@Zatoichi444 I think its more of a right of passage for Shogo to go through. Its a special time and deserves the respect for his choice in Katana.
@pdj2975
@pdj2975 Жыл бұрын
@Zatoichi444 if he could only afford a 200 dollar katana he wouldn't be there, you would not get a katana in japan thats sharp for that, even his blunt training sword is 600usd to have a katana in japan it has to follow stringent rules, and a 200$ 1060 katana does not have a registration card, and is not considered a katana and therefor just a weapon, making it illegal in japan
@pdj2975
@pdj2975 Жыл бұрын
@Zatoichi444 yeah but in japan unfortunately you need to pay that kind to get an iaido worth using i think, around $500 usd? theres a question for shogo, how do the Japanese govt view unsharpened iaido, can you import thoes as they are unsharpened?

The price of katana in Japan always astounds me. I'd love to go and see how different they actually are from the ones Ive bought myself, since I actually have a tachi from Yomikuni and a shirasaya from Ronin Katana, and these little 500 usd swords already feel so nice. I couldnt even begin to imagine what a one million yen (7.3k usd) katana would feel like
@ricardososa7534
@ricardososa7534 2 жыл бұрын
The prices are somewhat inflated since Katana Swordsmiths in Japan can only make like 3 blades a year due to a Japanese Law

They're expensive because smiths are only allowed to make 3 a month by law and there are probably traditional method requirements which makes it time consuming to make.
@piotrmalewski8178
@piotrmalewski8178 2 жыл бұрын
Thing is, in Japan a katana is supposed to be made using traditional methods, and from Tamahagane steel that was obsolete already back in the days, and only used in Japan, because Japan was isolated and well... backward. You can have a cheaper and better sword these days, made from modern steel, using modern methods. Also, the reason why japanese Katana is so heavy on tradition these days, is because after WWII the US wanted to destroy all Japanese swords, because they had a trauma over Shin Gunto and couldn't tell the difference between Shin Gunto and Katana, but Japanese managed to convince them that these are different things, and the US agreed that Japan can keep their swords, granted that they would be only those 'ancient' obsolete Katanas, rather than mass produced blades.
@victoriazero8869
@victoriazero8869 2 жыл бұрын
Tamahagane is a limited resources on purpose, very expensive, and HAD to be processed with inefficient traditional method which consumes a lot of fuel instead of cheap electricity. And this was just to create the sword billet, before accounting to days upon days of hand forging by hammer and yes, traditional furnace which consume a lot of fuel and man hours. Authentic Katana is less a weapon and more a rigidly made piece of religious art, and should be treated as such. They're also registered in local government. Katana outside Japan is made of modern steel, either machine-assisted or outright machine-forged which push the cost low while also making a better blade, but there's no significant cultural value in them. And in Japan, those blades would be illegal.

Watching this makes me even more excited for my Katana to get here!! I still have to wait another 3 weeks or so for the export permit from Japan and then shipping 😩 I went with an older one; early Edo(Kanbun) since I do not currently practice said martial arts (yet) though I have been training in others Man what an exhilarating feeling it was finalizing that purchase!! Everyday I’ve been counting down till I hear about the permit and shipping confirmation!😇😇

hello Congratulation on your sword. Coming from HEMA i really like that you are taking both ken-jutsu and cutting, From me cutting is invaluable to inform you technique be it chop, slash, chop-slice or slice. If you have the occassion and an expendbale blade (ie monsteel modern balde made after an historical model in therm of lenght, sori, width and thickness.) it is worth trying to to cut through cloth and cloth armour level. Not sure if cloth armour was as extensively used in medieval japan as it was in medieval europe but it is worth see how much a slak layer of quality denin changes the power you need in you cut (or how the same denin taunt on the target makes virtually no difference).

We chose the same one. The Dark leather Tsuka Ito looks rugged. The handle is to short for my use. The handles or kashira goes down to your funny bone with a bent wrist. And standing normal the tip of the Kisake is 1/2" off the ground. Thought you might like to know this style called: Yanagi Ryu, Its from southern most part of Japan. It was fun watching you have fun. :-)

Was waiting for this video for so long...what an amazing experience to purchase a Katana this way. Unfortunately I'm in the UK so I had little choice but to chance an online purchase - what was interesting is the person who designed the blade said its so light because of the geometry of the blade - meaning the the bulk of the weight is centred as close to the tsuba as possible, so was interesting to hear you confirm this 😀

Probably late, but congratulations again for the 1st ever Katana! I was looking forward to this from the last Journey for Katana video, and I didn't know it was uploaded last August. Will also be checking for the newer video. Thank you again for these. I am not sure if this was already discussed in your channel but I saw some documentary before that swordsmiths have been declining and hopefully won't be gone soon due to the younger generations not opting to continue if they're from a family of swordsmiths or there aren't many who actually do apprenticeship due to the modern age, preferring probably careers to fund their daily lives first and the demands of the society.

Yes, I also absolutely loved that second katana the moment I saw him! But I thought “Oh, maybe there is something even better down the line.” And I really love the way you described the best katana. “You’re allowed to become a part of him, and he accepts you”. Truly, truly poetic :) Hope that one day you become worthy of a historied katana ^_^ And, um, this may seem goofy, but are you planning to give your partner a name? ^_^ Also yes, do come back for the wakizashi, he wants to become a partner too ^_^ Hope that he waits for you when you’re ready :) I also had a similar experience with buying hand-made dolls. Sometimes they wait for you, sometimes *they* choose *you*.

I have no koshirie for it, except that it has a very nice tsuba in the form of a gibbon and a single military pattern sepa. It belonged to a soldier called Mitsubishi, who lived in Castle Street, Niigata, in Japan.
