I live in Brazil and dress like in the 1940s. Once a 90-something year woman wished me "good day" in the street, and I paid no attention until I learned that it was a tradition until the early 1950s for a woman to always compliment a man with a hat. I felt probably like you did when that old man said that you looked smart.

At the airport last week, a ticketing agent was convinced I was on my way to get married simply because I wore a navy blazer, khaki trousers, penny loafers, and a necktie. He could not fathom that there might be any other reason a man would ever dress well. He did offer a compliment however by the time we finished.

I remember wearing a pretty basic charcoal grey business suit with a shirt and tie to an evening event and I was at the bar buying a dram of whisky. I spoke to a man who I recognised as a politician in my country (former cabinet minister) and we had a few words about single malts. He suddenly stopped mid conversation and asked "Sorry, who are you?" - Not in a demeaning way, just that he assumed I must be a "somebody" who moves in similar circles to himself. In truth I wasn't! I felt like Steven Segal in that film Under Siege - "I'm just a cook... just a lowly, lowly cook"

This video is 100% accurate. I always dress well formally or casually I like my linens and chambrays in the summer and my tweeds and wools in the winter and no matter where I go I always feel confident and people have been positive towards me I get better services, etc. UT really has changed my life and I'm an athletic fit man but chose to dress sartorially so yes very accurate video sir!

Yes, extremely casual is everywhere. I got a few compliments lately from men and women who noticed that my casual outfits were well thought out, interesting and with a color combination that looked very good to their eyes. Kind of a confidence booster as I have been "upping my game lately". Being well dressed will get a guy noticed by men and women who see and appreciate any effort whatsoever. It does not not necessarily require a suit and tie in your local neighborhoods to become appreciated for looking well put together. Thank you for your videos and inspiration.

I’m in the USA - which I blush to disclose since my country is apparently the source of the current “fashion” trend - and I find that a good rule of thumb is to figure out what other men will wear and then dress one notch above. If others wear sneakers, go for loafers or chukkas. If others wear t-shirts, wear a open necked dress shirt. If others wear short jackets, go for a blazer. And so forth. The point is to make your sense of style work on others subliminally, without looking out of place. As regards jewelry, wear stuff that’s high quality, but not so flashy that it makes you look like a pimp. And it must be stressed - it doesn’t matter that much what style of haircut you have, but it has to be a style that suits your face, social circumstances and personality. Find a good barber and stick with him. It’s worth spending a bit extra for a haircut that lasts for a month or so. And btw, I wish I had the guts to wear a tie like that.

Your doing the right things and keep doing it. Something to keep in mind and realize, the vast majority of people and outside the Sartorially inclined do not know how to dress, dress properly nor have good examples around them in someone to emulate as a good dresser nor to ask questions of advice so they themselves can be helped. It don’t matter if the person is senoir in authority or older, they may not know how to dress period and was somehow never thought how. Be the example or that shining star of an example to follow and emulate in your surrounding.

I can absolutely confirm the compliments bit. I usually get several compliments a day, and as obnoxious and narcissistic as it sounds, it's become somewhat of a nuisance. There does come a point where you recieve too many of the same compliments! On top of that, in a world where a shirt with buttons is dandified, being called well-dressed isn't all that special. It's like being complimented on brushing your teeth. I've come to appreciate well-meaning and creative roasts far more, or at least a compliment on something specific rather than vague. I will, however, always feel flattered at being called a dandy. It may even be meant as a dig, but the dandy is the highest honor which I feel can be bestowed on me.

As someone who lives in the U.S. and just often observe how people react and find perspective in it all I can try to offer a different perspective maybe. Many people don’t often know how to give a proper complement to a stranger. They can often chat among themselves on whatever issue, but to offer someone a genuine complement they are often reduced in not often knowing how to respond, what to say or offer a critical or meaningful response that isn’t at best “generic”. So they may say, you look nice, WoW nice outfit, or whatever the British equivalent may say. People know a person looks nice or what about them looks nice, but they can’t often articulate a good meaningful response. In knowing that myself, I don’t find it bothersome or take any offense to what they may say. It’s tough for even many a people just to open their mouth and give anyone a compliment. It then takes much more effort to be crafty in articulating to say something complimentary meaningful. Hey, I really like the way your dressed, it’s sharp and stylish and especially like that jacket you have on I like it myself. Few to almost no one will give a meaningful comment to a random stranger, but that’s a meaningful comment. Far better than just saying, you look nice. Now if your a bit more Sartorial yourself and you see someone else in your vicinity looking and dressing well, I would think your far better a person to offer a meaningful compliment to that stranger because you yourself understand the effort it takes for them to dress well. In doing so you may also meet someone interesting as well with both persons having something in common. But try not to take it in a negative way when most people can’t articulate a better response than you look dandy. I guess for me, I just find it all amusing.

