@WomanRoaring3 жыл бұрын
yes that and when you get multiple messages about the same job from different recruiters. When that happens I search for the job and apply myself if I'm interested. Every time I've gotten calls or emails from recruiters about a job and I submit my resume through them I never get called back but when I submit my resume myself I get a call. I realized years ago they don't work for the company and the company hasn't contracted them to find someone for them, they're just trolling job postings and then contacting random people in hopes of "helping" someone get the job through them. Oh and then they're rude and pushy wanting tons of changes to your resume. I especially hate when they want me to change something on my resume that is important to my experience in my field and they know nothing about it and think it shouldn't be there. I don't mind having recruiters for temp jobs when I'm in between jobs I'll sign up for an agency but when I'm looking for something permanent I never go through a recruiter, it just never works out.

So I did, we did, etc. I've enjoyed it overall. One annoying thing about it, is the spamming of "plz see my profile" when there's a post unrelated to a job, as the assumption often is (as they don't seem to take the time to read). Joel's mandate was useful though (he also said my colleague's office was 'too large'), several jobs have come my way, via LinkedIn. Thanks Joel. I was surprised to see this surfacing on LinkedIn during the past years, as I saw it as a professional platform, for professionals. And it was like that at the beginning - a time that feels like Mesozoic era. Thanks for your comments re the feel good stories. Sometimes people lay it on pretty thick. There are many people who get on LinkedIn because they need a job and if you've ever been in a situation where you need a job but can't find one, it's disappointment that leads to discouragement that leads to depression. It's important to keep these people in mind when touting your own accomplishments, especially if it doesn't contain any helpful tips or encouragement.

For all the reasons you named, and a few more, the annoying things on LinkedIn can probably be summarized into "People Treat LinkedIn Like Facebook". LinkedIn is NOT Facebook. It should be treated as a professional network. I have a daily routine (that was a suggestion from an "influencer"): 1. I try to connect with someone new each day (the influencer suggested five). But not just anyone. I look for people I know but just hadn't connected with previously, people who are connected with other strong contacts I already have and / or people at companies I'm interested or doing jobs similar to mine. 2. I mute at least five contacts. Usually these are people posting the feel good stories and "rah rah!!" motivations. But also people posting things that really belong on Facebook like opinions on what some celebrity did recently, their "very" personal life adventures, political / religious observations (I've even blocked a few for this). meaningful comments or posts. IG posts: "Look at this idealized image of perfection that you'll never be able to achieve (because it isn't actually real). Just a friendly reminder that your life is a POS." Despite being dramatic about it, I think the point is made. It's still a toxic social media platform at it core because social media breeds false realities, leading to the mental self-harm that inevitably comes from the inescapable human social survival instinct of comparing yourself to what you see. (And I'm not even getting into the echo chamber effect and malicious algorithms such as is used by Facebook). Super yes to this: low quality recruiters - I've noticed that in the past 15 years = recruiters who just send you an email or notice via LinkedIn based on one word in your profile, and in some cases something you did 15 years ago. And frequently it's a temporary posting in a city that I don't live in for a contract job that will only last a few months. It's very bad!! This tends to be the overseas guys who do this a lot more frequently. What you as a recruiter could say to employers, is don't use these low quality guys. I saw something like this on LinkedIn recently. An old coworker of mine shared a story written by a store manager at a big chain retail pharmacy store (that I also used to work for back in the day). The store manager had to cover the front register for a day 🙄 "very humbling" he says. And everyone is praising and kissing his butt about it. Knowing how the company works across 5 different states, it's safe to say this guy, if he started with the company, hasn't been behind a register in at least 10 years, more than likely more than that. He does it once and people are acting like he cured cancer or something. It made me sick. Was it humbling enough for him to pay that full-time cashier a living wage for once? Doubt it.

A pet peeve of mine: I know this isn't LinkedIn's fault, but about 60% of the recruitment contacts I get from LinkedIn are for skills I don't have, stuff I don't do and which anyone could see I don't do after reading the first section of my CV (I'm in Europe and an IT contractor; no resumes here, the market wants a CV where you list "defled a dog once", never mind that it was for a friend).

LOL I live in a tech hub in México and me and my colleagues we all get the same crappy spam offers (makes sense we have similar skills). They don't even bother putting your name just "Position open #### please email me your CV" or even worse they offer positions in USA with the crappiest wages and shadiest companies. (Just because I'm a diff market doesn't mean I'm unaware of the wages in general).

Originally, I generally accepted almost all requests to connect on LinkedIn. One day, a previous employer called on a speaker phone with several other people on the line. He said they were considering a candidate for a position and since he was on my list of connections he wanted to know what I thought of the candidate. I had no idea who this guy was and I was embarrassed that he was on my list.

