Biggest studio tip you forgot: Cup holder. As my grandpappy used to say: If there ain't room for coffee then it ain't no space worth being in!! He never said that...but that doesn't make it any less true.

I agree. One needs a covered cup. Rinsing a brush into a beverage. ¡No bueño ! And I think we have all done that. I do think you need a snack area too.

My studio is my entire house. I don't worry about staining surfaces, mixing art supplies with household items or what people think of my house "decor". Of course, all my paintings are mixed media due to cat hair.

Same here. My cat loves to lay on my art table and watch me paint. Whenever my art studio door is open you will find him in there. Sometimes he will select a brush and lay down on a canvas laid on the table.

I moved into my beautiful new home studio a few months ago, and I bought a bunch of Ikea bins for my shelves. I carefully sorted materials by type and put into the bins - all the adhesives are in one bin, all fabric scraps are in another bin, all my sketch books are in a bin, all of the hand tools are in another bin, etc. etc. They look neat and tidy but when I look at my shelves, I DON'T KNOW WHERE ANYTHING IS! Rafi, you are right, some people like to be able to SEE their stuff!!

I went from basically working in a shoe closet, into having 500 sq. ft. to play with by finally moving into a house. Lots of measuring and blessed with an IKEA a half hour away, worked out a floor plan for the furniture & zones: a digital area, a wet media area, a writing/ lounge space, etc. I gridded it out to scale in illustrator.

I like to use chest of drawers. I have a lot of supplies. I have an adhesives drawer, a watercolor drawer, a drawing and graphite drawer. I have a tools chest of drawers. That keeps the clutter out of sight or some of it ;)

What to consider is ventilation. Especially if you're in a windowless space. When we renoed a room for a studio, we had the contractor vent outside and put in 2 bathroom fans. I can turn them on, close the door and use spray varnish on boards or resin. Then just leave the fans on and walk out, closing the door. It's been wonderful. And sections of slat boards for adjustable shelves and various hanging stuff

My humble studio is the end of the dining room table, that includes a card table to hold my tools, a dresser draw to hold more tools, stock to create, stacked shoe boxes to hold finished inventory, desk lamp, and a lamp that will provide the same lighting as the sunlight to prevent SADS. The TV streams the KZbin videos I watch, listen to music to keep motivated. It’s a tad crowded but hey it’s my creative space.

I used to have my studio in the living room, but the dogs considered it their own toy box. I lost a bunch of supplies as well as finished work before I managed to move to the garage. Safer for the dogs this way too, since paint isn't really healthy to eat. 😁

We adore you guys, too! Before building our little cabin, we walked the land and imagined living in that tiny plot. How would we move through the house, where do we want to sit in relation to the other person. I did the same for my studio. I pretend walked the (empty) space, and FELT where I would walk, how I'd like to face which direction to paint, where the energy is best, where I'd reach for paints, where I'd like to walk to the sink, etc. I painted most of my stuff on our tiny 33 year old dining room table in our 840 square foot cabin, next to office, kitchen and bathroom. So when it came time to build an actual studio, I pretty much knew how I needed it. Thanks Rafi and Klee!! 💖

My issue is Protecting MY Space. Live with my parents, and I've been allowed to have the spare room. The issue is, whenever my family gets into a cleaning sprint, or they feel this or that of my items aren't meant to be where they are - IE dis-homing my stuff - they decide they it then goes into my studio, which is not where it belongs, and it seriously upsets me, because I now have this dis-homed item, that is in a place that doesn't belong, and I have no idea where to else to put it now and it just clutters my space and i get just seriously unmotivated to create. I need to take my space back...

