I’m number 3 out of 10 children. I wish my parents would have provided for us like you do for your family. We were very poor and lived in abandoned houses with trash bags for windows and no running water. I have 4 grown children and I to this day hoard food and supplies not only for daily use but also for emergencies and keep enough for everyone in our family to share. I went to 17 different schools up to my sophomore year because my parents were constantly running from CPS. I promised my kids would stay in the same school district and they did. We have lived in the same house for 17 years and I still have 3 adult children living at home….lol. I can’t get them to spread their wings yet….lol.

There are a few things (like the red wheat berries, rice) that I’m just going to Mylar package part of it for a long term storage item and leave it alone, but for the most part I’m planing to keep replenishing the stock as we use it so that it always stays fresh.

If you’re storing your grains in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers there is NO NEED to freeze first. Removing the oxygen will kill all critters. If you do go the freeze route, be sure to let items thaw completely; retained moisture would not be good. Great haul!

My freezers are full to the brim so, I’ve purchased food grade diatomaceous earth to kill and keep critters away. I’ve found that it’s actually a nutrient our bodies benefit from and it’s completely tasteless. It’s also a great pesticide to keep critters off vegetable plants in the spring. I would wear a mask when using it because the powder is very fine..it’s definitely not something you want to breathe in. I have an unheated room at the back of my house where I will be storing my grains for extra protection. Plus, it’s best to mill frozen grains to keep them cool and maintain their nutrients. Just be sure to keep them in an airtight bucket…mice will chew through bags.

Freezing your grains is really important. Freeze them for 3 days and remove let set out for 3 days and put back into freezer for 3 days to kill the eggs that will hatch. Then remove and let set out as long as it takes to get all moisture out to prevent mold/ Also if you put into 5 gallong airtight buckets you can get from lowes or Tractor supply or if you order online. You will need the tool that will remove the regular lids that you seal your buckets with. Also place some bay leaves in your buckets or inside the mylar bags before you seal them in your buckets. This in no way affects the flavor of your grains or rice. A prepper placed his grains in just mylar bags and they became infested with the bugs. Alway's place your mylar bags in buckets or some even place in metal trash cans because rodents will eat through the mylar bags. It is a lot of expense to store your food when you first begin but these items will last you for years to come! Also I learned this and it made me sick that I had thrown away so much food in the past. The date on canned foods and other items are best if used by this date. Canned vegetables and fruit and meats in can's that are not dented will last 5 years past the date on the can. Spam which is a a valued and most loved food in Hawaii most people here would turn their noses up to it but fried it is really good and a can of Spam has been proven to last 10 years past the date on the can. I subscribed to your you tube vlog and I so admire you for really getting prepared! Because it is coming when people will be starving. Also store up on medical supplies. Actually I worked in the medical field many years. For bandages if it a big would the best thing to have on hand is buy feminine pads at the dollar tree they will work well. Also buy cheap tampons at the dollar remove the tampon from the container and they are grear at starting a fire. I always watch her vlogs on you tube and this woman is packed with so much wisdom called appalachia's Homestead! I will be learning so much from you and look forward to it. This is all new to us all we never thought we would live through something like this in our life time but it is real ! God bless you and your family!

I want to do a stock pile but that upfront cost scares me 😂 I’m not sure if you know this or not but it’s pointless to do some gluten free products and still eat gluten. Gluten sticks in your gut for 6-8 weeks and is a all or nothing type of food. 2 of my kids can’t eat gluten at all and if somehow they eat something with gluten in it, it takes them a few weeks to feel better. I only wanted to let you know that info because gf food is expensive and honestly if you don’t need/want to be 100% gluten free than I wouldn’t buy it. I’m praying this didn’t come across as rude because that wasn’t my intention I was just letting you know about it in case you didn’t know and obviously you can keep doing it I was just trying to save you money.. I need to start doing more from scratch cooking because gf premade things are insanely pricey. 😉🥰

Yes I’m aware 😃 We actually avoid eating wheat that isn’t properly fermented, which means homemade everything. So for the things that I am not making myself we chose to eat gluten-free. Hope that makes sense ☺️

@@jasonandjulie absolutely makes sense 😉.. I was hoping I didn’t come across rude, hard to explain with context .. I would love some gf recipes because I need to stop buying prepackaged and save some money..

Also never put oxygen savers in your stored sugar or salt it will make it hard as a brick. It's expensive but honey and you may have someone near you who sells their honey and maple syrup these are great sweetners. Also remember you will get tired of just water buy teabags which I also place in my freezer after I had an infestation and it spreads to everything. I had to call a professional to come to my house and he said these days most of their calls are from infestations of these bugs. Due to the products being stored in warehouse and the bugs spread so fast! But I bought packets of sweetened kool aid , and kool aid in plastic container's, even tang when you find these items but sugar is good for sweet tea but I add honey to my cups of hot tea and herbal tea. Sorry for the words I did not spell correctly my dog is sitting on my lap I really look forward to your future vlogs and I will pass it on to friends I know who are learning to prep. God bless you!

The pink salt you bought has so many minerals in it your body needs but you will need some iodized salt for your body, I also love Jammerrill Stewart!

World shortages of salt and tomatoes. California pulled tomatoes plants due to drought and Italy had a tomato blight. Salt, worker shortages?

My husband is a salt miner for Morton Salt. I can tell you that there are definitely no salt shortages 😉

Julie, wouldn't you consider....making your 'own' ...laundry detergent ??? Like making your own soap ?? Doesn't have to be 'caustic'...and children could make their own soap ???
@jasonandjulie3 жыл бұрын
We did do that for a little bit. Right now though I am able to get the Costco one inexpensively so I’ve been sticking with that. Lots of other “to do’s” on the list lately 😃

What’s the deal with toilet paper. You can’t eat it so why are people hoarding it?
