I remember playing when the dealer peeked at the hole card with a ten up. The dealer did the "double look", which meant that the hold card was a 4 (the tip of the "4" appears to be "A"). The ENTIRE TABLE (all strangers) immediately stood pat. The dealer busted and we all slyly grinned at each other.

Great video Colin. On #3, 100% agree protect your identity. To all new players. Don't use a "player's cards" if at all possible. You can flash your ID at the table (keep it in your hand), even cover your name with a finger just show the DOB, but say you don't want a player's card. Most of the time you are not considered a "Refusal" and you can keep playing. My advice also is if you are backed off, leave and come back another time. Cages do not really care about "card counters", they care about Title 31. As long as you aren't sketchy and just come back in a few days with an ID and possibly SSN (if you won over 10k) they will cash out any amount of cheques every time without saving any information or giving your info to Surveillance. Quickest way to get backed off is if you are in a database as a "card counter". Even a local casino database if they see your remarks as "Card Counter" they back you off immediately. If you land in a national database with photo, ID, date of birth, any time you are backed off other clubs will put out an alert on you. Every club in town will then be watching out for you. Not worth whatever comps you might make as a bonus for using players card. Not if you're serious about card counting.

Most Las Vegas casinos have bad deck penetration. They now hit soft 17. When I played, the Strip casinos stood on all 17s. The rules were great. Double on any 2 cards, double after splits, surrender and insurance even on single deck games. Single deck games were dealt more than half way down. Usually 2/3 to 3/4 depending on the dealer. And the dealers did peak in those days for blackjack.
@russlehman2070Ай бұрын
Some of my older blackjack books refer to S17 as "Vegas strip rules" and H17 as "Downtown Vegas rules", because the Strip was all or nearly all S17 and downtown H17. OTHO, downtown had mostly single deck and double deck games at least as late as the late '90's.

I have a friend who was a pro poker player and had to quit. His reason for quitting is because, in his words, he was making money but he wasn’t providing anything to anybody and had nothing to show for his work (other than money). That eventually wore him down. I imagine being a pro blackjack player is similar… fun for a while but not for a long term career.

Sounds like most jobs honestly. I've been a stagehand for 20 years and have been backstage at just about every touring act in the US. It has it's down days but is a very fun job which I love, but it's not as if I'm providing much for anyone other than pushing a case from A-B, coiling a cable, or switching out bands for a set change. I also don't have much to show for it except money, fond memories, and fun times with co-workers. The money ain't that great for everything involved so like most jobs the only reason a person would do it as long as I is because you love the gig. That's why I think one of the keys to happiness in life is enjoying whatcha do for a living regardless of pay. If you have that you truly are one of the lucky few because most people in any given profession end up not liking what they do, often to the point of resentment. It sounds like that's what happened to your poker player friend, and that's not unusual or abnormal. At least he was bright enough to quit. Many aren't.

I assume you are saying you can’t double down on Soft hands where an ace is one of your cards in the initial deal. Wizard of Odds blackjack house edge calculator says that a 3:2 SD game where you can only double on 9-11 (and I'm presuming you can't double after split) has a house edge of about 0.3% assuming perfect basic strategy. For comparison, a 6-deck game with H17, DOA, DAS, and hit/re-split Aces has a house edge of about 0.37% assuming perfect basic strategy. So your SD game is perfectly viable. The only real problem is that you'll more than likely only get 2-3 hands dealt per shuffle unless you're playing heads up, but that's still a decent trade
@Hawksforever993 жыл бұрын
Double only 9-11, NDAS, NRSA, etc etc... ALL of those rules are anti counter... But they don't make a game unbeatable. There's basically two things that make a game unbeatable or unplayable: first you have bad penetration. Secondly but more importantly almost, is 6-5 blackjack. Any other anti-counter rules just suck but unless you have all of them together in combination with bad penetration and a slow game, the game is still probably playable and beatable.

@wayne80373 жыл бұрын
Interestingly it doesn’t matter at all if the dealer get‘s to draw his 2. card after all the players or if it‘s already face down! Sure, the last player might „mess up“ the hand every now and then by playing „stupid“ but it will also be the other way around every now and then. It has no effect whatsoever on the odds of the game. It doesn’t even matter how the last player plays his cards.