#1: Allowing photos on profiles. The EEOC needs to come down hard on LinkedIn for doing this. It allows employers to discriminate before the interview process even starts.
@paulaqueirosz3 жыл бұрын
People will discriminate based on your name... in Europe it is very common..
@EchoTangoSuitcase3 жыл бұрын
Has it occurred to you that you probably don't want to work for anyone who would discriminate against you on the basis of your photo?
@bessermt3 жыл бұрын
@@EchoTangoSuitcase Yes I did, but that isn't a helpful way to think about the problem. The goal should be to stop this from happening ever and when an employer can discriminate early in the process it is far more difficult to file an EEOC complaint. That is how this is tracked by those with the power to correct the problem. So I have considered that thought and find it repulsive. People need to look out for those that come after themselves and not just themselves. Nothing will ever improve if we can't start with helping others as what is expected. Have you considered what your suggestion implied?

Yes to this video. LinkedIn is almost useless at times with the BS content posted by its users. If what is posted is less than helpful in connecting people with career opportunities and real jobs, do not post it! Scammers and lurkers are utilizing the platform too often and turning people off from LinkedIn. It's more like Facebook or Instagram instead of a professional career platform.

Infosec worker here. To your point on low quality recruiters; I see a few jobs that looked legit only due to lack of experience of having to try to filter them out. These are 3rd party headhunting agencies that collect resumes/info. If I apply they will contact me but almost never for the job I applied to, however, they will spam the living heck out of my mailbox about jobs I cant possibly fill. Either because they're on-site jobs that are in the wrong part of the country, or because they're focused on something I have zero experience or expertise in. These guys have gotten me trained at how to train my junk filter on my inbox. So I guess that's not nothing.

I was looking for a job in an area I was moving to. Got all sorts of contacts from recruiters on linkedIn who completely ignored the area I designated. I was quite clear I was moving to that particular area. One even called me with the great news that they had an opportunity (which in no way matched my skill set, regardless of the "excellence" of my candidacy in their eyes) that would mean I wouldn't even have to move from my current location! WooHoo! You can imagine how excited I was at the chance to deal with someone who didn't even take the time to learn ANYTHING about what I was looking for. Maybe it's expecting too much; I got the job I was looking for basically on my own (applying directly to the company.)

So can having a long work history. Age discrimination is the biggest discriminatory variable out there. No one in the DICE offices ever address this, because they are the ones most guilty of enabling it to exist. Other factors continually are virtue signaled into prominence and visibility.
@Lunaryse9 ай бұрын
I am quite glad we have the photos because if a recruiter already knows what I look like, then I shouldn't realistically be discriminated based on appearance further down the line considering that it's already visible and not a surprise once I meet with them in person. I'd rather they judge me sooner rather than after I'm already excited about the job. Not as common to be an issue nowadays, but some roles are still weird about facial piercings, but I have a close-up, so you'd be able to tell right away that I have them.

I being an HR was really surprised when I started searching a job for a candidate, out of my clients and positions just to help him find a job. I even tried to approach only those HR who relate with his resume, but I was getting reply from 2 out of 10-15 HR's contrary those HR were having very positive image of helping people. Then I realized people are showing off as an HR to build their profile and then they promote something silently they were least bothered to actually help a candidate, some of them replied will you pay me to find a job for him. Rough attitude of HR and expecting a polite candidate would be difficult. On the other hand candidates having too many job offers and ditching all the other offers and joining only one is like wasting the time of all the interviewer who invested their time.

Thank you for your information and approach to the topics, I really like your KZbin channel.
I do have a linked in account, but I only have that because some free lancing consultant of the company I worked for recommended that everybody in the company would get an account and connected to his account. He never did anything with that and as we found out later he is likely asking every person working for any company he is working with to do the same thing just in order to have a bigger network. Now I know that isn't really linked in's fault, but stuff like that is really pretty annoying to have to deal with stuff like that and basically waste your time for nothing.

It's pretty easy for me. If I get a Linkedin invite from someone, I search on their name followed by an acronym and a word specific to my industry. If it comes back positive, I'll accept. That's probably a lot harder for a recruiter where you represent several industries.

I am not a high demand employee, I'm a graphic designer but I do hate getting the bad quality offers. I got so many emails and calls for jobs that pay way less than what I was making at the time and they're like pushing me to quit the job I had to make less and it wasn't just less money but it wasn't even a permanent position, 3 month or 6 month contract and then what? they would also say, oh they might extend your contract. I have friends who work for the companies that these recruiters are trying to get me to work at and my friends are like, they won't extend your contract because they don't want to keep you and pay benefits so again why would I quit my secure job paying crappy but still better than the temp jobs? I feel like over the past few years LinkedIn turned into a weird Facebook like platform. I see too much stuff that I just don't care about I don't get the point of it and I rarely go on it because I don't see the point. I do see a lot of my connections that are friends that use it the way they should, they post good content that reflects what they do at their job but I see like 3rd level people posting things that are memes and just crap. I just think, why? I love a good meme but on Facebook where it's a personal place not on LinkedIn where it's a professional setting. I didn't even know LinkedIn influencers were a thing, OMG...uhg. I don't mind it here but again I like to keep things professional on there, that's what it's for.
