Joseph is and has always been a very special figure in my life. Both my brother and I were adopted at birth and knew how profound and unique the unconditional love is from an adoptive father. Not a man who simply loves you from a biological stand point, but a man who chose to love you regardless and made you his beyond genetics and biology and all that. I always loved the idea of Joseph because I know first hand how special an adoptive father is. Mine was also a carpenter growing up (as well as a farmer) and taught his children more through hard work than anyone else could. My father is someone I look up to for multiple reasons and I imagine Jesus looked up to Joseph in a similar way. I highly suggest listening to the song “Joseph’s Lullaby” by MercyMe if anyone wants to hear a beautiful perspective on what Joseph might’ve thought in regards to Jesus as his son. It’s a tear jerker for sure.

Joseph was married already prior to the pregnancy. Just Joseph had to go away to build rooms in his father's house. Then when the Father said it's time to get your bride. Legally Brandon is correct. This is why Mary could have been stoned for adultery. Catholics are gentile law keepers. If not Christ would not be on the cross still and idolators. as they have statues on their church. I was baptised as a baby and schooled as a Catholic. Sin is to be confessed to no man save God alone. When I could read and ask questions I understood the Catholic church was a Gentile copy cat church as the Orthodox Jews. No plan of salvation. Only plan of salvation for Gentiles are found in the book of Acts. Chapter 9 & 10 & 15. . Any less one is not a child of God.

I once sat in a sermon where a pastor said blatantly that the role of mothers are so much more important than that of the father, and he used the minimal mention of Joseph as the earthly father of Jesus, as his "reference". I am stunned how people can use scripture to "emphasise" their ideas, which are based on their own ignorance. Brandon, this was an answer to a question I've been asking a long time, because I refuse to believe that God's design for the family, being a father, mother and children, is a mistake. Everybody has a role to play.

@@wennemalino9013 I agree with you. Fatherless homes account for the vast majority of children with behavioural problems, delinquency, drug abuse, depression, teenage pregnancy, etc. The list goes on and on. But unfortunately, in our unbiblical, feminist-run society, men in general are made out to be evil in nature, not needed, oppressors of all human-kind. We are seen as the enemy, and everything that was once accepted as a norm for decency and stability in our society, is now made out to be 'unloving and judging'. My mother died with her hand in mine, my father had an urge to receive forgiveness before he died (you know, WW2 and all the times that as a clerk he had to decide on applications of people to whom he could not do justice in all aspects). I haven't had a moment of grief since, the prospects just look too good. We have a glimpse of what is coming. It's Nov 20th, I'm one day late, but May 25th will come. And again I say, Rejoice! For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 10:9-11 KJV I just don't agree with Catholic doctrine because it is not rooted in the Word of God. What happened in Genesis in the beginning? Adam got deceived by satan and lost his relationship with God through sin. This is the reason why God sent Jesus, the Messiah, into the world; to restore man's sonship relationship with Father God. I then told him that Jesus had a step-dad too called Joseph (he then chimed in and said "Like my middle name!"). I smiled and said exactly. I then told him that I was his Joseph. I'm your step-dad, buddy. But I love you just the same. You'll always be my boy and a Richards to me. And one day you can have that name if you want it. I hugged and kissed him and was glad I didn't cry in front of him. It had snowed and I was sitting on the floor putting on his winter boots for a walk. He took off his toboggan that had a little beard attached to it as a face warmer. He said it was the Joseph hat and he wanted me to wear it. When I was in Switzerland, our tour guide said that older homes had a lower level where the animals were kept. The warmth of the animals helped heat the portion of the house above them. The idea of only 3 wisemen came from the fact there were 3 gifts given Jesus. The exact number of magi is not given, but there were probably several who more than likely travelled together for safety. We all probably know the song “Mary, did you know?”, but there is also a song about Joseph. I think it is called “Joseph’s Song”. There is a line about Joseph being unsure how he can be a father to the Son of God. It is very poignant. I am curious how the legend grew that Joseph was an old man (see the song “The Coventry Carol”) because he was also possibly only a teenager.
@artmomcg Жыл бұрын
Maggie, the song is called “The Carol of Joseph”, written by Joel Smallbone, Luke Smallbone and Matt Hale. Performed by For King And Country. The lines… “How can I be the one, the one to father the Father’s Son, How can I raise a King, when this humble life is all I bring” says perfectly how this good man must have wondered about God’s plan. The song is on a Christmas album called “A Drummer Boy Christmas” by this group. All the songs are so well done. The video for “The Little Drummer Boy” is fantastic, and uses the set for “The Chosen”. Highly recommend to all!!

Oh my! I just listened to the one that Betty recommended about Joseph, by Michael Card. So beautiful. That is probably the one that Maggie was referring to. A much older song, apparently, than the one For King And Country recorded, just last year, I believe. But both are from the same perspective and give beautiful insight to St. Joseph. 💕

Wow. Thank you for sharing the character of Joseph, the reality of life in Jesus' time and clarifying truths about what scripture doesn't say-contrary to poplar brief. Understanding Joeseph's heart, his choice to sacrifice, reveals God's plan for the birth of His son is not solely about choosing Mary, but choosing Joseph, too. "...in Joseph we get a glimpse of Jesus...". Wow. What an eye opener.

Brandon, this was so informative and interesting. Thank you. I always appreciate your video teachings. I also like that you use images from The Chosen on your computer backdrop. May I ask a favor, though? Would you please consider using a different screen saver on your computer? If you could use one that doesn't have swirling movement going on behind you, it would help with our concentration on what you are teaching, and it would not cause a headache or other symptoms for people who have epilepsy or other health issues affected by moving lights. Thank you.

