These suggestions enhance any trip. Solid advice, Dan. Newbies should view this video before their first overnight hike to greatly increase their fun. Other than the specific pillow, I'm an inflatable-on-top-of-boots type, these items even stay in my day pack because they are so useful in an unexpected situation.

Awesome video!.. on of my favorites you've done! I've bought quite a bit of gear from Gossamer Gear. One good thing about the fact that they keep out of stock products on the site is that you can enter your email and get a notification when it is back in stock. They usually get stuff back in stock quickly. I tend to be more forgiving of "supply chain" issues when it comes to small cottage companies. They tend no to have the buying capacity and clout that big box stores have with suppliers. I'll wait to buy if it's something that I really want.

Great list, Dan! Another pillow option that I really like is the Trekology Aluft Deluxe Air Pillow (6 oz and ~$15 on Amazon). It’s a more traditional shape and size vs their standard ultralight air pillow that I know you also like, and has a comfortable cover on it. Like you, I bring two when I backpack and sleep very well. Having one of those and one of the Thermarest pillows might make a great combo.

I use a thermarest compressible pillow too! It's amazing for sure. Also, if you bring water purification tablets with you, make sure you check the expiration date! They also don't last as long after you popped the seal. I tried to use some a couple years later - it did not purify the water like the last time I used it and we ended up having to boil water over a fire instead. Took forever using a mess kit bowl.

Darn Tough socks for the win. Did a experiment with mine. Took a pair of Darn Tough and a pair of my synthetic socks from Wal Mart. Wore each pair for 4 straight days. Lets just just say the synthetic needed to be left in garage to be washed as they were funky. Darn Tough was pretty odorless. On top of warmth. Cooling. Wicking. The fact the dont funk up like synthetic.

+1 for the Thermarest compressible pillow. I have several inflatable pillows, have tried that old trick of using clothes as a pillow, and the Thermarest is by far the best choice. Sure it is a wee bit heavier and takes up a little more room than, say, an inflatable, but why save a few ounces if you’re recharge/sleep time is compromised by an uncomfortable or noisy pillow?

I have one of those pillows. It was great for about a year, then the filling started migrating to the sides while I slept. After a couple hours my head would end up about 2” off the ground and I’d keep waking up every couple hours to fluff it up. I’ve gone to inflatable for the consistent height.
