A good video , Thank you . 6 months retired in Cuenca . Studied the culture for two years before coming. ( via youtube ) Twice I have lost my temper in frustration. Both times came back and apologized for my over reaction . I am out and about everyday in Cuenca .And could have filled up 6 notebooks . On how well I'm treated here . Muchas gracias Ecuador for bending over backwards so many times . To make me feel welcome here.

Awesome that you came back to apologize for the over reaction. I've no doubt that was appreciated. Many wouldn't out of shame or some other fear. Thanks for sharing David.

I knew I liked you, but when I saw you hugging the tree I decided that I loved you. 😘 Gratitude makes all the difference. It's all in how we frame our thoughts.

Ohhh thanks Sally! We love you too. Framing and expectation setting tend to go a long way in our daily lives here.

As a retiree I do feel grateful than I can live here so well on my social security. I wonder if I am exploiting the relative poverty here as compared to the US. I also feel guilty that I am driving up the cost of living for poorer working people. Given that, I am surprised we are not greeted with more hostility, such as that experienced by Ecuadoran immigrants in the US.

Great that you even spend time acknowledging your potential impact, John. Many don't have that level of awareness. I suspect some hostility is much harder for us to pick up as locals don't tend to be as direct.

Super topic and so important to keep the relationships between different peoples healthy and happy in Ecuador. We are not nearly as appreciative as we should be. See you someday in Ecuador, maybe this year!

Thanks Debra. It is a topic that can be easy to forget amongst the hustle and bustle of modernity. By all means, feel free to say hello if you find yourself in Cuenca.

A vendor day would not take pennies, 25 cents. I'm a regular customer. I'll never go back. Why would you not want pennies for change?

Hard to say. But, I've also had several cab drivers try to reject payment when I've used $2 notes. Not everyone considers them to be good fortune apparently. Rolling with these types of small but confusing issues is second nature now.
