The fact that in small towns (but also in larger cities) the offer of ethnic cuisine is limited or absent, I do not think it is only an Italian problem unless there is a "kebabbaro" in every small town in the US. I live in a medium-sized city and tonight I eat Syrian food - or at least - what they pass me off as Syrian food: I've never been to Syria so I don't know what Syrian food is like, but I'm pretty sure Chinese food is in Italy it's not exactly "Chinese food", as I'm more sure that "Italian" restaurants in America don't serve Italian food for the most part.

I think there is a bit more variety of international food in the centre or north of italy, like korean, japanese, chinese, indian, peruvian food etc... But i've never seen thai food sadly

I always grab a kebab when I stop in Rieti (my closest town) even if I'm not hungry and when I'm in Rome I'll take the opportunity to get a well known American fried chicken DELIVERED! 🤣 The best Chinese food I ever ate was a random find in Rome, somewhere between Giulio Agricola and Cinicita.

I ate a lot of peanut butter when I was visiting the US and loved it. Here in Italy they're not so good. For the cuisine from other countries, here in Verona we have many japan restaurants, indian, mexican, some brasilian, some greek, many chinese, some thai, but that's all. And I think some of them aren't traditional, but adapted to italian taste (like philadelphia cheese in maki). Thank you for sharing this with us, I cannot imagine how hard it is not having your families close.

You can find organic peanuts butter (and many other nuts butter) in NaturaSi supermarkets in Italy. It's a franchise supermarket specialized in organic food.

In general, it is not that difficult to find a non-Italian restaurant in large and medium-sized cities (even in small cities that are close to large cities such as Rome, Milan or Bologna) Perhaps there is not as great a variety as in the United States or Canada, but you will eventually find a good place that belongs to a foreigner that offers its authentic food. The only problem is if you live in a rural town or very far from the big urban centers. You will have the most delicious food in Italy, but you will suffer missing the gastronomic variety of other countries

It's not a problem of north or south of Italy. In the big cities of the south you can find hundreds of ethnic restaurants, in my city there are different American shops that sell American stuff including the peanut butter.

I think the fact that there are few international restaurants from an American's point of view is mainly due to the fact that immigration here from abroad has never been even vaguely as high as yours. However, there are still some communities that are particularly present here, such as the Chinese or the Tunisian, who create international restaurants which, in my opinion, are generally quite good. Obviously foreign dishes are often adapted in an Italian style to make them appreciated more, but they almost always remain with typical characteristics of that country. But well, in southern Italy there are even fewer immigrants than in central and northern Italy, so the situation is even more "drastic" from this point of view; But if you want to look for good Chinese restaurants, come to central Italy, especially Tuscany (Trust me: I'm from this region and it's full of Chinese Restaurant almost everywhere); while if you want to taste Indian, Mexican or South American foods, you should go to the big cities of the North.

Born and raised Calabrese living in New York here! Definitely miss efficient problem solving/customer service when I go to Italy - my luggage got lost on my latest trip and it took almost an hour for someone to assist me and made me miss how things get done in the US. Also was craving a bagel and late night take out (chicken wings anyone??) which I could not get absolutely anywhere in Calabria. Other than that it’s really difficult to miss anything from the US with all that amazing Italian food!!

I got a very good peanut butter in a local Indian store here in Milan. If you have a Bangladeshi store/Indian store, try there. Amazon ones are super expensive. This was for around 3.5 Euros, no sugar added. So it is reasonable.

- the majority of us don't like PB , but ther's also a big part that love the stuff and infact we buy everything online because it's easier to find that in the market - we spend hours of our life , days sometimes to actually make an operation that require a pubblic operator .. unfortunately that's how Italy works :( - we had a ton of movies and shows blocked in our country but , like u said , we know how to watch it anyways - last point is the biggest one. That's why when we travel and visit other countries we eat so much all the things that we don't have here . Last but not least , always remember that ITALIANS DO IT BETTER :P

I live in England Katie but i still miss so much about Italy. Because i like to cook at home you can pretty much cook any kind of cuisine as long as you can buy the ingredients. Family are a big thing and it's so easy to miss them. I guess wherever we are in the world it's easy to miss certain things. Thanks for sharing

I’ve lived in Basilicata near Matera for 10 years. I agree with you on all points particularly the food, I order oriental ingredients from Kathay in Milan & other things from 2 websites in the UK. If you are in Matera sushi is getting popular, several places to go but Sakins is excellent.

