Fastest way to become a software developer: 1. Understand what software development is 2. Understand the programming fundamentals (control flow statements, variables, data structures, databases, algorithms, functions, conditions, etc.) 3. Learn to properly use a programming language. Start with an easy one: PHP or javaScript (if you are more web oriented) and practice point 2. 4. Learn how to use a programming Framework. Start with an easy one based on the language you now know and practice point 3. 5. Read all you can about how to produce quality code at every step of the process of becoming a software developer. 6. Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, and practice.

I recently landed my first software developer role and would like to give my 2 cents. DO NOT get stuck in tutorial hell. Instead of the tutorials, focus on getting really good at one thing (frontend, backend, database design, etc). Build projects even if you don’t know how to start, break the project down into small problems and build each piece one at a time. The more projects you build, the better you get and more comfortable with adding complex features. If you do it this way, you can break into the industry faster, in my opinion. It took me 2 years until I “felt ready” to apply for jobs. In reality, I could’ve started applying after 6 months. I found a job for 80k within a month of searching. Moral of the story, specialize in one thing and build projects around that, then start applying. Good luck to everyone.

@@namimm3366 I am a full stack developer but I spent most of my time focusing on frontend technologies. You can’t just read a book on programming you must program often and create things. Build an application through the entire stack, everyone has an idea for an application just build it. It's an awesome video, and the points are completely relevant. But living in Africa, Nigeria specifically, the tech climate here is a little different. Employers don't want and would likely not give a job to someone who knows only a subset of the general work most developers they have already do. They want someone who can build a feature from the database right on to the client side button that needs to be clicked. So I had to learn Java, SQL, HTML and CSS before (GWT let me avoid going in too deep) before I started my first coding job. Later on I added Python and JavaScript to my toolbelt. It's really great advice, but sometimes it doesn't fit perfectly into the tech climate in some geographical locations.

How difficult would it be to move from Nigeria? I can't imagine it being very fun living there.
@jeremiahadamson76566 жыл бұрын
@@jackjohnstone7841 right now it isn't. And it's not at all easy getting out. Sometimes I wish it came down to just my skills, then I'd get a shot at leaving. But the name Nigeria scares the rest of the world. It's like a label we can't seem to take off. But we do what it takes to survive, even if what it takes is learning a bunch of languages and frameworks to earn a living.

Mikki I'm a chemistry graduate...is it possible to become a developer?
@mikki75224 жыл бұрын
@@hemaselva3894 If you have the motivation, then of course it's possible. You should enjoy programming, because it's gonna take a huge part of your life if you go that direction. With the world on the brink of an economical depression, now is the best time to learn especially since tech sector has the best chance of surviving. Learn the basic stuff first, I would recommend reading a book or watching tutorials on react (javascript, typescript), and maybe Java/Scala, Python, C++. Great perk if you can master Git as well, which will also take some time. Most important thing is to start as soon as possible with actual programming, just create a repo on Github and make a simple app in react to get yourself started. It's very tough in the beginning, but eventually your workflow will be smooth.

Recommendation : start in a different IT path. 2) Database Developer (SQL and Tableu) - better for someone without computer science degree. Duration : 2 months SQL and 1 month in Tableu. Long run : transition to software developer. 3) Administrators (AWS) - Duration : 1 year Long run : DB Developer or Software developer.

Mate, I don't think you should focus on databases only, I am a web developer and I can tell you, if you learn HTML+CSS and a JS Library such as React / Angular etc, you can go really far! Starting salaries for those roles in London are between £40K - £50K if not more. And if you like me want to make extra money, you can always take on side jobs, charge for a basic site around £1.5K and create the site within a month after working hours or weekends ;)