@@ardentdfender4116 I should specify that I don't take offense to it. I'd have to be a right jerk to take offense to someone giving me a heartfelt compliment. I find it annoying at times, but never offensive. I think the more frustrating thing is, "What's the occasion?" It's just a bit sad that we live in a world where the idea of someone dressing nicely because they want to rather than because they have to is an alien concept. I don't consider what I do all that spectacular - the average 1930s upper-class gentleman was probably better-dressed than I. I don't think I need so much commendment for just tying my own tie, folding my own pocket square, and wearing a suit that hopefully fits. Despite my British lingo, I too am American. I just find some British swears, wardrobe terms, and class terms (like "common" or "posh") to be more to my liking than American ones.

@@themoderndandy713 Apprreciate the response man. The way i made the comment was more to simply chime in and offer and share my perspective of why people repeat the same things when they say anything in attempting to offer a compliment making it all sound and seem the same. As well why people can't ever give a non generic seeming complement and thus all sound like everyone else. Thus just agreeing and saying don't take it personal that many people all sound the same. I know any comment and feedback is appreciated because its just easy for someone to just say nothing. But in having some perspective as to why everyone says the same broken record thing, well thats the perspective i tried to give.

From my point of view dressing well is much like the French saying ' Bien parler, c'est se respecter' , in other words speaking well is to respect one's self which I believe applies to dressing well . It's a little bit of self love instead of following the crowd indiscriminately. Well done Mr. Ash, you're speaking to the converted , in fact I never had to be converted and am only more committed to the cause!

Well said. Even just wearing mirror shined shoes or boots has an effect, leads to comments and compliments. I think that includes being at home. Why should my wife be confronted every day with me in a T-shirt and sweat pants? In my working days I was known as the guy who wore good quality braces, smart and well designed. I was paid attention to, my opinion was sought out, I was respected.

Funny thing is, while athleasure is physically comfortable I don’t feel very comfortable in it unless I’m actually exercising. A button down, chinos and topped by a well shaped fedora feels much more of my own skin as it were, and certainly helps me get in the mindset of actually going about my day.

I’m in the U.S. I like to just dress well as it’s a reflection of myself. I however don’t try to out dress the room or at the office where I work. It just isn’t my intention at all. But the simple fact is many people have gotten so non effort in their style of what they wear like they just rolled out of bed or picked up their cloth off the floor it makes what I wear with intention looks like I’m trying to out dress everyone when that isn’t even the case.

I do enjoy watching your videos on Saturday morning. Might I come at this from a slightly different angle: Over the last six or seven years, I have been going through a sartorial transformation. I used to wear jeans tees and trainers as a daily chores and mundane life stuff. For work (as a classroom teacher) I'd wear maybe a shirt with chinos and a brogue. Note - the minimal use of 'work appropriate' dress; otherwise, wear throw on comfort in all other non-work scenarios. So, to the point. I now wear mainly sports jacket, quality shoes, long sleeve shirt, and, when at work, a tie. I have five suits too, which I do wear but not daily. I seek out double breasted jackets with a wider lapel. I look for quality fabric (a lot from vintage shops or online). I get a lot of attention as I walk down the street and many compliments at work on my attire. It is my expression of non-conformity. Conversely, I am wearing a tie and it's a marker of someone who is outside of the norm. Extrapolating further, it's 'punk' to wear a vintage wool or silk tie in work or to a shopping trip at the Co-op - who else does such a thing?! I will say, I don't mind what other people wear as I focus on my expressions through my clothes (my Superpower?). We are entering a phase where comfort (or perceived comfort) is the only real consideration when buying clothes. It may be that, 'fashion' and sartorial movements move through cyclical trends, the jacket, tie and leather shoes may become briefly 'fashionable' on a cat walk. But, as long as there are small groups of people seeking to capture the essence of classic menswear (and womenswear and the other genders?), we will always have the well dressed. End

You have nailed the concept perfectly. The ever-casual world actually plays into the hands of the intentionally well dressed man. As more men choose to wear their bed attire into the street, us, sartorial gentlemen feel our powers growing ever stronger. A tie is now the preserve of prime ministers, presidents and royalty - and of course, the intentionally well dressed man, who commands ever more respect as we stride confidently through life looking ever-better!

