I just saw a reaction video from FOREIGN REACTS and thought I would stop by. You seem to be a very sweet, nice and educated person. I think this whole video is very interesting and informative . And I'm not saying the following to criticise you or to nitpick about this one issue but to let you and others who will read my comment and possibly working in that field know that in the US you can't ask for paper work if you have a service animal. I'm not American but I have a service dog and used to read so many posts in social media platforms of other country's rules about service dogs that I know quite a bit about the rules in the US. The only two questions which are allowed to be asked are "Is your dog a service dog?" and "What tasks has your service dog been trained to perform?" but businesses "cannot require special ID cards for the animal or ask about the person’s disability" (according to the ADA - the Americans with Disabilities Act). However, "A disabled person who has an emotional support animal (ESA) will need to produce a letter from a licensed mental health professional that prescribes the need for the animal when a business asks for it". (

Was just coming to comment about ADA rules for service dogs and I'm glad Kix got there first. A business can eject a customer and/or dog for behaving poorly, but other than that, they're exactly right.

Here you’re obligated to take at least 2 weeks consecutive weeks of vacation. For me, 2 weeks is too short, it has to be 3 weeks at least. The reasoning here is that well rested and content employees are better employees. Due to my age, the time I’ve been with the company and not calling in sick, I’ve earned days on top of the standard vacation days. Also some rollover days from last year, I have 8 weeks of vacation, to spend during the year. Depending where you work, the company will hire temps, or colleagues take over some tasks that have to be done. And then those colleagues are very happy that you’re back, because they realize how much you do every day.

The Netherlands has a mandatory 2 weeks (legal) period for "vaste contracten" aka permanent contracted people per year. On average the 'steady' employed 'enjoy' at least 20 days a year vacation days a year (with some old fart union days, state + sick, and contractual days being ignored for simplicity here). Everybody (even on welfare/unemployment/etc) pays at least 8,334% out of their gross pay into vacation pay that they receive (after heavy taxes) in May.

I would like to make a correction to a mistake that is often made, also by autochthone people from 'Randstad Holland': if you live outside the Randstad or one of the larger cities, public transportation is utopic. I for example live in Zeeuws Vlaanderen, in the south-west of the Netherlands near the Belgian border, and the nearest Dutch train station is over 50 km away. There are hardly buses, and you actually can't do without a car. This is generally neglected by 'the Hague'.

I don't live that far from a train station but I do live in a small town and even here public transport isn't really an option. My last job was a 20 minute drive by car but if I had taken public transport than it would have been a two hour trip to get to my job and I wouldn't have gotten there in time. And back home it would have been another two hour trip. Public transport is great if you live in a big city. In small towns not so much.

Dear Fie, regarding the trains there are several sorts: The "stoptrain" is a train that will stop at every little train stop, The IC = Intercity will only stop in 2 or 3 stops until final destination (so you can get off or get on in these stops) and still these trains are fairly fast between major cities. And then the fastest option is the real "high speed train" ! Here you have to reserve your seat and these trains operate between countries - major big cities. They usually have names : Thalys goes from Amsterdam to Paris and this train will go up to 300 km/hr ! That is 186 mi/hr ! And this while even feeling comfortable :-) To Germany there are the ICE trains that also reach a similar speed. It's a 3.5 hr ride Amsterdam to Paris station to station ! Beats going by car or plane :)

Great to hear all these compliments! Thanks/bedankt. All you mention is based on high government spending, we pay high taxes over labor, capital and goods but also get a lot in return. The Dutch system is still community oriented vs the individual orientation of many other countries! This is also why people that lose their jobs, for instance, still have a base salary, get many subsidies, lower taxes and the same basic health insurance like anyone else. Paid from the government. A social system typical for Northern European countries (the Netherlands, Germany Denmark and Scandinavia) Keep the video’s coming. Very nice!

I don't know about the prices listed in the doctor's office thing, I have never seen that. Though you might be able to figure that out by looking it up with your insurance. As for vacation, in the EU, full-time employees are required by law to get a minimum of 20 days (4 weeks) paid vacation. Most employers in the Netherlands offer on average around 25, but it can be more. The Netherlands does not currently have it's own highspeed trains, nor are they used for local travel, and they are not operated by the NS, nore are they blue and yellow, those are just the regular trains, so you got that wrong. You can't use a student public transport card on high-speed trains either. High-speed trains are used for international travel only and the operators in the Netherlands are Thalys (headquartered in Belgium), Eurostar (headquartered in the UK) and Intercity Express (headquartered in Germany). While university tuition is cheap in the Netherlands, especially compared to the US (around 2000+ euros for Dutch and EU students), Dutch and EU students get study financing to cover their cost of living and travel, which they do have to pay back eventually. So while you are right about the tuition cost, you are wrong about the debt. Though the Dutch model for paying back is a hundred times better than in the US. You pay back based on what you can afford to pay after they have checked your income, since you are not allowed to drop below the poverty line, though you need to request a means measurement first. So if your income is too low, you pay nothing, if it's normal you pay what you can afford, if it's high you pay more. After paying for the time frame you are required to, what remains gets written off. So if you paid what you can afford to for 15 years, for example, after that, whatever remains of your bill, if there is anything left, get scrapped.

@@flower_power The idea that insurers are competing against each other and have an interest in driving down costs is a misconception. There is very little actual competition in the Dutch insurance market, and the more money that flows in through premiums and out to healthcare, the better for them. A well-run government agency might well do better. Though that is a challenge in itself, our current government finds it “too complex” to even just change the VAT rates.

