As construction starts to embrace new technology, so the robotics industry is starting to create alternatives to manual labour.
Boosted by advances in sensors and artificial intelligence, a new generation of machines is automating a tech-averse industry.
While still in its infancy, some construction robots are now either already commercially available, or nearing the point where they could be sold or rented to contractors.
Here are six robots that have already been developed for the construction industry.

● 1. Baubot 3D Printing Robot is a Construction Site’s New Helper
Printstones, an Austria-based manufacturer of mobile 3D printing robots for the construction sector, has announced the launch of its latest manufacturing robot.
The Baubot is characterized by its modular design, meaning it allows for third-party customer modifications with ease. Described as a ‘multi-functional construction robot’, the rover-esque device goes beyond just concrete 3D printing, and is capable of a whole host of flexible manufacturing operations such as material transportation, welding, milling, screwdriving, plasma cutting, painting, and even brick laying.

● 2. OKIBO is developing mobile, multi-purpose, autonomous robots for use in construction sites.
Construction tech start-up Okibo has developed what it claims is the world’s first autonomous plastering and painting robot. Its maker claims that it can cross the rough terrain of a typical construction site and uses 3D scanning to map its environment without any prior information. A robotic arm has floor-to-ceiling reach. No manual programming is required.
The robot is designed for the harsh conditions of a construction site. It has 3D scanning capabilities (2-3 mm accuracy), computer vision, floor to ceiling reach, autonomous movement and an agile industrial robotic arm.

● 3. Hilti JAIBOT - Drilling robot with greater speed, accuracy and safety
A semi-automated drilling technology, the Hilti Jaibot is a robot that helps add more productivity to your installation projects. This innovative construction robot takes over installation execution, while allowing you to track project progress and status through data. Using digital plans, the Jaibot marks and drills holes, relieving construction workers from the strenuous task of overhead drilling and allowing them to focus on operation of the construction robot.

● 4. Dusty Robotics FieldPrinter automates building layout
Dusty Robotics accelerates the construction industry's digital transformation by providing robotic automation services for the job site.
FieldPrinter is a mobile robot that prints layout plans directly onto the floors of job sites. The robot uses layout plans that were created using building information modeling (BIM) software.
Dusty Robotics is planning a wide-scale commercial launch of FieldPrinter in early 2020. It will be available as a robot-as-a-service (RaaS) model, with pricing based on the scope of the project.

● 5. ULC Robotics, SGN to develop all-electric excavation robot
A collaboration between ULC Robotics and SGN, one of the largest gas network companies in the U.K., has reached the halfway point in a project looking to create an autonomous robotic system that can be used for roadway excavation projects within the utilities sector.
The Robotic Roadworks and Excavation System (RRES) project, which began in early 2018, combines a powerful industrial robot, an all-electric track drive system, below-ground locating sensors, artificial intelligence, machine vision, and new vacuum excavation methods for safer, faster autonomous road work projects.

● 6. Built Robotics - AI Based Autonomous Construction Equipment
Built Robotics is an industrial automation company that designs to make autonomous construction equipment. They also allow one equipment operator to oversee a fleet of vehicles working autonomously in parallel. It combines sensors such as GPS, cameras, and lidar with advanced software, and the systems can be installed on standard equipment from any manufacturer.
