In Devil Survivor 2, one of the early game bosses is invincible and you can only beat him when one of your party members shows up and literally drives a truck into it, making it vulnerable. But supposedly if you're playing on a pirated copy that truck just never shows up, so you're just stuck in a boss fight against an enemy you can't damage.

I found an Egg for you Mr. Easter Egg Hunter, Video just uploaded to my now super full 1 video channel. I was playing Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction, and decided to go back through the tutorial to get it 100%. And I saw a little military-ish shed, so I thought maybe ammo or health might be inside. Now I had just gotten done breaking stuff in the gift shop just to watch the physics and how great it all is. (Except towers of cans) so I shot some stuff in the shed and there is a mirrior that was just begging to be "tested" and it looked great. Then a final shot broke it open revealing a strange baseball bat covered in razor wire and red "jelly" locked in place. I quickly shot the lock but unfortunately nothing happened. I tried to pick it up with the X button but got nothing. I'm sure there is more out to dicover, headed back in soon. Good luck to all you Operators out there, see you in the field and remember Leave No One Behind.

I remember for the channel GRA with my mates, We did a Spyro 3 Speedrun race using an emulated version which was fine and worked but added the double jump patch which was an exploit in the 2nd game to it and it ticked the Anti-Piracy on. So while it was definitely a lot of fun playing Spyro 3 with double jump (Not much changed really) It was a good race against the clock that some of the faster Speedrunners in our video who did finish in time and were fine, There was myself and another friend who couldn't finish before it started taking away eggs, I got super close to 100 to fight the sorceress and it took the ability for me to go back to previous worlds when I landed in the 4th hub and wouldn't let me enter any portals. Was really interesting that my mate got different situations and was fighting it all the way up to when he was forced to stop but I got it right at the end. Was really fun though.

Oh and for Spyro 3, the language change measure is only for European versions, since the US version has English, similar to most other retro games when they get a PAL release. US retro games rarly had a language select anyway, but I do wonder if some other games witch language selects have a similar measure too (maybe for English and Japanese options). For Ace Attorney Investigations 2, I guess the measure doesn’t really matter for English players anyway, since it’s a Japan-only title and only in Japanese anyway (I think there is a Fan Translation too, but I dunno) since some English speaking people can’t read or speak Japanese, well I guess they would not mind the measure.
@Hank_Wolfman2 жыл бұрын
There is indeed a fan translation for Ace Attorney Investigations 2. It's an awesome game and the people who did the translation did a great job. I just wish they'd let us have a legitimate English version of the game as I actually think it's one of the better games in the series.

I had actually heard of DJMAX, and I was like, heck, I’m a stickler for rhythm games, so I got an iso file for Fever (it was only one of two for the PSP released in America, the other being Portable 3) and put it on my hacked PS3. Unfortunately, the way the game checks for piracy wasn’t actually able to be solved on a PS3, it checks if there is a UMD (the psp’s weird little disc format) was inserted. So I actually got that anti-piracy effect, and legit thought that it was the PS3’s shitty PSP emulation. Oh, and if you thought Fever’s anti-piracy was crazy, BLACK SQUARE’s anti-piracy was even crazier, mainly due to a big piracy problem with the last game, Clazziquai Edition. Not only does it have the glitchy mess that Fever had, but if it detected an ISO folder on your PSP memory card, it would delete save data for Clazziquai Edition. The thing that made this even more believable was that if you had a Clazziquai Edition disc, you could put BLACK SQUARE into a special mode where you could play all the songs from Clazziquai Edition along with BLACK SQUARE’s lineup. So someone could actually believe that it wasn’t the game doing it on purpose, but their PSP actually just glitching out. I actually play it using the PSVITA’s much more accurate PSP emulation now, and it’s a pretty good time. That first run in with the anti-piracy on my PS3 scarred me for life though. tl;dr DON’T PIRATE DJMAX GAMES, THEY FUCK YOUR PSP UP.

