I do the outline in the dark with the reference picture displayed on my pc monitor and I put my paper above it and it's easy to trace the outline, call it lazy or cheating but it actually work and it's fast xD

So incredible. How would you handle a portrait of someone with lighter skins? In other words, how many times would you blend?

Great question! The process is exactly the same but how much pencil I put down on the paper would potentially shift. The 3B and 5B layers especially would be more about bringing out the contrast and looking for the areas of shadow on the face. I'd potentially lighten up more areas at the eraser stage but the core process of layering and blending doesn't really change much.

Great video Gemma! I have 2 questions if you don't mind: 1. About how long does each step take for a 6 hour piece? 2. Would it be possible to see a basic comparison of the 3 step layering compared to going straight in with a dark pencil? I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "It wouldn't look anywhere near as rich" (at 5:08) so it seems like it's something that's quite tough to explain in words.

Hey, at 2:40 just after you state you’re using an HB pencil, the result on paper is quite dark - are you pushing hard? Or just lighting the video such that it’s more visible? Just asking because knowing when to start going dark is still one of my main issues (as well as patience, much of the time 😂)

Hi Gemma great video !! You are so skilled ! It’s amazing. Out of interest which brush would you recommend for blending graphite ? There’s make up brushes but I wondered if there was one specifically for graphite you would recommend ❤

The shine is difficult to avoid - you can practically see my studio lights in the drawing 😂 I did see a while ago that there are matte graphite pencils but I haven't tried them yet. Prismacolor will always be a bit shiny just down to the waxy nature. I don't see it as much with Polychromos though
