The worlds of dive watches and chronographs are vast and they each have mega icons and players. The world of dive watches boasts the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, and of course so many favorites from Seiko such as the SKX, Turtle, Marinemaster, and 62MAS. For chronographs we have the likes of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch and the Rolex Daytona. Both kinds of watches are incredible however, if I had to choose which one was better, it would be dive watches without any hesitation.
In this video I’m going to go over 6 reasons why I think dive watches are better than chronographs and I will also go over 5 extra uses for the rotatable dive bezel beyond the standard elapsed minutes. But, as much as I love dive watches, I love chronographs as well and I didn’t want to pile on lol. So I will also go over some of the main advantages that chronographs have over dive watches. Which kind of watch is your favorite??

Very true! And actually the more I think about it I think I like the speedmaster as "a speedmaster" more than as a chronograph if that makes sense. I love it as a chronograph bc it's so well designed however much of it's staying power is based on the proportions, case/lug design, and the aura of space. In the end no other chronograph out there can combine these aspects into a package as compelling as the speedmaster (for my tastes at least). All this makes spending anything more than $500 on a chronograph a bit daunting😂

Thank you. I was seriously contemplating making a video on this. But now I don’t have to. You did it, and very well done. I own multiple divers and chrono. My latest diver is the Bulova Presicionist. My favorite chrono is the Omega cal 1045 with the center chrono minute hand you mentioned. I don’t swim but wear divers for their easy legibility in almost any light and for functional purposes they are built tough. I also like that they are often large. My Bulova just mentioned is just over 49 mm diameter, not counting the crown. Perfect size for me. The bezel on my divers is in constant use at work and at home, so for me it is a real “tool” watch. Keep up the great videos.

Very good points. I definitely notice the benefit of legibility with a dive bezel vs a chrono sundial, and when I am cooking I very often forget to start timing right when I put something in the oven, but with a dive watch I can say “that was about 3 minutes ago” and just adjust accordingly

I agree with pretty much all of your points. It’s interesting to break it down as having owned both variants for years one often makes subconscious decisions about which to wear and in what circumstances. One final point, my Brosnan era Seamaster 300 seems to go equally well with a suit or when taking a plunge into a swimming pool.

All good arguments on the Dive bezel. To take it a step further my daily wear is a GMT divet with a 24 hour bezel. The 24 hour bezel just makes it easier to track thd thord timezone and I do use three timezones in my daily work. Similarly using the dive bezel for a second timezone it is a snap to use the 24 hour bezel for a timer. And my lume lasts all night even after wearing long sleve shirts that cover the watch most of the day. Thanks for an interesting video.

Sure thing I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah diver GMTs are awesome and honestly any GMT with a rotatable bezel would work well for me for timing! Thanks for educating me on the different ways of using the dive bezel! Agree with all your points, I also find the looks of the chronograph to be more versatile. My hesalite speedy with leather strap is incredibly light and compared to bracelet, rubber or nato, I find leather straps to be the most comfy. With all that said, my speedy do get ample wrist time but then again my collection is smaller than yours 😝

Yeah the dive bezel is a wonderful little thing! seems like its only missing slide rule capabilities😂 yeah it never ceases to amaze me how my speedy can look incredible on a black rubber strap, any nato, and then just as good on any leather strap then next minute! I do wish my speedy got more wrist time and actually I'm going to finally start a collection purge to make sure that the watches that are the most special too me (like the speedy) actually get the wrist time they deserve!

Both are great but I tend to wear my Speedmaster more than my Black Bay. I put a Casio on the bottom of a NATO strap and then put my Speedy on top to use as my travel watch. You get style, a chronograph, date, alarm, and a second time zone. It's a beast.

Dive watches are very versatile. Chronographs are situational in my opinion but I find it useful for driving and travel. Speaking about that, I wear my Timex Waterbury Chronograph when I'm on the plane since it has the quick time zone set feature and using the tachymetre to measure rate of speed and distance. Then I bring a dive watch for sports activities during vacation

Wonderful video, thank you! One significant functional advantage of the chronograph - you can measure events that are interrupted by other events by stopping and starting the chronograph. You cannot do this with a diver 🙂 Also, best of both worlds is a chronograph with a diving bezel 🙂

I think it's likely that when you get sick of divers (however long that takes) you'll go back to chronographs and when you're tired of that you'll go back to divers. Spend enough time mostly with one and eventually the other starts looking better. I'm coming off a near decade run of divers as a primary and now all I can think about is chronos and aviation pieces.

