I wish I'd known about the pineapple thing before my first cruise. I wore a sporty top featuring a pineapple pattern and thought it was the cutest thing. Imagine my surprise and embarrassment when I discovered later the signal I was sending. It did explain the smiles, though...

I find it odd that pineapples have come to mean this because pineapples are symbols of the hospitality industry. You will often see pineapple pins on the lapels of hotel workers. In the past pineapples where extremely expensive and would only be served at the swankiest events leading to it being the symbol of luxury and... as I said hospitality. It is still used in the industry. So how did it get this tawdry use?
@georginabensley9453

@@tedthurgate It may kind of be related actually.... "We're hospitable! We're VERY hospitable! Come in for a visit!" (But that's probably why they prefer to do them upside down if they really want to send a signal)

@@LPAdams1001 I distinctly remember one solo that was more than obnoxious, on a cruise, the others were dodging him and were surprised I could guess who he was. As for the other venues, nope: the square dancers don’t care to do much more than dance and the movie theaters don’t leave too much time for it. Years ago, on a greyhound bus across the south, single, there was a passenger that was trying to basically assault me! Past that I travelled for my job and got quite good at setting boundaries. The one I remember most was in the secretary’s office. I’d move a couple of times and finally said, Wayne if you can’t figure out what to do with your hands, put them in your pockets! From the secretary’s expression she clearly had a similar problem. I was an expat in Indonesia. We were warned not to travel alone because many had the impression that the Hollywood movies reflected reality, at least for women. On cruises we regularly invited solos, at least for the meal, to join us etc. I’m just used to cruise atmospheres where solos feel safe and don’t put up with such nonsense.

Great information, Gary. I only recently learned about the pineapples! I vaguely knew about a bunch of these things. My state has cracked down severely on pain medications and as someone who deals with chronic pain, our first cruise, we went to the pharmacias in port and hoped to find the generic version of my pain medication. No luck. However, a few years later, we found that Canada treated my medication as OTC and I got the largest bottle I could after a pharmacist consult in Montreal.

Wow! This was a surprising video to find. I never thought you'd do a video on this topic. It was interesting ... in a voyeur sort of way. I wonder if prostitution is much of an issue on cruiseships. Maybe on land excursions ... maybe ... but you'd think probably not on cruiseships. Am I wrong? If it does exist, might be worth a video with other "questionable" activities that happen on cruises.

Prostitution is “alive and well”… more so before COVID. Back then there would be a “solo worker” in every ship I went on. In the last 2 years “they” sort of disappeared, maybe their organized group went bust (?)

I agree it was not my usual themes, but thought always worth trying and surprising :-) And this researching and checking now as very "interesting". I have been asked about the prostitution topic but never been able to find out much at all. I suspect that, as you also seem to feel, that unlikely as the vast bulk of people on cruises are couples and it would be hard to find clients I would have suspected....

18 is the age in most parts of the world. Australia, many places (but not all) in Asia, NZ , Pacific, Europe. Apart from the ME where in many places it’s banned outside of 5star hotels I can’t think apart from the USA and Caribbean where it’s 21. But I’ve just checked, there are places in the USA where it’s 18 for some alcoholic drinks.

I have been on a couple of Chumley Bear Cruises, but it was a group of 500 on a ship of 2500. Our first meet up was mandatory where everyone was told to be respectful and limit any PDA, and keep things in the privacy of your room if that was your choice. It was more of a camaraderie group. What I wanted to mention was that on each Cruise there were people who were kicked out of our group and also kicked off the ship. One guy was drunk 24/7 which got him kicked off our group. When returning to the ship in Cozumel, he flashed some crew members at the dock and was kicked off at that port. And good riddance.

Something I'll probably never get the chance to find out for myself ... if you book a suite with a hot tub on your balcony, are the ship cameras able to see if you use the tub without a swimsuit? I said something right away and the guy tried to deny it, but the white powder in the drink was spotted before it dissolved. The reaction of the bar tender was fast and extreme, and as he held the guy down the bar tender looked to me and said, "From now on, you get 1 free drink whenever I see you." Turned out the woman who had her drink spiked was the bartender's GF. She'd been drinking a coke with no alcohol. But God, it kind of scared me how quickly it went down.

As long as people are following the rules, the regular crew isn't directly exposed to anything explicit.