Not sure about the Indian Casinos but would expect the same. If you think about it… probably 95+% of the players bring cash and buy chips…. So theoretically there is definitely cash coverage. The Whales and Hi-Rollers most certainly play on lines of credit. Still the casino is required to have enough cash on hand to cover all chips out of the cage. I am speaking on what I knew years ago. Things may have changed in the past 25years. But I would be surprised if they have. Note - This cash on hand to cover all bets and player winnings most likely does not apply to the Progressive Jackpot SLOTS that are often linked to machines in other casinos. FYI - If you’re young you may be surprised to know that Slots did accept the Casino $1 chips or tokens. Heck - I remember when they actually used SILVER DOLLARS! Can’t remember the year but it was around 1970 when they stopped and went to the Casino $1 tokens. BTW- my first time in Vegas = 1968! And “NO” I was not 21 yet! No matter what business venture you go into you risk losing fixed cost of starting. Look at a starting bankroll as fixed cost. Money fluctuates constantly in any business a bankroll would the same. Some months make money some months are a negative. Look at macro outcomes instead of micro. If a business can even last the first year let alone make money that’s a good thing. If you think of the bankroll the same it makes the ease of the up and downs calmer to me. Also I recommend trying to detach from what money is and not putting it on a importance that takes from everything else.

Does counting cards work? Yes. But 10% of all counters will end up making 90% of thr money. Counting cards is 4th grade math but calculating EV, bankroll, rounds per hour, variance, are much more difficult. If you like gambling then counting cards wont hurt but if you're in it for the money you really would have to dedicate years to master the craft before you start counting because you'll end up getting backed off casinos before you're in your prime. You also are probably competing against counters more experienced and more educated than you. Its a young persons game. Learn, study, put the time in, make a run and get out before you burn out. Sounds like what he did. You're fighting for a 1 to 2% advantage to be in the bottom 90% of low earners. You may make it into the upper distribution but you have to enjoy doing it wven on a losing streak and have a level of dedication that most sinply will never have.

Hey Colin, I was thinking about becoming an AP player and take this seriously but is that even possible outside the US? And if I were to go for a 3 month trip to vegas to get to those casinos, I read I have to pay hefty taxes on the winning is that true? Is it even worth it for someone outside the US?
@CraftyWitch19903 жыл бұрын
Things may have changed a little and it's kinda complicated to explain but last time I was in Vegas (just as a casual on vacation) i had a decent win (7k) and was "taxed" on it at the point of withdrawal. Can't remember how much it was as I'm going back about 8-9 years now but I remember I had to fill something in and once I returned to the UK, i got the "tax" back (they call it witholdings i think!)

@@mrbuddah1741 you can still get your ass kicked even though you play a perfect game. You can go on losing streaks which tear into your bankroll and take months to recover from. This is something you just have to live with. It can sometimes feel like the casino in somehow cheating you. But after a long run of getting beat, you can then win the six months worth of ev in a couple of weeks. Then the cycle can happen again. This is the main reason to record your results in a spread sheet and look carefully at the worm line graph of your results. The maths predict that you will be within plus or minus 1 standard deviation 68% of the time and within 2 standard deviations 95% of the time. Rarely do you have streaks of nice and steady winnings.