loooool yeah that sounds just about right even in terms of wrist time! I love my divers but i need a palette cleanser every once in a while. Actually I wore my speedy again after a long time bc of this video and now I've been wearing it quite a bit which is ironic considering the video! I'd love to make a switch and concentrate more on chronographs although thats a change that cant be forced in my case lol. Speaking of chronos and aviation watches the navitimer has been a watch that I've been admiring for a veeeeery long time. Not sure if I can justify it given the wrist time chronographs usually get
@Chef_Alpo

@@thewatchidiot I think the Navitimer (one of a manageable size) is a worthy addition and offers a more classic and versatile look than the Speedy. Breitling has a way with bracelet design and their classic styled pieces are timeless. Not sure if I would own one at this point however, I have a few luxury pieces left but I'm disenchanted with spending so much on a single watch. Having recently reconciled with quartz (after many years of senseless rejection) I found my interest in collecting rekindled by going back to my earlier days of Citizen, with no shortage of gadgety dad-watch goodness. If I am to be completely honest, I got far more a thrill and enjoyment out of getting a $200 restored Navihawk from the 90s than I did out of my first Rolex (explorer II polar maxi) even.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 2 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah the smallest possible navitimer would be the choice for me, the slide rule is just so much fun to use! Yeah I totally get what you're saying most of my wrist time is taken up by watches that are around the 200-400 dollar range, my Seiko SNE569 solar quartz diver was my most worn watch of 2021! I'm glad you're enjoying quartz, I love quartz bc of the practicality and it helps that it keeps the price of watches down as well lol! And the technology behind quartz and high accuracy quartz movements is pretty incredible

Really solid points. I'm glad this didn't just focus on "style" but actually gave concrete points, like starting timing in the past, use for countdown, etc. I've got a speedmaster so I'll try to outline some of the benefits over a diver: * A chronograph can be started and stopped without having to see the watch. You can keep your eyes on whatever you're timing to make sure you start at perfectly the right time and stop at the correct time. * A chronograph can add time together. So if you're timing how long you spend at red lights on a drive you can pause the chronograph between them and have it add up all the time. Classic example would be timing sports, since you can pause during a stoppage and resume when play resumes. * A chronograph reading does not have to be read as soon as the thing your timing completes. You can pause it and recall it later. * A chronograph can be started on far shorter notice. Setting a timer bezel takes a bit of time. And like you mentioned, accuracy of the reading. A chronograph can be accurate to fractions of a second and a diver will only be accurate to within 30 seconds and can't time things lasting multiple hours. So timing how long a film is etc. is much more difficult, or timing for sports where you need to the second accuracy.

I totally agree with all your reasons. I inherited an Omega Seamaster Chronograph from my uncle which is by far my favorite looking watch I own, but I wear dive watches most of the time due to their functionality. The Casio Duro is unbeatable at under $100 and that's what I normally wear when on/in the water. The build quality is amazing for the price and it can go up to 200 meters which is much better than most dive watches even 10x its price (also I feel bad going in the water or bad weather with a dive watch that cost me several hundred or more, the Duro is cheap and easily replaceable).

Yes, that's the one! I own a Longines Master Collection Chrono Bicompax 40 mm which features this movement. I don't think it's COSC but still keeps time at about +4 secs a day. The watch case is only 11 mm thick and is in fact the thinnest of all my watches. I'm considering selling it to get a BB58 but I really don't know if I should. A good collection has both. While there are pros and cons to both, I generally think that chronographs are more impressive and more interesting, but divers are more practical in everyday use. I'm not sure I follow all of the very niche points made here, but the water resistance and legibility of divers makes me say they are more practical. Also, how do you not have a Ball? If you love lime, you need a Ball. The tritium is insanely fun.

The main reason for people buying chronographs seems to be fascination for the movement rather than practicality. For me the legability (and to some degree cost) outweighs the minimal practicality gain for any analog watch. The only "chronograph" I'd be interested in would be a digital G-Shock.

It all depends, I have 3 chronos in rotation and love using them for timing a lot of things I need to do. I don't have to look/remember the time, just start the chrono. Of course I can easily use digital watches for that...but that takes away the tactile feel u get from using an analog Chrono. It's like driving, those indiosyncracies is what make mundane chores a bit more fun. That's life otherwise where would the fun be? 🙂 Regards

Eerie how I’ve recently had this point hit home for me. My use case is driving at night. Ideally I could just look at my watch and see how long its been, but you can’t do that with maybe any chronograph. You can wear a gshock as well to compensate, but I’ve been searching for a dive watch as you say. I prefer when the crown is not screw down which makes for a search. If I can try it in person and it feels good then that can work. Also, the ideal is if there was both an inner and an outer bezel, for doing minutes and hours.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 2 жыл бұрын
lol we're on the same wavelength! Yeah driving at night with a chronograph is pretty much useless and while a gshock is better i still have to either press the button with my other hand or flick my wrist to get the auto backlight to work. Nothing beats the ease of charging up the lume on a dive watch and being set for hours afterwards! Yeah trying on a watch in person whenever possible is the best way to go about buying a watch. As for a diver with two bezels, I'm not sure I've seen any around but the Bulova A-15 pilots watch has 2 inner rotatable bezels and its really cool!

