I actually think I've exclusively received compliments on my more avant garde fragrances BECAUSE they stand out and are unique. So they engage the nose, there's curiosity, and then, because of politeness or because of genuine love. they engage with this uniqueness. My go to is to challenge yourself to stand out via the things that you love and make you unique. It will attract people you want to be around you.

I don't buy fragrance just to appeal to others, but yeah I do expect what I like to be pleasant to others (if that makes sense). At the end of the day, I like the scent and hope others do too but if they don't say anything (compliments) that's ok too.

I love it! My female friend gave me a decant and at the beginning i was trying to figure it out what does it smell like but it smells very unique, clean, earthy a bit soapy and very herbal but definitely it’s very sexy mysterious and elegant and in my opinion it’s more for man.

I have literally just sprayed my sample of Mousse Illuminee on my right wrist with Bon Monsieur on my left. I've doubled up with Amouage Dia Man and N&W Gravitas on the back of each hand. My favourite is Gravitas followed by Bon Monsieur, then Dia Man. I'm finding Mousse Illuminee a bit more challenging - I can really appreciate it but it's overtly green and bitter to my nose, perhaps from the moss note. I might grow to love it after a few wearings....
@ciganyweaverandherperiwink62932 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandy, I'm curious which Mousse Illuminee you sprayed: is it the new formulation in the black box or the old 'original' classic? Something hearbreakingly awful has happened to Mousse Illuminee (which I adored with a genuine loyalty and with great passion-- a masterpiece). The latest version is flat, bitter, green...like dry white wine mixed with something sad and dull. It's been flattened down and had all the dimension punched out of it. I'm not sure what's going on with this fragrance but I fear the version I revered is gone forever. There is no dupe for the original Mousse Illuminee. It had a wonderful juicy menthol-pine forest-spearmint sweetness that was so invigorating and lively; it just whooshed through the nose like a lemonade version of Vicks Vaporub, haa! All that sweet juicy menthol-mint is gone. No pine forest. I'm so upset about it and worry about how my urgent constructive criticism/line of genuine, respectful questioning will be recieved by Manuel. I don't want him to hear only a whinging complaint when what I'm really offering up to him is the most enormous of compliments. I feel this way about very few fragrances. Any changes to raw material suppliers are a make or break, knife's edge deal for me. I can spot all the changes and it's a minor devastation. The genius is so finely calibrated so any unfortunate supply issues are a total scorched Earth policy kind of deal. I'll never buy it again if it cannot remain gloriously consistent. What do you think?

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 I'm quite sure, given your description, that I have the newer formulation. It does settle down after an hour or so but I much prefer Bon Monsieur. I was also impressed by Chypre Siam. Do you own any others from Rogue?

@ciganyweaverandherperiwink62932 жыл бұрын
@@sandymcconnell1969 I've had decants of Chypre Siam (which is a little too barbershop-animalic for my taste) and Derviche, which may well have been my next purchase but now I've got ice cold feet regarding Rogue Perfumery: what will I actually end up with when I buy the full bottle, y'know? I wanted to try the entire range because Manuel's a fantastic perfumer, there's no-one like him. But if I can be blunt here, my assessment is that if Rogue cannot remain consistent in their production then I'm going to avoid them entirely from now on. I'm so put off by the Mousse Illuminee situation. What's the point in creating a work of genius, one with richly detailed dimensions that are in glorious defiance of IFRA's nuisance regulations...what's the point in beautifully executing such a nuanced, gorgeously judged blend with stunning ingredients, a work of genius which I recognise as such and adore, only to go and warp and deform it into an entirely foreign imposter, a lame imitator and think nobody will notice or care and that it smells 'pretty much the same'? It DOESN'T. I'm genuinely crushed when I contemplate Rogue. I'd happily double the purchase price if it meant Mr Cross could get a hold of the exact same raw ingredients he used to use. Same goes for Fort & Manle. I looooove 'Mr Bojnokoff's Purple Hat', but look at the brand website: it's empty. No distributors have any stock and the brand's own website hasn't even the courtesy of printing an online store/brand update if in fact they're temporarily halting production for one reason or another. It's very off-putting. It's one thing that is an infuriating kind of gamble in the nich fragrance world: consistency and issues with raw ingredient suppliers. The slightest tweak makes AN ENORMOUS different. It destroys what I love entirely. Details matter. Good luck ordering from them in the future and I hope you do well rather than become disappointed, sincerely.

Justin. Have you tried ajmal black onyx? Its a parfum, its very masculine and has that "soap" smell, i guess. Its like a thick more masculine version of green irish tweed. Took me a few days to suddenly say i smell the tweed, but its somewhat similar if you think about it when smelling it. still much different. I just got it a few days ago and im wearing it alot. Also try Ajmal Cento.. Both very different than usual frags, both odd a little. Havent even had a chance to get compliments but i already know theyl get some. Dont compare them to Dior or something lol. These are just amazing money savers and worth a mention.

Angels Share is my most complimented scent in the past year. I don't get any compliments, but when I put Angels Share on, there's something special about it. It's funny cause Oajan has gotten way more wear from me, but it never gets compliments for me. Edit: And just to highlight, Angels Share isn't an odd compliment getter. It's the fact that similar scents, lets say I rocked Oajan or Enigma or even Naxos, don't get me that attention.

This is really fascinating. I'd love to know what tiny tweak in the formula differentiates it so that it's capable of generating such enormously postive, unsolicited complimentary reaction and leaving all the 'twin fragrances' in the dust with the soundtrack of crickets. The fact that you even noticed all the stuff you wrote in your 'comment report' above means you are very observant, analytical and close to scientific despite the casual, conversational delivery. I'd love to know what you do for a living, :D. Comment more!