Put a lock doorknob on the door? Not sure if that will fly, as it seems there are "control" issues going on here Try slowly investing in plastic tubs (with lids), that can hold or store supplies and tools If you can "appear" to be "organised", the person with a bug up their ass about "mess & clutter" may not be so triggered....but be aware, you could make it perfect, and it still may not solve all the problems Explore possibility of storage facilities where you could store completed works in readiness for sale...tho investing in a temperature controlled facility is best, it's more pricey Somehow, look after your mental health and balance, and find ways within yourself where you are not feeling so intruded upon... it's an exercise of time, I am afraid... hang in there.... it is challenging not allowing other people's "flying monkeys" to upset our creative flow and output...but you are worrth it Remember...you are part of an awesome uplifting community here You ARE a Rogue Artist... we find ways to explore and express our creativity, (even when bugged by flying monkeys 😉) Keep going you amazing artist, as Rafi keeps reminding us 👍

I so relate! We'll put this here for now and it's 10 years later and more things joined the for now area. Now I don't even paint my now Art/storage room. I took over the dining room we never really used until I filled it with paintings to the point that it's now a painting storage room. I still paint in temporary spaces then clean up when I'm done. I feel your pain.

This is so timely. I moved in to a new house about 8 months ago, and the finished garage that is going to be my art space has been piled high with all my stuff, all my boyfriends stuff, all the kids stuff. I kept putting it off because it gave me so much anxiety. I’ve recently been buckling down and going through it all because I couldn’t stand not creating anymore, and I’m getting there.. day by day. These tips were so helpful and so positive. I absolutely needed this. I loved your wording about creating space, and embracing the mess. Thank you so much for sharing! Looking forward to seeing your studio once it’s ready! 😊

My bedroom is my studio. My personal favorite chaotic tips/money saver. Using furniture you already have to it's fullest. I have an old wooden t.v. stand from like built in the 90's or 80's that has a lot of mixed sized shelf space and a closed storage space. I place my canvasses in the largest cuby, where a t.v. would of been and also the spot where a radio was designed to be. I guess second advice is being opem to furniture with built in shelving or storage. If it is able to function in the space you have planned for it. Also. I personally love going to estate sales for certain type of shelfs. They kinda look like the types from 90's library Because there are some that look like wood but they are super light, have great sized shelving, or the material was used to make various shelving styles, and because they are not ornate or particularly special in design. They are usually inexpensive plus i wouldn't feel guilty over customizing them. Plus they are a sweet spot of not being heavy, and properly sturdy to function as shelving

Frames and the glass are a particular problem, as he's an Oaf and a Pest, And Oooooh Lmao!! Prevention of Rummage Bunnies, Hahaha, Tony Traps!! You mention what I call ~"Tony Traps"!! I had an inquisitive acquaintance, called, yep, Tony, who was a Rummage guy, never stole, but just loved to poke about, if I had to go out for a minute, so, ~ I made Tony Traps, hilarious, because I could catch him Red - Handed, 🤣🤣 I got pretty creative with those!! *I cut a water bottle in half, then filled them up with bits of cr*p, then wedge it, neck side down, so, if pulled up, stuff falls out, and if you try putting it down, it falls over, spilling more bits as well! 😅🤣 Of course, the Tony-Hand~Traps, were immense fun also!! 🖐️🤣 He never seemed to learn, so, eventually, I had to send him on his way... 🤷‍♀️ But, I Still have Tony~Traps about the place, I leave them in-situ, for my rummage, curiosity driven visitors🤣 I am so, so envious of your place, even with your plumbing problem!! I like to paint, draw and dabble in sewing projects. In my studio wish zones would be. A craft sewing zone. A easel zone for all painting mediums & canvases. And a desk zone for all drawing media and papers. And finished and those unfinished objects (UFO's ) storage zones.👽👩‍🎨 A framing zone would be nice too. Right now I'm on a card table in a unheated closed in porch. Not much art made in the winter months.⛄

For oil painters, ventilation is important to think about. Artist and you tuber Andrew Tischler has a great video about this when he had to be in a rental apt for a while - he put in a ventilation fan and shows how to do it he also has in depth how tos about lighting. I got sick using my oils in this temporary apt. Now using acrylics. I paint on the kitchen (living room and dining room all in one) table with an Edgepro easel with an led light attached. My other studio Is my car or the great outdoors😁.