Years ago, I bought an online single breasted pinstriped suit, the fit of which very pleasantly surprised me since they were the measurements I took and sent in myself. It was the first time I bought a suit that way. I wore it going into the city and while I was in a pub, a young woman looked back over her shoulder at me and was so transfixed on me that she bumped into the door as she was leaving. Another time, I was wearing a grey double breasted suit I got off eBay and a young guy called me Sir when he said sorry for not looking where he was going and almost bumped into me. He didn’t look as if he usually called men Sir. As for the navy blue blazer, I miss the blazer I used to have. I grew too big for it. Trouble is, I lost the weight and am back to a 32” waist from the 36” and counting waist I had when the blazer went to the charity shop along with some trousers that “shrunk” too. It didn’t occur to me to keep it incase it fitted me again. Someone got a nice Ralph Lauren blazer in the charity shop, very similar to the blazer you have on in this video. My favourite kind of compliment is what I call the silent compliment from ladies where the wide eyed expression is unmistakable.

You know, I'm a portly man, and people used to say I was fat, on my face. My mother asked me to start wearing more formal dresses, and as luck would have it, I found employment in another town where people have never seen me wearing T-shirts and shorts. I've made it a point to always dress up in a budget but tailor made suit, neck tie and a pocket square, whenever anyone outside of my own family sees me - that's the only look they must know of me. I've started to meet people who say I'm good looking, some say I am built like Merv Hughes (the Australian fast bowler) and my mother says, a suit covers up the stomach area like no other item of clothing does. She has asked me to keep it to rather inexpensive 2 piece suits as I work on my weight, and then once I'm slimmer, go all out and purchase good three piece suits. At the workplace, I can see that I'm heard more readily and with respect. I've also consciously decided to speak less. My manager is a man of sartorial elegance, he silently appreciates it. I saw it in his smile the first time, and I remember him glancing at my shoes when he thought I wasn't looking. The policemen are friendlier too, when I ask for directions (they traffic policemen are the best guides to a place, if you're a polite stranger). Superb content, Ash. I can't say there are downsides to it,

This specific vid among all the other vids has a particular superpower and it’s core message needs reinforcing every few months periodically. This vid speaks to the consciousness inside the man, the man within as he may waffle in his decision of being a well dressed man or just to improve himself in his presentations little by little. It speaks to the change a person should try to make and why you should, with the examples from real like situation to weave the tale of the message being told. That’s a message that needs constant retelling but just told differently and evolving in how the core message is told every time adding some things new. But the core message needs to be continuously told periodically! Even I myself who has been on a sartorial style improvement change for years, still need these specific vid message in reinforcement speaking to the self within that I am doing the right things reinforced with the experience of others. If I find appreciation in the core message of a video like this, what to the new person that’s just starting their style improvement journey. In conclusion I can also say because I dress well and often the best dressed guy wherever I go that I notice people heads turn, often women and I out dress them too. Some give complements that WoW you look really nice, stylish they would say. So I hear that too if even said differently based on the situation.

I think there's a flip-side to dressing in a way that strongly stands out from the crowd, Ash. In some circumstances it could unfortunately also make you a target for muggers :-0 As for casual attire...that's actually a fascinating topic. I believe that there actually _are_ things which distinguish an über-wealthy person and a 'regular Joe' in this context - but it comes down to rather subtle things which might not be apparent at the first glance or from 50 paces away. (Just one example: maybe Bill Gates is wearing expensive suede boots at weekends instead of cr+ppy trainers...ya know...)