I know) The communication thing is definitely something people take for granted when they haven't lived in a country that doesn't speak their first language! It's hard and tiring but also so enriching and fulfilling. And just having to know how to do things. It's hard! I think it's hard for people who move around Italy too, not just for foreigners. About international food: I live in Aosta, a town of 30000 people, in the North West of Italy. There are 5 chinese restaurants, 3 japanese, 3 pakistani, a swedish one, a true English pub and 2 so- called pubs I'm not so sure that is always a good thing... When I was a boy in the sixties, here the pizzerias where only available in towns, now everywhere in the world you have (so-called) pizzerias...

Katie, I loved the video. While watching it I flashed back to 3 months in México in the 80s. I loved my stay and didn’t want to be back in America that summer, yet I did miss some things, at times, while there. It’s just the way that it can be, even for a shorter stay. You are right with the second thing. I'm from Mexico and it's the same for me, I mean, maybe the Italian is easier to me because I speak Spanish, but even if I have been living in Italy for 4 years and my Italian is good, I feel that I am two totally different person in Spanish and Italian and I feel more comfortable with my Spanish friends Than with my Italian friends. Perhaps it is because my Spanish is more sophisticated than my Italian and that sometimes makes me feel like a person who is not cultured,. fortunately I am already studying at university and my vocabulary is beginning to be more advanced.

C'mon Katie! None of those things but family are really important. Family is the only thing you can't replace with other stuff ex.: you miss peanut butter, you can easily do by yourself, you can't watch some TV shows, than you use a VPN, you can't eat Thai food in Trani, just go in Milano or do it by yourself at home. We live in 2021 not in 1991 (30 years ago everything was harder, even dealing with Italian bureaucracy).

100% I think you nailed all of them completely! As Italian, those are things I also miss as well. I know it sounds weird, but like more variety of ethnic/foreign products, shorter queues and bureaucracy, more online services .. those are the things that make me want to live abroad for a while, just to get that different experience! I also wish more Italians could speak better english to make things easier to anyone who would like to live in our country.. but yeah, I guess is definitely a boost for really learning the language. Here in Rome you can get the international foods, but it tends to be rather bland. I went to a Thai restaurant and it wasn't very flavorful. How is it possible to make bland Thai food?! I'd love to know where you found the good Indian food. If you need bagels you can order online from Beehive Bagels in Rome. It's a small business run by a great couple. They ship to other cities and even internationally. So good when you want some good American food.

Well...In Italy there are many foreign cuisine restaurants. But it is obvious that you can't think to find them in a small village like Trani. If you go in big cities like Roma, Milano, but also Bari, I think, probably there are lots ethnic restaurants.

@@canoening ma anche nelle grandi città del sud ci sono tanti ristoranti etnici, non è una questione di nord o sud ma è l'inevitabile differenza che c'è tra il vivere in una cittadina di provincia e una grande città (a prescindere che sia del nord o del sud). Sono certo che se si sposta a Bari troverà molta più scelta. Vivo a Palermo e non ho nessun problema a trovare ristoranti giapponesi, cinesi, thai, messicani ecc...

Lecce is a great city! It's incredibly beautiful, and really open-minded and international compared to other cities in the south. There're quite some foreigners who live there and they love it. Also, super cool bars, restaurants and cultural activities!:)

We have many Chinese restaurants in all Italy, and a bit less Japanese restaurants which i've never seen run by Japanese, and are nearly always run by chinese people. Pizzaria's are getting taken over by Chinese or Egyptians in the North.

@@TheQKatie I have always used the old way. Crush the peanuts with a pestle in a mortar until you get a smooth paste. Then pour the paste in a large bowl. Add the oil, honey and salt. Mix with a kitchen wisk until you obtain a creamy emulsion that doesn't break down into several layers when you stop blending. A tip, you need another bowl with hot water so the mix doesn't stick on the whisk.

