright those lights are. I do this in manual on the camera, usually with the ISO. As I will set my shutter around 1/60th, and aperture between 1.2 - 4.5 depending on the look I am after, and then dial in the ISO to the exposure I want. As for the flashes, I always shoot on Manual, not TTL (ETTL). I'd rather have a consistent flash power coming out every single time so I can know what to expect and how to adjust for it, then let my flash decide by shooting it on one of those other settings. Again depending on what I am trying to accomplish I might have the flash power between 1/128 and 1/16th power. If I could only pick one flash power and leave it on all night it would probably be around 1/32nd power. Hope that helps!

I was wondering how do yo do your headshots? Peter Hurley seems to use continuous light. Do you use flash or continuous light? Also which one will prevent people from winking at the wrong time.
@marciglianophotography6245 Жыл бұрын
You can use either...Ive done hundreds using strobes (flash). Neither will "prevent" it. Some people just seem to blink a lot, but I've found it's pretty rare. The strobe flash is so quick the natural blink happens after the shot.

When - if - you work a wedding alone, how cumbersome is it to position your O.C.F. on a stand? And, do people ever knock it over?
@EdwinA.Hernández-Caraballo2 ай бұрын
One (maybe silly) question from someone who doesn´t shoot weddings: how do you stop people from tripping over your light stands? One the one hand, I don´t see any sandbags on them, and on the other, people is moving, dancing (and drinking) all around them... It seems to me like a disaster waiting to happen. Thanks in advance!

Would the Statue of Liberty method work well with a constant light? I ask because my flashes (Westcott FJ80s) have the transmitters built into the flash. And I can't see myself lugging two flashes over my head for extended periods of time.
@pmarcig Жыл бұрын
Then you'll be that guy with the light shining in everyone's faces when they're dancing. Why would you need to lug two flashes over your head?
@KennethDillard Жыл бұрын
@@pmarcig- Because my flashes have transmitters built into them. I don't have a standalone transmitter that can I trigger to fire a flash. So, make the SOL work without constant flash, I'd have to have one flash on my camera (in sleep mode for the actual flash), set to trigger the second flash in my hand.
@pmarcig Жыл бұрын
That would be odd. Lol. I’d just use that one on your camera hotshoe as your transmitter, slap a mod on that one, and have your other one or two setup in the corners as slaves. It’s not SOL but it’s not *that much* different. You just lose the angling of the main flash (which I get is the point) but you are prob more stable and not blinding people with an always on light.
@KennethDillard Жыл бұрын
@@pmarcig - I may try that at my next wedding. Thanks.

My absolute favorite lighting technique is to upgrade to a 1.4 lens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ all jokes aside, I usually drop down like 1 stop to preserve as much ambient as possible then figure out the sweet spot power-wise when on-camera.

why use grid and sphere together? it makes no sense. a grid makes a light pattern narrower, a sphere makes it wider. it is like using blue and yellow gel together. and you lose a lot of flash power.
@MagnetMod Жыл бұрын
It's a popular question that comes up and we have a few places where we share the effect. One of our most recent videos also shows how they work together. I think you'll enjoy the entire video, but if you wanted to see just the section about the MagSphere + MagGrid it's at about 3:30 in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJC3YX2Gd5Kpq7c

The last part "Statue of Liberty" it seems really difficult because 1st your shooting 1 handedly and 2nd crowded dance floor. it is not practical to do that..
@MagnetMod Жыл бұрын
It's not the easiest method, and there are ways to make it easier (like using a lightweight smaller lens) - but it is a go to even I have used at wedding receptions. Might not be the most practical but gets the job done and delivers great results.