When I was in Israel i was told that the area of the Shepard’s (who the angle visited) was the Levite area so the Shepard were levites and tending the sheep that would have been used for sacrifice. I also learned that that is why they knew the exact location they went to their sheep fold /cave or what ever it was. The only sheep that were swaddled were the sacrificial lambs to protect them from blemish. These ‘swaddling cloths were the priestly garb that were no longer wearable and were also used as wicks for the temple menorah. So he was wrapped as a sacrificial lamb and pointed to being the light of the world. Is there any truth to this?

true?YES! the biblical passages mentioning Migdal Eber /The Tower of The Flock are prophetic scriptural references to the birth place of Messiah.. i think the LAMB of GOD being wrapped in the swaddling cloths of the "lambs of God" is so powerful and the Bread of Life laid down where "Gods flock"were fed is so wonderful..of course those priestly shepherds knew exactly where to find Jesus! What a beautiful picture of Gods plan He laid out so long before us..

Maybe Mary had accsess to such pristly cloth? Since she was a close relative of Elisabeth, ans Elisabeth was a descendant of Aaron and married to another cohen (which would have made John a priest by birth), Elisabeth could maybe have given Mary some such cloth for just this purpose?

Your spotlight on Joseph adds new dimension to the Holy Family. I've always thought Joseph was neglected in light of the magnificent truth that Yaweh was the True and Divine Father of Jesus. You remind us that for His early years Jesus was living with Mary and Joseph (though when Joseph died is not known), and that Joseph taught Jesus the craft of carpentry and possibly brick laying. So in point of fact, Joseph would have had a close bond with the young Jesus. I took Joseph for my Confirmation name and have a Holy Card with his image as a powerful and virile middle-aged man. We often lose sight of the fact that Joseph was divinely chosen to be Jesus's earthly father and teacher. Thanks for much for your enthusiastic essay.

Thank you for the message, in this "Year of St Joseph", which is already known and taught in the Catholic Church. While the Masses for Christmas ( Dec 25 ) focus on the Birth of Jesus; Dec 26 is dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is your scholarship and insight into Hebrew culture which gives the correct interpretation of the Bible. The idea of "the Bible alone" leaves people vulnerable to misintepretation. Many do not take the time to study but thank God for utube which allows you to reach thousands.

Great lesson, Brandon. Great pealing the layers of Scripture back to see the cultural and historic background behind the words. Enlightening discussions on "adoption", the proximity of Sepphoris (Hebrew: "tzippori" = bird) and the details of what a Jewish engagement looked like in the 1st Century - and to some extend, to this very day. Although we don't know what happened to Joseph, we do know that Joseph was around at least through Yeshua's bar mitzvah (Lk 2:42-47) when after the Passover of his 12th year, Yeshua spent time in "his Father's House" talking scripture with the Teachers.

I enjoy your insightful commentary. I have an unrelated question about an unrelated Bible passage, namely Exodus 4:24-26. Seriously, what is going on with this?
@toGiaSheila3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Zipporah of course is the wife of Moses, given to him in Exodus 2:16-22, despite Moses being "an Egyptian", he is treated as Reuel's son and later Reuel's son in law, because Moses came to his daughter's defense and provided for them (by watering their flock). Zipporah defends Moses against God Himself in Exodus 4:24-26 by making her "Egyptian" husband a Hebrew like herself.
@trish-s7y3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know who Zipporah is in relation to Moses. Perhaps my question wasn’t clear. Why was God so angry at Moses, soon after calling him to free the Hebrew people, that He was going to kill Moses? What happened between the burning bush and the inn that angered God against Moses. God knew that Moses was an Israelite. That’s why He chose him. Zipporah may have known as well.

The difficulty of accepting the sublime mystery of their spousal communion has led some, since the 2nd century, to think of Joseph as advanced in age and to consider him Mary's guardian more than her husband. It is instead a case of supposing that he was not an elderly man at the time, but that his interior perfection, the fruit of grace, led him to live his spousal relationship with Mary with virginal affection.
@meandmysis27793 жыл бұрын
Isn't Joseph the relative of David? In Matthew's genealogy of Jesus, it says Joseph the husband of Mary was in the line of David. Thoughts please.
@rtod43 жыл бұрын
Matthew shows that Joseph was a direct descendant of David, but not the blood father of Jesus, he was the stepfather. However, legally, the father's line matters. Luke shows Jesus was a blood descendant of David through Mary. So Jesus was both a legal heir to David, and a blood heir to David.
@meandmysis27793 жыл бұрын
@@rtod4 thank you for your response. I knew that Mary conceived through the Holy Spirit and Joseph was his "stepfather" or earthly Father. It was the bloodline I was curious about. I recently read Matthew. Guess I need to read Luke. Thank you again for your insight. Peace be with you.

@@meandmysis2779 God bless you! Luke 3:23-38 starting with Jesus kjv "being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph." That's Mary's line. Note that Joseph's line in Matthew only goes back to Abraham. Luke's genealogy for Mary goes back a bit further.
@stringtheoryguitars49523 жыл бұрын
The genealogy in Matt and Luke documents that Jesus was the rightful King of Israel, directly descended from God's beloved; King David himself, both paternally and maternally. The throne was vacated because of the sin of Jehoiakim (burned Jeremiah's scroll) and that's why his name is blotted out in the N.T. When you destroy God's word, he blots your name out of the book of life.