You can find lots of peanut butter at basko supermarket. I bought one smallnjar because I wanted to try it but, no offence, I found it disgusting!!!! I guess to get used to it you must eat since when you are a child as many US citizens do...

Katie, I had Mexican food some weeks ago in Giaveno... Where is Giaveno? Is it a big city where you can get any sort of international food? No, it is a small and lively town.... The place is called Frida and they are Mexicans... International restaurants aside, you should have a tour of Porta Palazzo market in Turin, it is one of the biggest open market in Europe, and "experience the whole world within a walk" (I quote the mayor of Turin in a recent video. In the same video she said "Turin is contamination" , during the pandemic!🤦‍♂️She meant cultural contamination.... Ha fatto una gaffe enorme.... O no? ") PS... Sometimes I make guacamole myself at home (just because it easy and quick, otherwise 🤦‍♂️🙂)

During the summer, expecially in the month of August, it looks like a ghost city, with few people around, shops closed for holiday and there are less organized events. In the meantime I would suggest you another cultural shock to add to your list: Italian politics, specifically the ammount of political debate, information and deepening political TV programs. In a way this could be good for keeping alive the democratic dialectic, but I think in Italy is "sick" . For example on La 7 TV channel you nearly get such programming the whole day, non stop! And Italians and politics!? There are lots of fanatics and nostalgic of ideologies ( sometimes not at all democratic ones and in contrast with our Constitution). Is it possible that a more pragmatic, rational, Anglo-Saxon approach to political issues is a quality of just a few Italian politicians? Off course, in a democracy differences of views are vital but on a shared common basis (the Italian Constitution) of principles and values and with fairplay and respect of the adversaries, instead too often and unfortunately this does not seem the Italian case! 🙂😕😊 Isn't it a culture shock to you? After all culture shocks are not just about what it is better or worse in a place compared to another, but also about noticing differences between them🙂

ok katie! quando si scherza si scherza ma ora siamo seri, forse. Cantava la buonanima "La lontananza sai è come il vento ..." e ho detto tutto. Le serie tv americane non possono essere viste per via dei diritti TV delle singole nazioni, provare ad aggirarle è solo una perdita di tempo. La varietà multietnica è solo per le grandi ed affollate città: a Trani pure i locali giapponesi fanno la fame. Gli italiani, specie i meridionali, sono ultraconservatori in fatto di cibo, non amano il "famolo strano". La burocrazia come la criminalità sono piaghe che purtroppo sono parte del tessuto sociale. Bisogna cambiare il contesto sociale! La puglia è un buon posto dove vivere ma se non ti senti parte di essa ti sentirai sempre FUORI POSTO. Io ci sono nato e mi sento fuori posto. Non è solo un problema di conversazione.

In Italy there are good peanut butter brands, but you can usually only find them in the biggest supermarkets or fitness stores. People who like it usually buy it there, but tbh, most Italians, myself included, don't like the taste. Most peanut butter consumers are fitness enthusiast, as peanut butter is one of the most common ingredient for healthy recipes. Plus, not that easy to start a business in Italy.

La Novi is famous for its exquisite chocolate, made with IGP hazelnuts from Piedmont, cocoa butter, cocoa mass and the best chocolate. Katie, in Puglia ha dovuto chiudere persino un MACDONALDS ,o un locale del genere, perchè ha avuto la "brillante" idea di aprire davanti a un locale che faceva la focaccia pugliese e tutte quelle bontà tipiche della cucina locale.Si mangia talmente bene lì che la cucina etnica non attacca, non ha successo .Naturalmente focaccia pugliese per tutta la vita!:-) se vuoi mangiare la cucina thai, la giapponese ,l'indiana ecc ecc devi andare nelle grandi città.

Well you get more variety here in the food than in the US where everything is pretty bland and homogenized. Regional cooking. There is so much of it. And very diverse. You travel around a bit and you'll find all kinds of delicacies.

I kinda disagree.. what Katie is talking about is multiethnic varieties of food from all over the world and this is actually kinda lacking in Italy. I think we tend to be too close-minded sometimes and we miss out some great stuff that are on-pair with any local delicacy you can find.
