Something I'm thinking of, with yours and Kazu's comments on how heavy the armor is, is that the samurai would train to be able to handle that kind of weight regularly, in addition to the obvious need to train kenjutsu. It just seems like it would make sense, since the cumbrance would be a weakness in battle, so they would train to be able to handle it, and move about normally enough, when wearing it, to at least mitigate what could easily get them killed.

How long has this Dojo been in business? It is right next to the "M4" Airsoft Bar, (Tiny indoor BB gun shooting range) which I have been to. Another great video that makes me want to go back to Japan again, even if only to try to visit this place. I think both sets of Armour are a work of art. The evolution and development of Japanese armour is something I do like to study but I am not an expert in it. Kazu was wearing what I believe to be a reproduction of a style that might be from the 14-15th century, it has lots of lacing and very large sode. In the Sengoku period the sode become smaller and more rounded, and small kozane scales of armour covered with lace were replaced by large plates joined together with significantly fewer laces. But in the Edo period there was a return to the older styles as the relative peace of the period changed the armour from a practical, campaign and war fighting aspect to that of displaying wealth and artistic flair.

I noticed that after Shogo explained that the commonly taught thumb position was less than ideal for drawing the sword, it was explained that it was also "less ideal" for *somebody else* to draw your sword and cut you with it. Great use of beginner's mind to go elsewhere and learn why the thumb is used like that.

Armor isn't everyday stuff and even in ancient times, commoners would wear what was appropriate. We can't lose mobility just to look cooler. Mobility is important. Even with equipment deployed to the military, mobility and comfort is usually top priority.