In the US it's a crime against society, in the Netherlands (and most of Europe) it's a personal health issue. Another thing you can do in the Netherlands but not in the USA: Not tipping in restaurants. Our definition of tipping is: "If the service was outstanding, you can consider a tip usually between €2 and €10". The servants will still be friendly if you are not giving any tip, because their salary is allright. I know a few friends who travelled to America and made this huge mistake. They gave no tip at a restaurant and the servant was getting angry. A mistake you make only 1 time when visiting USA

A US (and maybe more generally Anglo-Saxon) virtue seems to be: being in charge of one's own expenses (here including investments). (I noticed "tipping" mentioned in a comment.) Whereas a continental European virtue seems to be: shouldering burdons by those potentially affected. - Everybody can feel the need to see a doctor, and it's cheaper for society if there is no financial hurdle for individuals to do so. - Public transport does cost considerable money, but it prevents individuals from needing a car (or from transporting their children to and from school, in a more flexible way than a school bus). A likely more typically Dutch addition to public transport is the "OV-fiets", a bicycle that can be affordably rented at many Dutch railway stations. (Renting may require a €0.01/year subscription on one's personal "OV-chipkaart", the card used in all(?) Dutch public transport.) Depending on one's personality, one could see a downside to these arrangements: no excuse for being ill, hardly an excuse for being late. And "no excuse" may be something we Dutch may enjoy invoking. :-|

About education, what is also a big difference is that all universities are state universities here, we hardly have private universities and private schools, and they are all considered good universities. There are only 2 private universities, both for economics, and the education there is not better than at the state universities. (But you do pay more, like in the US.) Whats also a difference is that Dutch employers dont really care about at which university you had your degree, they care what study you did but not where. Ofcourse some universities are specialised at specific fields, but there isnt really a ‘top tier’ like in the US: they are all good.

Rail in the USA is hardly comparable with the situation here in the Netherlands. The vastness of the USA makes most attempts to compare useless. You however could try to compare the situation of the 4 or 5 main corridors in the USA, however comparing them to intercity traffic between major European cities would be more appropriate. The longest traintravel in the Netherlands is about Vlissingen to Rodeschool, some 350 Km's, and Amsterdam - Paris is about 500Km's

@@eddys.3524 Well, she could compare the public transport situation on the East coast, let's say between Boston and Washington D.C. It covers quite a lot of densely populated areas. Boston, New York City, Philly, Baltimore and D.C. Not a really bad situation, in my experience, but the much critizised NS would run rings around Amtrak.. Let's hear it from a local.

Hi, nice to see your video ... I've got to correct you on the issue of trains in the Netherlands. Though there is a high speed line from Amsterdam via Rotterdam to France with speeds in excess of 300Km/h, Dutch railways are not High-speed. Maximum speed there is 140Km/h due to the current securitysystem in place that doesn't allow for higher speeds. Replacement of that system by the new European standard, ERTMS, enabeling higher speeds, will take at least another decade. But as you said, railway coverage in the Netherlands is good and most places are very well accessible by public transport. On vacations.. Well, that's about the same in the whole of Europe with the Netherlands lagging behind with the number of days. Most European countries have more official holidays than the Netherlands does.

From what people have told me who have service dogs, there is no licence or paperwork to prove that their dog is a service dog. You are legally allowed to ask what service the dog provides, but that's it. So requiring paperwork to prove the dog is a service dog is useless. Service dogs don't have it.

And the cheaper supermarkets often have the best "house wines" - Healthcare compared to US is not fair. US has a fckd up backward healthcare system. But NL practitioners do not subscribe expensive meds for the least of minor illnesses. - Vacation time compared to US is not fair either ... US is work hard, play hard ... NL is play hard so you'll work hard. - Again : public transport you can't compare. I'll tell you something else you can do in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands it's quite alright to confess on national television how you sexually abused a woman with a candle 50 years ago. Former soccer player and soccer analyst Johan Derksen did that recently. Him telling that is not the problem per se. Him being guilty of such a fact and getting away with it even after this revelation, that's the problem. Even worse is the fact that some people are standing up for him on social media, due to this some media producers want to put him back on the screen. This way normalizing al the immoral stuff he says. It was not the first time that he made misogynistic jokes and ridiculed gay emancipation. What do we expect from a man who compares a black woman in politics to a "proud monkey" just to offend her in what some people name a "funny" way. What do we expect from a government where out of 150 people 28 have an agenda which dictates fascism! A disgrace to humanity and to democracy! 🔻

What is the difference in your income taxes compared to USA? I heard Socialist countries have like 40% - 50% income taxes, is that true?
@williamgeardener2509
@williamgeardener2509 2 жыл бұрын
1. Netherlands is not a socialist country. It's a democratic socialist country which mens that the government can't take your possessions or property from you if they feel like it. Yes, I know about this myth that is kept alive in the USA. 2. Our tax system is progressive. The more you earn the more taxes you pay. It means that you pay about 30% income tax over the first 35 000 Euros you earn. You pay about 27% income tax on income between 35 000 and 68 000 Euros and you pay 31% over income above 68 000 Euros. So someone earning 100 000 Euros per year pays 30% over 35 000 Euros, 27 % over 33 000 and 31% over 37 000 Euros. 3. Despite what may seem exorbitant taxes, European people pay less on taxes compared to US citizens when you take in account that we don't get huge medical bills, that we have a state funded pension and we generally get more out of our tax money. Parents don't have to buy notebooks, pencils and pens for their children when they go to school and the costs of education are much lower. Also our infrastructure is well maintained so we don't have roads with potholes but we do have a functioning and reliable public transport system of buses and trains.