The moment you start wearing perfumes for compliments then go for designer frags. Niche rarely get you compliments. Leave niche to those who wear frags for the art not for compliments. It's good to smell nice around people but let be your choice. Thanks. Most Indies are also not for the mass market. Thanks for bringing these indie houses to the limelight.

Exactly, usually the ladies like the basic designer scents like Montblanc, Bleu de Chanel, 1 Million etc....just simple and synthetic frags that are majority of the time designer frags. They just need it to smell good and that's really easy to find with popular designer frags! 🤷♂️🤷♂️

I think that's part of the thrill wearing niche fragrances and wondering how people will react if they ever catch a whiff. Some are just challenging, abstract and far too foreign and unfamilar in profile (or too rich in certain key ingredients like, say, oud which you are either familar with and love, or you don't). But...BUT...sometimes something unbelievably odd and magical is presented and people just cannot stop sniffing this moreish new alien fragrance. For example, if you want a mixture of leather and rose that is DELICIOUS on a man, you can't beat La Cloiserie de Parfum's 'Oud Baie Rose'. Extremely wearable, just familiar enough for the common set of nostrils, yet blatantly niche. I want to eat my own arm when I wear it-- never mind when a man wears it. Oh my god, whew. When my husband wears 'Memories' by The Gate he smells like a cola-cherry Chupa Chup. Not cough syrup. No, think of the candy mixed with a thick fog of Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille swirled with black cherry compote. Another blatantly niche fragrance but so unbelievably moreish and addictive as a 'weirdo gourmand'. You just never know what will hypnotise a total stranger and make them want to lick your collarbones. It's a predatory thrill but also a service to womankind I'd say, trying to figure out exactly which moreish niche is just 'foreign enough' in the right way to magnetise them . :D Absolute Aphrodisiac is a good one. Niche, but again, I'd guess that most chicks would go mad for it on a guy.

Hi Justin! This video reminded me of a particularly unpleasant back'n'forth I had with a certain young, VERY 'rough around the edges' frag comm content creator. I don't mind crude and coase language but articulation, maturity and wit has to come with it; I gave her and her channel a fair shake but I find her intensely unappealing as a character due to her hubristic immaturity and vulgar style of expression. She's rude to people in her comment sections too, misunderstanding so many people and insulting them snidely. It's painful to behold but at least I know it's not personal... Anyhow, I left her a comment humorously sharing my infuriating tendency to inspire compliments on my fragrance only when I'm wearing something I don't really like myself, just a basic sample I'm using up. The more complex masterpieces in my collection inspire NOTHING from people. How cruelly disappointing, ha! She announced with great hauteur and finality that the reason only the most basic fragrances in my collection generate unsolicited compliments from strangers is because most people like very simple scent profiles. I agreed with her to an extent. All my attempts to intelligently explore the depth and nuance of the topic was rudely shut down with what she thought was the ultimate explanation of aesthetic clashes. What I would very much have liked to explore (with a so-called lover of fragrance, keep in mind) is the psychology behind marketing and how that influences people's reactions or perception of a fragrance on offer. For example: If a man walks in wearing an elegant, commanding vintage fragrance people may instantly glance over and give him an appraising top-to-toe once, thinking, 'WOW, he smells incredibly elegant! How chic'. BUT if a 17 year old school GIRL in a pink velour tracksuit walks around a supermarket wearing an ultra 'masculine' vintage classic suddenly people are unable to react to the EXACT SAME fragrance the same way. The visual context of the presentation has jammed their perception and ability to access the fragrance on its own merits. This phenomenon is rarely addressed in 'frag comm'. I'm fascinated by psychological engineering, fashion trend contagion and all that stuff. So in the teenage girl's case, strangers most likely will NOT go 'wow, she smells terrific...what is that, how chic!' Instead their noses will wrinkle and they'll likely guess that she stole her dad's aftershave and her phenolic, woody aromatic, old school leather will confuse people due to how humans have been conditioned to create context for, and understanding of, fragrances due to historic associations, marketing and social conditioning. So the aforementioned young KZbinr appeared to not have the slightest idea what I was suggesting or wanting to explore, she outright shut me down and felt she was the be all and end all when it comes to understanding the sense of smell and modern beauty industry marketing (and evolutionary biology when you think further, right?) Anyhow, not everybody is as deep thinking and curious a person. I'm disappointed by superficial so-called fragrance lovers who are so drippy and dull in their alleged area of great passion and interest. I'm praying YOU know what quirks regarding presentation and context I'm talking about here. Do people really smell fragrance without having their judgement clouded in carefully engineered ways? It's all about who is wearing what and where they're wearing it. It's NOT just to do with simple, easy fragrance profile whatsoever, I diverge on this point; it's the sensory mystery that is the sudden proposal of an unexpected scent profile on an unexpected person in an unexpected place. It's not processed on a fair, even playing field. Scent and fragrance are easily manipulated in our perception, depending on culture and connotations. So all I wanted to say is that we're not in full control, even of our own tastes and the topic explored in this video (hopefully attracting positive reactions and freely offered compliments). So many naiive, superficial, heartbreakingly suggestible, gullible and entirely non-intellectual consumers are out there believing they have full control of their own sense of aesthetics and values, no even remotely curious to dig a little deeper. That's why so many of your videos are fascinating to the more mature, thoughtful viewers out here; there's much more about your thinking that informs what to the naked eye may seem like glib and superficial video themes. They're NOT always as simple as they may seem at first glance. "Compliment getting" is a serious business! Fascinating too. Thank you for indulging me and reading this slab of text. Just wanted to offer feedback on the topics you make videos about. :)
