This couldn't have come at a better time for me. I just started my first job as a software engineer, now 2months in. Just beginning to understand the code and I'm also just doing bug fixing T.T and trying to be independent. It's kinda scary being independent though because I work on safety critical software. But tbh I understand because I have a Maths degree not software.

Good luck! You got it
@PeterGeras7 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm basically in a very similar spot to you, except that my challenge with finding independence is because the code before me is very sloppy, lacking consistency and is generally all over the place.

From the perspective of someone with quite a lot of software experience, it's still 100% like that on a new codebase. There's a huge learning curve and I have to read through a ton of documentation, ask a tonnnn of questions, etc.

Thanks Dave for these amazing tips. Especially the last 2 tips, regarding pausing for 2 secs and paraphrasing before passing on our thoughts, were pure gold!

If i want to become a software developer and have worked three years as a software engineer will those 3 years count as software development work experience as well, since software engineering and developing are similar?

I totally screwed up my technical interview. I choked so bad during the hackerrank exercises and ended up only answering 2/3 and both answers were wrong code wise though the algorithm and approach was right. I am so anxious during these kind of interviews. :'(

Don't worry, we've all had bad technical interviews. I choke up all the time during them.

Yeah dude, I wouldn't ruminate on mistakes. "No use crying over spilled milk" My buddy, one of the best competitive programmers in his age group in all of India, has flubbed many many interviews, and he has worked at Instagram and Two Sigma for years, in addition to Google back in India Happens to us all

How possible to be independent, Dave? It is impossible for one to know everything. All programming languages like C#, C++, JavaScript and PHP have numerous features and these features keep expanding every year, you know. Schools only teach students the very basic features of the languages and certain development languages are not covered by computing schools. I feel that being too independent can cause work stress and distaste for programming when problems nonstop arises. Programming is a team work and in order for the project to be completed on time, developers must help one another. So, I think sharing solutions to problems among employees is not wrong. Guidances should not be limited to the first 3 months only. When any problems arises, guidances from more expert developers should be given always.

Like sunlight and water and nutrition grow farms that produce visual arts and music and books grow chairpeople who invest like products and banking and engineering grow businesses that market. And like trees used to be seeds within fruits that used to be flowers businesses used to be values within products that used to be money...for a programmer painting as a variable and investment as a function is everything 24/7 beside engineering a business plan.
