Hey mate just watched your review. Now a truck towing 60T of fuel is not heavier than its load. I've had 200 series, ram, patrol etc towed large boats and caravans. Now I had a van it weighed 3.9T empty. Un modified 200 series towed it easily and stable. But wanted to be compliant, brought a Ram and fuck me I was on the wrong side of the road trying to tow with this van. I now have a Mercedes, and I find it to be the best tow vehicle I've ever experienced. (ML 63) It blows my mind that I wasted so much money on the Japan cars and a second hand cheap Merc blows them all away.

The AUS NB1 Quartermaster Cab Chassis (base trim) Petrol has a kerb weight of 2,446kg & the Diesel has a kerb weight of 2,527kg both including 90% fuel tank full & all other fluids at the correct level. The total gross weight of both versions is 3,550kg Higher trim levels do have a higher kerb weight. E.g. Trialmaster with dual battery, tow pack, additional wiring, RAI, KO2 tyres, diff locks, smooth pack, all adds approx. 100kg. So with load capacity is 1,104 kg & 1,023 kg respectively with 81 litres of fuel. Most manufacturers either don't include the fuel or don't state if it does or not when they quote a kerb weight. So if you add a Norweld canopy & tray at 289 kg and the extras for Trialmaster spec at 100 kg that still leaves 700 kg & 625 kg respectively. Logic says you would add an extended fuel tank at the same time.

Love your channel. I'm an Aussie, so I guess that is why you do not include the Ford Everest whose V6 diesel has the same carrying capacity as the Prado, and also the Y63 is scheduled for sometime in 2026 in Oz. Nice thing about a Land Rover Defender is you can just attach a caravan and drive off - the air suspension levels everything. It has 774kg carrying versus Prado GXL's 610kg. It legal to remove its rear seats to which adds carrying capacity - it's illegal in Australia to remove the Prado 250's rear seats. The Defender needs an extra fuel tank for towing but its carrying capacity means it works out. Also the Prado 250 in Oz has 110 litres fuel capacity - the same as the LC 300. Downside with many of these is they carry Ad-blue - the LC 300 does not. For towing the base model LC300 has 85kg more than the rest of the 300s and it's a lot cheaper. Compared to a Prado its $20k more but as features goes up our Ozzie luxury taxes make it worse and worse value. The Ineos looks great to me but for two issues: terrible turning circle and "serviceability" in the bush (serviceability is a Land Rover problem too). Not sure about a Ford. I suspect though the Ineos hardware will be long lasting, but a breakdown is a breakdown and it's a very foreign kettle to boil in Australia's outback. Also note that Hilux sell the 2,4 diesel without Ad-Blue. Imagine the 250 Prado as a tow package: Ad-blue replaced with diesel secondary tank; no battery or electric motor; legal to remove the rear row of seats; Hilux GR 550 Nm 165 Nm tune motor with paddle shifts for easy control and economy. Those changes would give it better carrying than a similar GLX LC300 ... and incidentally the Prados all carry 110 litres of fuel, same as the LC 300. The electric motor has destroyed the potential of the Prado IMO. And the best thing about the Y63 is that it will have air suspension. Just attach drop it down on its air suspension, easily attach something behind it, go back to normal mode and it will self level and no need for supplimentary add ons that cost a fortune and wreck resale values and hurt warranties. Off road, just push the button and up she will go ... a Japanese Land Rover, what could be better?

Ay Ronny A consideration regarding payload weights is whatever is being towed, at least 10% of that weight lands on the towball and therefore contributes to reducing the available payload. So, if towing a 3t van there’s an extra (at least) 300kgs added to the vehicle weight.

I have had one moment where my trailer was behaving a bit sketchy, but that was on account myself doing a bad job at loading it, and the weight was way too far back, but there were three 750kg prefab concrete slabs on my trailer so I couldnt just move them forward a few centimeters.

Since my previous car for towing was a Disco 4, which also pulls 3.5 ton but is a lot less forgiving due to its lower tongue weight rating (350kg vs 150kg)

The reason the payload is so low on the RAM is Australian license laws. In the US, the GVM and GVCM is way higher. In Australia, you need a truck license to drive them loaded up. Some people convert them to truck rego and get way more use out of them, but not many people have that license.

The pay load is not marked down in Australia all the American 150 size trucks have a low pay load that is why there are gvm upgrades available. The 250 class is certainly marked down to fit to the Australian ADR and licensing.

The term “fit for purpose” is a term used in fleet management. That term covers a range of requirements and also includes “whole of life costs” and “oppertunity cost” ie forgoing one oppertunity for another. So fuel economy maybe higher on your list than towing capacity. Or say 2 fuel tanks at90 litres each for overlanding rather than 80litres and jerry cans…
@colinross62593 ай бұрын
Mention payload and towing. Didn't mention ball weight which is included in payload. 80kg up to 250kg + on big vans. Also a GVM upgrade, if car is then loaded to that GVM, cuts down your tow weight unless you get a GCM upgrade which is very difficult post rego. Two big factors in a tow vehicle you "forgot" to mention.

