Titus, our 4yr old with L3, suddenly started lining up the alphabet and numbers to 15 😮 We had no idea he knew how to do it!! He did the letters at home and then surprised us by lining up his numbers at school. His teachers were ecstatic! ❤

@@7AheadfamilyHas your level 3 autistic child with apraxia been exposed to a letter board that you or someone else holds while he points to the individual letters to get his thoughts out? If not, there are practitioners of what they call spelling to communicate outside of a center in Texas that is called the rapid prompt method at a center in Texas started and ran by a woman from the country of India who saw the way her son was communicating and learning. This works best for autistic people who are more of an auditory learner and are considered "non verbal" even though a lot of these autistic people want to be known as non speaking instead of non verbal. Please sometimes pointing to individual letters and/or numbers on a letter board can lead to typing full sentences on an app on a tablet like an iPad of some kind for example.

We have three toys that have been good for my autistic 7 year old. One is the Speak and Spell. He’s actually learned quite a few of the words and will spell them if asked. Second is the LeapFrog 2-in-1 Leaptop Touch. This one helped him learn his letters, and count to ten. (It was also great at teaching my non-autistic 4 year old.) Third is the Vtech Write and Learn Creative Center. It has helped so much with writing his letters, and shapes. (Same for my four year old) For my autistic kid, he responds better to an interactive toy getting him to do something he finds a little challenging, than to a person trying to get him to do something challenging. So these were some side door ways of getting some learning that have been effective.

I have hyperlexia, and I learned how to read by the age of 3. I could write in all styles by 4 or 5. What my parents did was get me magnetic letters for the fridge. Granted most of the time I would just line them up, but I have memories of me as young as preschool age making words and reading them

He spelled "hot". He only guessed he spelled "fire" because the picture was of a fire. Simon hasn't yet learned that the letters make up the sounds of the words, but he will pretty soon.

For a second I thought Simon had put all the fruits on the blank side of the board in the same positions they had been on the illustrated side, which would have been fairly impressive for his first time seeing it.

Weird. A sensory sensitivity I had as a child (I forgot about it for a while since it didn't come up often and haven't been able to trigger it in adulthood) was that certain shades of green and orange, when put next to each other, would create this really unpleasant sensation in my head. It's the only visual hypersensitivity I've ever had.

I don’t remember exactly how I learned how to read (Other then my therapists helping me at preschool) but I remember that I struggled a lot with writing and teachers were often frustrated with me because of it. My writing was always really big and it took me a while to be able to write well. I remember that when I was in grade 6 my writing looked like it was by a kindergartener. I’m better at writing now though and it’s actually readable.

I remember that “hot” was one of the first words that I learned to spell. When I was growing up there was a store one town over with a name that was three words long. The first word on the neon sign started with H, the second word started with O and the third word started with T, and that’s how my mother would would teach me about spelling when we sat at a stop light next to the store if we were there at night or in the evening. There was enough time for this because this was a three to five minute stop light.

I'm curious how Ezra received the Appraxia diagnosis... When I asked our ST about my son possibly having it, she informed me that Appraxia isn't measurable until more verbalizing is happening, so she could compare the letter sounds he's making. At that time he was only saying mama consistently. But Ezra doesn't say any words, yet was diagnosed with Appraxia right? I would greatly appreciate hearing your feedback about this! Thanks so much in advance ❤ love your channel ❤❤

Great Question! Our Speech Pathologist was specialized in diagnosing Appraxia in none verbal children. It took her 6 months. One big flag was how hard he tried to make the sounds, but he couldn't do it.

Here’s a fun Halloween game, when my son was learning to read, I found a small plastic witches cauldron at dollar tree and filled it with some wooden letters we had. I added a large spoon and some word cards we had from a puzzle. So he could stir and scoop out letters from the “witches brew” to make the words on the “recipe cards”.

@@7AheadfamilyIf your autistic son doesn't learn to write by hand by the time he would be in 5th grade or later, I would work on his typing skills along with uploading any worksheets he has to do in the one time fee, Snap Type Pro 2 on an iPad of some kind that can upgrade to the latest operating system, iOS 18.0.1 and allows worksheets to be uploaded and he can answer digitally in the app afterwards.
