Here's a 6 month food forest update, I still can't believe it has been 6 months since we planted this young permaculture forest full of native Australian plants. If you've been wondering what the native food forest looks like after 6 months then this tour through my native food forest is for you! I spent $500 on all the bush tucker plants planted in this forest, which I planted after our pigs tilled the area. So come tour through my native Australia food forest, and discover all the Australian native edible plants which you can grow in your own temperate food forests. We are newbie to this as well and are learning as we go, so there will be mistakes along the way, but hopefully I can make these mistake in my permaculture food forest with Australian natives, so you can have a beautiful garden for yours.

Question of the day: What's your favourite native ingredient/plant? Don't forget to take a moment to like and subscribe, and if you're feeling extra generous you can donate to the channel by following the link: www.buymeacoffee.com/dianeandsamson (we can put it towards more native plants for the forest - every bit helps!) ❤❤

Native raspberry! So yummy. Your native area is looking fantastic. I can't wait to dry and grind salt bush . Sounds delicious. I got my 100 seeds for yam daisy just a few days ago . We want them eventually to grow in our back few acres of bush. I'm going to try to grow them like tube stock then I'm thinking maybe to use little tree guards to protect them for a while, once I plant out . We have one little wattle tree here , I love it . I just checked and its not budding yet but should in the next month or two . Thank you for the tour honey 💚

Lomandra IS edible! Young leaves can be plucked, the white bases chewed (pea-like taste). Flowers can be soaked in water to extract nectar. Ripe seeds can be ground and added to breads or baking. (Indigenous people also used the leaves for weaving baskets) 🥰❤️🌏🌹

🌳 I can see you put a lot of work and love into growing!I hope gardening brings you as much joy as it brings me. b It’s the start of my 3 year gardening but there is still so much for me to learn and I appreciate you sharing your food forest. It’s inspirational to me. I’d love the idea of a growing that way. I look forward to hopefully learning more from each other as we grow!

Thank you so much gorgeous one, it certainly does bring me so much joy. A hobby I never quite appreciated or had much time for growing up, which now consumes all my thoughts! It has really allowed me to see the world in a new way - I'm always observing plants and seeing if I can save seeds from them or propagate them now haha!

BE AWARE there are many wattles that produce seeds and pods that are highly poisonous too. Telling the difference between the poisonous ones and edible ones is difficult.
@DiandSam

Yes I am still scared to try them out as I can not tell the difference!

Yay update on your food forest. Your first food forest when you planted it out was the first video that drew me to your channel. Just bought today small leaved tamarind tree and black apple tubestock from local landcare. Your garden looks awsome. Animals and people will love it.

I am so thrilled that you enjoy learning with me! I have some grand plans for the forest this year, not a lot has been happening down there as the young trees establish, but now I'm finally ready to put in a path! Those sound like great varieties, let me know how they go!

Have you thought about planting wattles in this area. So you can chop and drop to create mulch. They only last 10 years then naturally die off. I love my wattles it's crazy the birds that know when the seeds are ready to eat. We get black/ white cockatoos, king parrots and cockateils.
@DiandSam
@DiandSam 2 жыл бұрын
Dont need to plant them nature does it for us!! There are so many in our forest which we will do exactly that 😊 ooo interesting about the black cokatoos, were getting lots at the moment, maybe its getting close to time!?

I have but they are very expensive plants for the size. I did get a couple of planta from them early on. Most of my plants now I get from our local nursery, and I have discovered a nursery North of us run by the indigenous community of the area sso Id love to support them next! The shipping cost is what has halted me for now. xx

Yes, postage is expensive. The same with canning jars. It’s Cheaper getting jars from USA than from Melbourne.

Definately finger lime pearls in a gin and tonic! Have added a Davisdson Plum recently and saltbush grows locally. We have had warragul greens in the past but sadly find it invasive. Grows between pavers in my neighbours place. Your native food forest is a lovely place 👌 - intrigued by the native guava.

YUM a man after my heart! Finger lime trees seem to be hard to come by around here 😔 one day! Shame about the warrigal greens, I learnt that they were one of the few plants European settlers accepted into their diet when they came over to Aus, such a fascinating one!