If we are only putting these 6 on the table for my own choices, then I would only pick two. The two I would choose is the Y63 Patrol and the Grenadier. Why those two? Well let's start with the Patrol. Here in the states we do not call it a Patrol, but instead the Armada. I can tell you that it is a straight out Luxury Vehicle that can haul a family around town and on long trips as needed. Also here in the States(who knows about Down Under) it is being equipped with the VR Series Engine which was introduced in the Nissan GTR. It is a powerhouse with great reliability based off the VQ Series Engine. Of course you still need to do the maintenance or it will fail(and that applies to any vehicle you have). That said I would not bother taking it OffRoad. It tells me that it doesn't belong there. As for the Ineos Grenadier, I would have fun with that as a Tourer. I'm pretty sure anyone here would enjoy that simply for the classic look and the way it was designed. The review you have given so far makes that pretty cool to understand, but I'm not going out and buying one as I do enjoy my 2012 D40 Frontier. Why not a Ram? Because I have seen how much they are truly not worth. They are absolute garbage. Why not a Toyota? I have way too many reasons here, but let's just go off of the good old Toyota Tax!! Way too many individuals think I should over pay for something that does not get that great of fuel range(at least in the states) and definitely doesn't have the power. Also let's face it...... You pay how much for a 70 Series and get how much? I can't justify the price. It just doesn't make sense.

Why would you want a manual transmission in a American truck? The 10 speed auto is great and leave a manual well behind.

Hope you have chance to sometime review also some Chinese offroads as Bao 5, Tank 300-400, U8 etc. many of them are hybrids with 600+ hp and range over 1000km, so would be interesting to hear perspectives from somebody that has lot of real life off-road experience!

You can get a ram certified as a light truck and up the gvm and gcm with a truck license
@wayfoxley-connolly9353 ай бұрын
Ronny I’m no expert but i believe the price you quoted for RAM is not correct, the picture you showed was a DS model which sold for 110 to 115k and the new model DT sells for around 120 to 150k

I thought the new Prado 250 has a 110 litre fuel tank. If so it would significantly alter the range ranking (currently own a 2023 Prado with dual tanks)
@petero13 ай бұрын
it does. Ronny got this one wrong.
@Car-crazy3 ай бұрын
@petero1 Actually it doesn't it actually only has an 80L fuel tank. I checked on Toyota's website here in Japan.

@@Car-crazy I have specs issued by Toyota Australia to my dealer. It lists 110l between two tanks, just like the 300 series. It better be right since I am committed 🙂
@Car-crazy3 ай бұрын
@@petero1 seems like the tank size is different for different countries. Seems a bit strange that, but maybe due to Australia being so big, they put a bigger fuel tank I suppose.

where did you get 16.5lt/100 on the y63? seeing as they said was 100lt tank on launch. and y62 avg is 15.5lt/100 and y63 being 23% more economical? Just ofr some facts, 5 years of my latest y63 TiL my overall avg is 14.2lt/100. offroading, towing 3t boat, town driving and a few 5k km highway trips.

What was the yellow container on the Grenadire? Was it a fuel tank? If so, where did you get it from??? TIA.

Love my Grenadier! Fits all the requirements of modern family life, touring, and off-road 🤙

My input, the 70 series may be rated to carry that payload but put that weight in it and the arse is on the ground & the front axle as light as. Handling would be atroustious, bad enough unladen. Towing 3.5 tonme is just lethal.

Which 4wd can you get in manual today?

If they bring out a hybrid 250 Prado, I'll buy one. Have owned multiple diesel 4WD's and believe the hybrid petrol system is the better option these days.
@stevezodiac5753 ай бұрын
The 250 (proper) hybrid is the one to look out for. But a few aspects will need to be checked first to confirm its capabilities and adaptability (for desired modifications).
@tim92413 ай бұрын
Problem with the hybrid is the compromised boot - battery sits under the carpet so you can’t add much weight at all. Wish they’d bolster the battery pack so we could avoid this limitation…

Hi Roni I recently changed my 3 year old Dual Cab 79 V8 for a Dual cab 79 2.8ltr. I tow a 29ft 3500Kg 5th wheeler full time around Aust. Maybe because of the goose neck tow ball connection point over the rear axles the thing tows like a DREAM even though the car is lighter than the van. can you do a segment on how much better 5th wheeler s are to tow etc.

I know you drive a 70 series, but I can't help but think safety should be rated in these as well. Especially for those with a family. I know Harry from Fire to Fork drives a Prado for a reason.

What kind of tariffs and taxes do they have on the Ram. Even converting the Australian currency to US that’s a crazy price for a Ram.

They get converted to right hand drive and imported by a third party. That always drives prices way up.

@Marks.Reviews3 ай бұрын
@BatmanRZ is correct. Like the 300 series, uses the same TNGA platform, that’s how they get the same tank size as the 300 series. Co op toyota confirms this tank amount.