"Buy it or die" Funnily enough, Pokemon is one of those game series that's almost piracy proof since people value having the actual Pokemon on the actual cartridges, especially shiny Pokemon. The only reason someone would really have for pirating a Pokemon game is BECAUSE they couldn't find it or to buy it used would be paying the same price or more than when it came out. A used copy of Pokemon White on Amazon is nearly $100. Shit cost $40 when it came out. Piracy makes sense there, since Nintendo wouldn't see a penny from a used game sale to begin with. You literally couldn't pay Nintendo even if you wanted to, since they never put it up for digital download. They don't want your money, so fuck 'em. Pirate away.

Modern stuff often uses online checks with official servers and stuff, but in the case of the old PSX games it would be code that would check the game was running from a CD and not a ROM, or that checked it was running on official hardware and not emulation. I think, anyway - I’m no expert myself 😅
@tomysshadow2 жыл бұрын
I wrote up a whole long comment explaining this, but KZbin won't let me write anything of substance without simply deleting my comment. Shame.
@CouchPotator2 жыл бұрын
There are many methods, but it boils down to this: the pirated copies need to be modified in some way in order to run when copied to a dvd/cd/any non-official retail version. The game will then check if it's code has been modified via hashing. If the hackers remove the code that checks, further checks could exist to check those checks. The more layers, the harder it is to remove all of the checks. Also, some devs will themselves release a broken version of the game to pirates.
@tomysshadow2 жыл бұрын
@@CouchPotator Sometimes, it's even simpler than that, like it is accomplished by studying some minor detail of the hardware that should always be true. For example, are the files being read off the CD at a realistic speed for CD-ROM? If not, it's probably actually reading off the hard drive from a mounted disc image.
@andrewsprojectsinnovations63522 жыл бұрын
Modern Vintage Gamer made a pretty in-depth series answering that question. For each major console that's ever been cracked, he explains how its copy protection was implemented and subsequently broken. It often boils down to slight differences between the physical media of an official vs. pirated release: lockout chips, track "wobble", physical limitations, etc. These games are the ones, usually released after a console has been out for a while, that manage to detect the tricks used to bypass the console's basic security checks. Once you do that, you can easily check your own code (which is ultimately just more data, organized so the CPU knows where to find it) to see if it was modified to remove the first layer of checks, and so on... As a hobbyist programmer/game developer it is always fun seeing how it was handled at the hardware/firmware level, the creative tricks some developers used to augment these built-in protections, and the equally clever exploits discovered to get around both.

When it comes to preventing other forms of theft, it's been determined that traps deliberately designed to cause harm are unlawful (at least in the United States and United Kingdom), regardless of the fact that they do not pose a danger to law-abiding citizens. So, one would expect the same to be true of digital traps. Since an epileptic seizure has a potential to cause serious injury or even death, deliberately including malicious code that can potentially trigger one would reasonably fall into that category.

I mean the warning isn't at the beginning of the video, but it is still there at 3:06 before the flashing lights segment

@@pilotl1ght I think they meant in the actual game, rather than this video.

I think the time stamp for Leander is slightly off, since it has a space in between 0 and 40. So it is like 0: 40 and not 0:40.

So I believe I have an anti pirate version of pokemon emerald I borrowed it from a mate back in secondary school and I still have it. The game seems completely normal (from memory) but after or just before you battle the elite four the game will shut off and completely reset you. Was so upset when it happened to me so I tried again thinking it was a bug and it happened again so I'm guessing it's programmed in.

Part of the problem with the Fire Red thing is the location in hex. IIRC, it's in a location nowhere near other speech. So I consider it debunked as far as an antipiracy message and instead consider it a ROM hack.

The PC game XIII. at some point in the game the player needs to cross a bridge. The bridge doesn't exist if the game detects a bootleg. You die entering the water, cant cross to continue the game.