Another interesting video TWI. I can't really disagree with any of your points. I'm a diver fan, a chronograph fan, and a whole bunch of other watches fan. I could have just said a watch freak. So after many, many seconds of thought I think I might just have the answer. The ideal watch is a diver chronograph 🙂. Examples are the Seamaster 300M Chronograph (previous non wavy dial generation) with a column wheel and coaxial movement. It is a bit on the thick side using a heavily modified Valjoux 7753 as a base movement but for chronograph readability it's very hard to beat. All the timing hands are in red with lume. It even has the diving bezel so you can time two different things at the same time. I love that watch.

@thewatchidiot 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks as always Anthony! Same here, I think its best to be a watch freak for all watches! And you're absolutely right diver chronograph is the ideal combo for sure I actually got a Seiko diver chronograph thats a solar quartz to scratch that itch. The added utility and timing capabilities are undeniably amazing The SMP300 chrono is a beast for sure and while I havent seen your version I have worn the latest version and it was definitely an awesome experience. it was weirdly comfortable and i loved that it managed to retain the very specific "Seamaster Pro" feel. however, it was just a bit too big for me which would inevitably lead to lower wrist time unfortunately. Have 12 watches 4 chronographs 1dress and the rest divers. So yes divers get most of the wrist time. But that's party because I'm retired now and am dressing casual more. When I worked the first mechanical watches I bought were chronographs because they work with pretty much everything. Lastly as you pointed out. Chronographs can be hard to read and having got Older divers just work better for timing short inteval like when cooking than the chronographs. But I do love my chronographs and the buttons.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the versatility of chronographs (at least relatively classic looking ones) to be dressed up and down is pretty incredible. No matter how unsporty any one diver may be the fact that it has some sort of a bezel with big numbers outside makes it too sporty in my eyes. meanwhile I can truly wear my speedmaster on a rubber strap or nato and then put in on a leather strap paired with a suit! But the practicality aspect is there and the subdials are usually too small to read for any sort of mundane task and its happened so many times that i completely forget that I started the chronograph 😂

I think the biggest ding I have against a chrono is that they don’t tend to be as well suited to being dressed up(on average) plus they don’t tend to be water resistant and so if I’m on vacation and I go to the pool I don’t have to worry about jumping in as I don’t like leaving it in the room

I think you thinking of the Longines Legend which have a ETA2892 movement, I don’t think it’s the thinnest movement but it is quite thin for a dive watch. Do you dive or do you just like the look of the diving watches, I always wonder how deep people think 99% of divers go under water when they talk about 100m or 300m pressure resistance and always tend to want to go for the highest amount. Most divers don’t even go under 50m never mind 100m or deeper so in the end it’s pretty pointless having a 1000m watch, unless you’re Aquaman of course.

Chrono for show, diver for go.

"Chrono for show diver for go" is a good one and it hits the nail right on the head! And I agree when I need a watch to just work and disappear my SKXs are usually what I go for but the feeling of wearing the speedy is pretty special but I never wear it when it rains outside (although I know it'll be ok lol). Indeed a Diver watch looks more attractive but not necessary does it means that it is elevated than a chronograph, it depends on the personality of the one who’s wearing it. I mean if a Racer wears a diver watch and if a diver wears a chronograph, its going to be a proper mismatch. If a timepiece suits your personality that will look the best on you. But surely the information you gave is very nice. I feel Timepieces are categorised according to the requirement of the wearer’s personality. There are many watches to choose for so many personalities. 🥂 cheers

I think I like the utilitarian dress watch approach moreso than tool watch but make it luxury approach, if that makes sense. The only strong argument against divers is the noise of the bezel I used to work in a quiet office and I could feel the eyes glaring at me as I skkkkkkrted the bezel to time a peice of work (especially if I overshot and had to go round again). Divers are better than (analogue) chronos because I haven't seen a normally readable chrono with 40mm or less in diameter. Also, because the bezel doesn't add any complexity to the movement, it's not so prone to breaking.

A diver's bezel every time for me for everyday mundane timings. Chronos often have more interesting dials to look at let's be fair, but so many are way too thick due to their complications and have disappointing lume. Finally, sportier use or going on holiday such as swimming etc far safer with even a basic diver, that will often boast at least a plus 100 metre depth rating, most with screw-down crowns.
