My parents would ground us by taking away TV 2 or 3 months at a time. Pretty extreme for a kid, and by the time I was 13 I no longer cared for it. Looking back now, I'm glad they did since my creative mind wouldn't have been able to develop. I taught myself how to fix computers by the time I was 16 without the help of the internet. Even if we had internet, KZbin would still take like 3 years more to take off. I was able to move from computer repair, to networking, to my present business of web development and internet marketing. As an adult, I see people I know invested in crap like The Kardashians and other nonsense instead of investing into their lives. Maybe that's why they call it TV programming.

How inspiring! I really do agree with you in that it robs us of creativity. I feel so much more creative now that I don't have one vs when I did. That was major punishment for a child, but it's awesome how it turned out for you!

Maybe someday. When you make small changes, it doesn't seem as difficult, but I also HIGHLY recommend the book the 5 Languages of Love. When you strengthen the relationship and work together for a common good, anything is possible! There's an audio version too. I listened to it for free with my husband on the Hoopla app. I do believe technology can take precious time away from relationships, and it's super important, in marriage especially, to keep the bond! So I hope you listen to it or read it and that it helps!

I knew I had to watch this as soon as I read the title. People get so shocked when I tell them we don't have a tv. They ask 'then what do you do?'. In my country there is an annual license fee you have to pay. After I moved out of my parents home I decided not to get a TV bc I barely watched it in my parents home. All I use to watch was old episodes of the Simpsons. 3 years without one and I'm living just fine Edit: You are super lucky to have a husband who shares the same mindset as you. I really wish my husband shared the same minimalist lifestyle as I do

I can definitely relate. I often get the same reactions. Yes, that is a huge blessing. It wasn’t always that way though. He used to be addicted to video games. I didn’t always do the best at it, but I tried to change my own habits and show empathy instead of nag. With time, he began to change some habits as well. Eventually he made the decision on his own to donate his game console. Be patient and it will happen in time.

@@YesiIbarra I agree here. I recently stopped watching news in 2020 due to the negativity contributing to my poor mental health. I recently went on news at the end of 2021 due to the passing of a family member being displayed on there but stopped because the media were twisting the incident that happened + also people profiting off a video about it. Mainstream news honestly disgusts me as they profit off people's misery.

And i think im going to sell it . Because i actually dont need it . I needed it when i was little and there wasnt thay much movies on internet :) but now i jist dont need it . Its more frustrating because theres a kot of commercials brainwashing us so you can easily find yourself in a brainfog .

I have a moral dilemma here. If we go with your tv murders and make a comparison to actual violence in the world and what difference I or others can make by knowing, it’s then the motivation by knowing and repetitively seeing that drives me (us). Whatever type of screen that is.
@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra 7 ай бұрын
We always have free will. However, we become what we repetitively think. Our thoughts impact our actions. They shape our perception of the world and in turn how we react. So maybe it doesn’t mean we are going to become violent ourselves, but it can make us think negatively about society, make us think that people are bad, or fear an economic crash/tragedy as an example. Media is a business with a motive, specifically the news. It’s to keep us hooked, so they need excitement. I am so glad that while I worked on a COVID ICU unit I did not watch the news or have TV at home because constantly hearing about it all caused me anxiety. Instead, I tried to focus on opportunities to improve. And many people did! Many businesses were creative and found opportunities to work differently. Many people took it as a time to work on improving their home life. So yes, we have free will, but the message we are constantly bombarded with affects us. Consciously or unconsciously. If you’ve heard the saying “you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” it applies to media as well. What message are we hearing? Is it a message of hope and encouragement? Or negativity and fear? I’m not saying TV is evil. Or that all media is bad. Just giving a warning that we should be aware of what effect it’s created to have on us.

I probably would if I questioned my life’s purpose. But when you find meaning in the things or projects you do, even mundane tasks can be fulfilling. For example, teaching my two kiddos how to prepare their own parfait (and make a huge mess in the process) is so much fun! We laugh together and then enjoy the fruit of our work. The memories I treasure most do not involve what I have seen on a screen.

@YesiIbarra
@YesiIbarra 2 жыл бұрын
I can see how that’s very easy to do. Phones and laptops are portable. For us it was about eliminating a problematic habit for something that was more important, so in a way it was like it gave us a “plan” or reason why in general, using less technology became important.

You address a great point about screen time. I address that in other videos. I’m not against the use of technology in general. We have a laptop and watch a movie about once a month. The TV is just no longer the center of our home. We’re happier that way.
@mchobbit2951

Oh jeez. The point is to use technology as a TOOL rather than let it dominate your life. Getting rid of TV and streaming is usually just a great way/first step to drastically reduce your screen time precisely because nobody needs a TV for their job nor is it required to order tickets or any of that. Some people still want the fully screen free lifestyle enough to make whatever career change necessary and whatnot. Others don't want to go as far because going that far can come with well, downsides. For some, it might not even be possible, at least not at the time. Yet pretty much anyone (other than TV reviewers) can just get rid of their TV. The only downside/side effect is other people's reaction to it and extra time.

Other than old favorite movies and TV shows of mine, I usually don’t watch TV. I’m thinking of getting rid of my TV and only use my iPad and get movie and TV apps, including Sling TV. The only thing I still don’t know yet about is how to get old videos you’ve taken of yourself and families, especially in the 90s. Anyone know?

Like converting VHS to DVD? Some locations can do that. I don’t know about where you live, but near me, there are certain pharmacies with photo services that can do it. Like Walgreens for example.

I used to watch the news and crime scene investigations and wonder how there could be so much evil in the world. It gave me paranoia and sadness. When I stopped watching TV, I chose to remember that if I see humanity with hate rather compassion, then I am part of the problem. It shifted my focus from ‘seeing all the bad’ to trying to becoming more compassionate. (Because the news RARELY shows positive things. Not much money in that.)

Time to say goodbye to modern life. I wish my parents didn't bought a TV because when I was child, I often keep stimming and brainrot because of those shows/movies I was exposed to/used to watch that were a bad influence on me. It's sad that parents out there keeps buying material possessions to keep their kids entertain so they could avoid spending time with them. My little girl mind couldn't focus on school work and etc. Now that I'm 20, time to say goodbye to TV, internet, social media, computer, smartphones, video games, and other screen related technologies. I want my future kids to grow up to be smart and stable. I realized now that I don't really need all the things they're selling out there. Only clothes, food, CD player, and roof over my head is about enough. :)
