Hello lovely people 👋🏼
So I talked about doing a vlog about jumper patterns for beginners and here it is!
Remember, this is just my personal opinion on patterns I currently have and have sewn up 😊. There’s sooo many patterns out there but these are 6 I have experience of.
Pattern One:
sewhouse7.com/...
(I’ve also just seen tonight that they are releasing a larger size range 🎉)
Pattern Two:
megannielsen.c...
(Also found that this pattern is in fact available in sizes 14-30 in their curve range too 🎉)
Pattern Three:
shop.tillyandt...
Pattern Four:
www.ninalee.co...
(Another lovely lady has pointed out that this Is also available in a larger size range 🎉)
Pattern Five:
grainlinestudi...
Pattern Six:
www.tessuti-sh...
Hope you enjoy the vlog!
Ruan xe

Plus-Size sewist here: The Southbank is also available in Nina Lee’s extended size range. I made it in a size 24 and (unlike the Billie) it doesn’t require an FBA to fit my boobage! I see some others have also mentioned that the Jarrah and Toaster are also available extended sizing. I really like the Cashmerette Pembroke as a turtleneck jumper (more well known for the dress version but the top is equally good). I also have the Named Talvikki but haven’t made it yet, but it looks quite straightforward.

I was laughing when you said don’t be afraid to sew with stretch fabrics if you’re a beginner. I’m a newbie and the first garment I made was the Heather dress, 😄. I saw Michelle from the Sewing Bunny sew along Heather Dress and I HAD to make it, 😁. It came out ok. It’s wearable and I’m making another. Practice makes perfect. I’m fearless now. Not to mention I’m obsessed. I really need to control myself with fabric and patterns. It’s getting out of hand, 😂. Thank you so much for the info, it truly is most helpful. ❤️

I’m a new sewer, literally I just touched a sewing machine 3 weeks ago since I was 15 years old, that was 25 yrs ago 😂. I’m scared of sewing machine ever since my mum told me I’m hopeless on it when she was teaching me how to use it and ended up always a disaster. But I got inspired by my 10 yr old nephew when he was using a sewing machine to do his school project, he literally finished his sewing pillow project in 15 minutes. So I went to KZbin University and learned how to sew, I already finished a toile for a simplicity dress that I like to do soon. I found you in my feed and I’m loving every single video, you’re funny and you keep saying don’t be scared also so you are my sort of coach now in sewing 😂… thank you so much!

Awww I’m so sorry you had your confidence knocked at a young age. No-one is looking for perfection. This is a hobby that should be joyful 😊. So glad you have come back to it. Just take it slow, learn from every mistake and reach out if you’re ever stuck. There’s always tons of us that would be happy to help a fellow sewist 😘

Ruan, I LOVED this video. Great information on the jumpers/sweaters/sweatshirts and I appreciated seeing your take on it. I can see a future seasonal vlog maybe ‘spring dresses suitable for heavier fabrics you can layer with tights and jumpers??’ As much as I love my uniform of joggers and jumpers at the mo in a month or two I’ll be dying to change it up a bit!!! Ruan thanks for all your videos. I love when you give instruction. I hesitate to sew knits just because of the neck band and now I feel confident in tackling again because of what you said in this video. One time you were explaining how to do something in one of your Christmas vlogs and you explained it so well but said "I'm not a teacher" and I thought to myself 'she is so good at teaching.' Please keep including sewing instruction techniques. While I am a beginner, I would think even the more experienced sewists (sewers? what do we call ourselves?) are curious as to how different people tackle different steps in a project.

Hi I watch from Australia and I love your channel! I love all the patterns here and another I have made many times over which has lots of options is the "Unwind" by Pattern Emporium which is an Australian designer. Perfect for beginners as the front and back have the sleeves on, so there is no settiting in sleeves. Simply sew fronts and backs together, and attach neck band, cuffs and bottom band. Cheers Karin 🐨🦘

Hello Ruan. Thank you for another great video, and it was lovely to see Tigger too.... One sweater that I really love to make is the Orono top by 'Itch to Stitch', it is a very different pattern. I have made it from a brushed French Terry and it looks great although due to its design it is "fabric hungry' Another sweater pattern I also love is the 'Sheridan' sweater by Hey June Patterns. I have made three of these out of the cable knit fabric and I love them as they are so snuggly and warm in winter. Take care and I hope you enjoyed your Sew A Long... xxx

Thanks Ruan, very informative video. I’ve made a few of those. Love the southbank, super easy, made the dress twice and the sweater twice, just about to make a third dress. Great video as usual. Why would anyone not want to subscribe? I love the toaster version 2 and have made 4 at least and in different fabric. So you’re right very different in different fabric. French Terry is good. I made one in sweatshirt but not enough stretch so couldn’t wear but I then lost a little weight so can. NOw wear but that’s a lesson. I’ve made different lengths too some cropped well one as I didn’t have quite enough fabric but that’s also beautiful.

Great vlog, Ruan, thanks. I have only just started on sweatshirts and I've made 2 Billies in French Terry so far. I want to lower the neckline before I make the next one, as I find them a teeny bit high up for my liking. I have made 4 Freya turtlenecks too. And I don't have an overlocker so I just use a narrow zigzag stitch on my sewing machine. I was scared of sewing with knit fabrics at first, but it's not that hard once you get cracking, and the results are so comfy, so I totally echo your advice - just go for it!

I’ve not bothered with the jarrah before but now I’ve seen your video I think I might. Quick question- when you’re overlocking the neckband how do you finish off? I always end up with a gap.
@theyorkshiresewgirl
@theyorkshiresewgirl 2 жыл бұрын
It is a lovely pattern that gets you so many options! I tend to start at a bit of an angle, then straighten up and go the full way round until I’m back at the beginning. I then overlap it slightly to even it up. I’ve seen some people cut out the seam allowance at the beginning to start it off in a straight line. I’m not sure if that makes any sense at all 🤦🏻‍♀️. I’m sure Sew Essential put something on her Instagram feed about it if you wanted to check it out 👍🏼

I've had my overlocker for a few months but have been too scared to use it! I popped the overlocker cherry in December but before then, I used a lightening stitch and then finished it off (for neatness) with an overcast stitch. I'm yet to sew anything exclusively with my overlocker (which matches my sewing machine 😍) as I'm not that confident with it just yet!
@theyorkshiresewgirl
@theyorkshiresewgirl 2 жыл бұрын
Go for it! Honestly I was exactly the same but if you choose a nice simple pattern and maybe a fabric you’re not too worried about wasting it’s 100% worth doing. You can do it 💪🏼

I think a lot of the fear of sewing with knit fabric that's generated stems from using very cheap jersey. I'd add to your advice that as a beginner buy some reasonable quality jersey for your first attempt and some good quality ball point or jersey needles for your machine. Cheap jersey can be an utter nightmare to sew, even for an experienced sewist!

I have made a few jersey tops but always struggle with the neckband! It’s probably a stupid question but when you baste it on do you use a zigzag stitch or straight stitch? And how far from the edge do you baste? I’m gonna be brave and give the jarrah a go!
@theyorkshiresewgirl
@theyorkshiresewgirl 2 жыл бұрын
Not a daft question at all! I use a straight stitch but a long one. I sew just inside the seam allowance so you can see what the finished result would be like. If it’s good to go I wizz it thought the overlocker, if not then I can unpick it easily and retry. Hope that helps 👍🏼