Hi, Ash. I'm a university student who is 19 years old. Recently, I've been making an effort to dress well before going to campus, and I've gotten a lot of compliments from my friends so far. However, I hesitate to wear formal clothing such as formal dress shirts since I'm afraid of looking like an office guy having to wear them. When the weather is hot, I generally wear a polo shirt, a pair of summer dress pants, and a pair of brogue shoes. Yet, I will have to wear a shirt, a sweater, and a sport coat/blazer in the fall or winter. So, could you please make a video for the young men who not only would like to be well-dressed but also be attractive?
@karlj1564

Think of being fully dressed rather than formally dressed. A flat cap can be linen in the summer, and tweed in the winter. A jacket can be less structured, I use unstructured, unlined linen jackets in warm countries or in summer. Even an overshirt or "shacket" over your shirt or t-shirt can make you look well dressed without being overdressed. Ties come in different textures, experiment with different less formal ties. My leisure ties have some texture and I'd where one out to lunch etc. A button down collar shirt is easy to dress up or down, with or without a tie.

But learning what you can wear in fabric at the various seasons at school helps a lot in knowing how you can wear or layer your cloth in a great dress style. Linen based cloth works better when it’s warmer as well cotton and more affordable for a college student. Wool much better in Winter for colder climate. But work within your budget.

I would say: Jugde a book by it's cover, but be open for (pleasant or unpleasant) surprises. And make sure that your own appearance communicates the way you want to be seen.

One item of clothing I will never buy is a "dress shirt" with a button down collar, IMHO that is just so wrong. That's my opinion, others may differ.

Ah... the kind of things that have been happening to me ever since I started dressing properly ;). The first two things are also ONE of the reasons I dress up - professionalism is suggested by dress and I'm a bespoke orthopaedic cobbler... not the primary reason mind you - *this* is probably based on me being a somewhat vain bloke. -_-; Number three is a side effect... I like it, but by now it's more of an effect that I'm used to and I don't do it to achieve this (in spite of the just mentioned vain tendencies ;) ). Mind you I'm working in Offenbach, right next to Frankfurt, you know, the city with the ECB, but it's a traditionally poor relation to Frankfurt, used to be more proletarian but by now is more just poorer and more importantly, more antisocial really, but I, strangely enough really because I don't expected this, have the effect of drawing people who I've been encountering regularly since I started in this job a long while back along with me in dressing a bit more dapper instead of just getting everyone, pardon me, pissed^^. And yes... I *do* look *considerably* better dressed up than dressed down.^^ People *especially* seem to love my hats... ;) - I really need to get you some "Am I a Chap?" photos ;). Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Certainly, when working in the yard or hacking through the forest. Make sure you have the British made variant of DM. The quality difference is marked.

@@TheChapsGuide that’s great thanks Ash, so you don’t think you could wear them with a casual blazer jacket and jeans type of look ?

I’ll take a stab at answering this since I myself owns 3 pairs of Docs and have worn them for 30 years at this point since I first started to when I was in the U.S, military stationed in Japan where people there love Docs. Now I also have many leather dress shoes and it’s what I normally wear being well dressed. I wouldn’t wear ALL Docs or just any Docs with my dress up wear. Because it’s not a blanket answer in trying to respond to the question that applies to every style of Doc shoes. So to most Doc’s in my opinion No because the shoes are not usually formal type. However, Doc’s does have an original low cut shoe which I have no idea what’s it called but it’s an original low cut in black. It has a normal dull kinda black color and another that has a more leather finish with more shine. The shinier version can pass wearing with a casual outfit with Chinos and or Jeans obviously. You could wear that particular shoe if you had to with Wool Trousers in the black color as the shoe has a formal plain look other than the stitching. But it’s worn in a casual dress style. Now if I has to go more formal up and wear a suit or even a suit without a tie, I wouldn’t be wearing this one particular Doc’s at all or any in any capacity. I’ll have a solid pair of leather shoes in brown or black depending on what I need for shoes. And that’s the only way I could answer that. Because the answer depended on which exact pair of Doc Martin shoes we are gonna give a yes to where the vast majority is a No. the one shoe that’s a yes the low cut Doc’s has a look of a Darby type shoe. Thus it’s casual or sharp casual in dress wear at best. But if you go formal up to a suit again, not recommend or No. But at end of day what you may choose to wear or not wear is your choice for whatever your reason.

Ash if you were to own only 3 sport coats what would they be? I'm thinking of purchasing Tweed, Windowpane, and perhaps a Plaid. Not really into Corduroy in case anyone wants to chime in. Appreciate the insight as always.

I often wonder about people who only wear casual clothing all the time and never even aspire to anything better. Don't they ever get tired of sloughing on the same miserable jean and t-shirt combination every dreary day of their life?