Can’t stop watching your videos I’m really considering joining. Quick question I know you say we have to play perfect but does perfect really exist? Like we’re human we’re bound to mess up at one point
@JosephGiorgiDrums3 жыл бұрын
Perfect exists in blackjack. There are playing charts that tell you exactly what to do no matter what cards hit the table. there are no guesses, and there are no "gut instincts". There is a right and wrong answer for every situation. If you can learn these answers, and play them perfectly every time, you are playing perfect BJ. But every mistake you make gives the house more money. So you need to be perfect.
@geoffpearce8893 жыл бұрын
@@JosephGiorgiDrums basic strategy for blackjack is based on the fact that there is always an even number of high and low value cards in a deck or a shoe. Some of the playing decisions only just favour hitting or standing. However, as the removal of small cards in a game occurs, some of these marginal basic strategy plays change. If one includes these playing strategy changes, you can slightly increase your win rate by about 5 to 10%. You can still play a winning game without these strategies though. The illustrious 18 playing adjustments are worth knowing for the sake of getting the maximum win. These playing strategy changes cover times when the count is positive. There are also many playing strategy changes for when the count goes negative. Playing these hardly makes an increase to your EV, but their real advantage is that they make you look like a player who doesn’t understand basic strategy. If you are the last player at the table and have big money out, no one will criticise you if you make a positive count adjustment, but they will grumble and talk about you when you have left the table when you are not “playing properly”. Pit bosses often get quite chatty with their regular punters and listen to their grumbles about you so they can get an idea if you are a normal big betting punter or a pro card counter. Who would have thought that getting away with winning is about looking like a loser!
@JosephGiorgiDrums3 жыл бұрын
@@geoffpearce889 Oh I'm aware of all of that. I was just commenting on his question of if "perfect" exists. My point was that there is no guessing or making decisions based on "gut instinct" or "feeling" or... "last time I had this hand, I hit, and i lost, so this time I'm gonna stand". Yes there are deviations, but they are calculated and done on purpose. I think we are in agreement and are saying the same thing.
@stevenhelgason81903 жыл бұрын
Perfect does not exist in AP blackjack. Only computer programs can make the correct play every time. Following perfect basic strategy for a game with a set of rules is easy for a human though if that is all you're doing. But I'd say that around 1 out of every 100 hands(or maybe less often) involves a borderline decision where it is ambiguous what the correct play would be. In these cases there would be almost negligible differences in the EV anyway. Most deviation plays are clear cut. But some more like "toss up plays" Remember - the index numbers are rounded to whole numbers, and converted true counts are based on your best estimations and are seldom whole numbers either..

It's been my experience and also that of other counters I have talked to that these tables offer pretty bad rules and mostly bad penetration. Not really the best tables to be trying your hand at. Additionally Caesars in general has a pretty high minimum bet on all of its beatable tables. The non-beatable tables are the ones you'll find minimum bets being lower than $25 per hand and the reason why they are that low traditionally, is that they are six to five blackjack payout tables. If I'm not mistaken, this would include the swim up tables as well. It's been a long time since I've visited any of those tables due to the poor playability or lack of playability altogether. If you have the bank roll to play $25 or even $50 minimum bet per hand at the big boy tables inside, by all means play them but know that there are many other shops in town which are probably far better for profitability and cost you less on the minimum bet which means less hit to your roll if things aren't going your way.

Got a question; when you get banned from a casino, and you return, you can be punished according to Nevada's trespass law NRS 207.200, it carries a possible jail sentence of up to six months and $1000 in fines, so my question is this: Should you go back and trespass anyways and hope to not get convicted, should you abandon that particular casino, or what should I/you do? If anyone knows, or have some stories about this, I'd love to hear em

$600,000 divided by 1,500 hours of play comes out to $400 per hour. I'm curious about what the hourly average would be if you included time spent practicing, traveling, and doing logistics and took off all the costs. Would it make a significant difference?
@geoffpearce8893 жыл бұрын
Yes it does have to be taken into consideration. You have to consider how many days and months it took to learn how to play blackjack and get everything right. You then have to learn how to deal with all the distractions in the casino that can make you drop the count and have to start over again next shoe. If you are implementing strategies where you never stay at a table after big bets on one shoe, you find that for 8 hours in a casino you might end up playing only 4 hours. Then if you have to travel long distances to get to a casino, that is time not actually earning as well as costs incurred.

I played some decent amount of blackjack some years back. I believe I played a pretty accurate basic strategy, did not bet wildly or out of proportion to my bank roll. I did not count cards. I found (of course, this is a limited sample) that I had a much better chance of winning (and won pretty regularly) if playing a one-deck game. I believe I pretty much regularly lost playing when playing an eight-deck game. Why or how this was so, I don't know. I haven't played in years now. Perhaps they don't even offer hand-held one-deck games anymore.