I'm trying to have different "stations/areas" for different things I do- office/computer area, jewelry station, painting area, clay, trying to keep space for and find a replacement drafting table, display area, storage, more storage, etc., etc. I also need to see things and have them RIGHT THERE so I can grab as needed. The shed is now my dry rack, outside under shade canopy ( with night lighting) is my open air painting area with multiple tables, inside is long narrow space for my tool wall, art table on wheels, above lighting and my bed n treadmill on other side. Oh yes my small tv on wall to watch KZbin videos and podcasts and spotify tunes while creating art.

I use to have an art studio until I discovered Corel Painter in 2008. I dropped all of that and made the switch. I never looked back. Now having said that... I moved to a small town, and got to know a few people. One guy "Harry" asked if he could see my art studio. I could tell by the look on his face, he didn't believe that I actually painted what was hanging in my living room. I said, "Ok... follow me." We walked to my "art studio" which consisted of a computer desk and chair, a large iMac computer, Wacom Tablet, and pen. "There ya go." He was dumbfounded. "I don't get it. Where are the paints, canvas, brushes etc?" I replied, "Right there." He said, "Right where?" So I explained that I switched about 3 years ago to Corel Painter. The blank look on his face was priceless. The blank look on his face was priceless. I certain at that point he though I was a fraud. LOL! Poor bastard couldn't relate. But then again he was a good 12 years ahead of me in age.

Thank you Rafi for your advice and sharing other’s studios. I also had a humble beginnings art studio. 3 under-the-bed plastic containers held my supplies and art in 1/2 of a bedroom closet. Everyday I took them in/out. I had a tiny table to create art on. For the past several years I’ve had my own studio when I moved into my 390 sq.’ apt. Utilizing as much vertical space as possible has been a lifesaver. I have 4 quality black baker’s racks measuring 86”x48”x18”. I have a very long dining room table to create on.Some other supplies are tucked away elsewhere in my studio living area.

I have a beautiful space in my walk out basement....but I'm working upstairs currently because my old yellow lab cannot get up or down the stairs anymore....so for now, a card table and my easel in the foyer works! 🎨🖌️ Gotta be flexible and ready for anything....i.e. shitty plumbing issues too 😩

Any creative suggestions for storing tube paints so they are "seen"? I do not have wall space for pegboard and right now they are all stuffed in a clear shoe organizer that hangs over the door.

This was great, looking forward to sharing more photos, I collect my storage from the rented studio, hopefully home studio won’t be in way of any safety checks rental people want to do etc smoke alarm is on the living room side 😂🥰 already using it and feels at home just a lot of clutter to organise once being the shelves and drawers home (I have most on sight but keep rest of paint in the drawers - agree out of sight out of mind so the paint I’m currently using will stay out until that project is done :) ) Look forward to seeing how your studio takes place in new home, is it in the basement ? If so interested what you’ll do for lighting . I’m thinking I might have to invest in LED panels , while I have a window it doesn’t let a lot of light in and painting can be shadowed, then go to check it in good light and it looked different 😂🥰 so have that to sort . I so so enjoyed seeing other rogues studios 🥰🥰

"Misunderstood neat" = adorable. I wish I was misunderstood neat. I'm just a slob. I'm struggling to reorganize my studio right now because my habits evolved and my space needs to, as well, but omg there's so much stuff in here, and some shelves collapsed. I use shelves, too. But they collapsed. Argh. My brain is afraid of this project.

Keep in mind....Somewhere..there is a outsider artist making art on throwaway materials ,mumbling to themselves, doing the same repeated themes in a incredibly dingy, cramped, rotting garage, spare room, tough shed or condemned abandoned house...making More money then you, selling their art and sharing bizarre, incomprehensible stories of seeing visions and talking with intergalactic/religious beings. This is to be inspiration...to find your crappy hole in the wall and transform yourself into that artworld eccentric being exploited by crooked art dealers raking in the dough while only buying the artist those aluminum foil rolls they Covent so badly ...lol

Hey guys, from a tax perspective, how would one go about writing off their art space at home if their company is located out of state... legally wise. Do you sign a lease to your own company for the home space and then write it off like that? Let me know, any advice would be mucho appreciated❤️🤗
