If people stopped and looked hard at their tools and picked out the ones they used all the time and the ones they used some of the time their toolboxes wouldn't have to be so large. It really is amazing when you stop and take count of what you actually use compared to what you thought you would need and use.

Dear jimmy, I am an avid watcher of you but, Every tool has a purpose Jimmy. If you think about it, there is always that one type of vehicle that someone made a tool for. I use ball torx religiously on diesels. I refuse to waste my time trying to get tools to fit. I need a one and done, this tool will get the job done, right? But maybe the rule should be don't buy the set. Just buy as you go. What do you think?
@JimmyMakingitwork

Yeah, like most tools, they will serve a purpose at some point. Just want people to think it thru and buy more important tools first based on their own needs.

I too have bought tools which I thought would be nice to have. Now they sit in a drawer taking up space. I thought about getting rid of them but then I would probably just buy some other gadget that would be sitting there talking up space. It’s what mechanics do!! Great vid Jimmy

Jimmy this video) I've got these tools I haven't used in a year or so. Another mechanic) I like having tools that could come in handy to get the job done. Jimmy next video) if you don't use a tool at lest a few times a week save save your money. Just barrow them from the other mechanic in the shop. Just make sure you brake the tool, leave the tool greasy, and don't return to the owner when your done❗🤣

I feel like alot of hand tools don’t get as used like they used to years ago because of all the pneumatic and electric power tools and ratchets. They seem to make the job much easier. I haven’t seen one mechanic video with someone not owing a Milwaukee 3/8 electric ratchet or snap on etc. then you have the swivel sockets that do wonders so i see a lot of basic tools not being used much anymore lol. I see guys at my work always using a ratchet wrench to break torque even though that’s not what’s it’s meant to do but hey to each there own. Is still use my regular wrenches on a daily. 😂

I got 50% snap on stuff in college. I maxed out the purchase limit but I haven’t used 90% of the tools. Buttttttt I’m definitely one of those guys that uses the “id rather have it and not need it” excuse 🤣 I partially blame one of my professors as he was a massive snap on fanatic. I think he encouraged me to go with all snap on. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll use everything at some point 🤣

I bought a set of Genius SAE ball hex sockets last year. I didn't need them because I'm in England, and I cannot remember the last time I worked on anything that was not metric....there was just a gap in my toolkit and they were cheap. I was able to acquire the rbrt Foreign object removal tool set at reduced price from my dealer. We both later found out that the grip edge set includes left handed drill bits that match the rbrt set. However, Mac does not have access to these. Nonetheless, ive been able to use the tools when certain apprentices have busted oil pressure gauge attachments within the engine block. Nice to have solutions for others' mistakes.

I bought a Snap On metric low clearance socket set. It comes in a blow molded case and has a 5/8 ratcheting wrench with hard plastic handle. The sockets are retained in the ratcheting wrench with an o-ring. I bought it over 20 years ago and I used it once. The retaining o-rings are dry rotting. Looked like a good tool to have at the time of purchase.

Aye Jimmay! I used to pick locks quite a bit for my previous career. That set looks nice, but it does take some practice to use them. Unless you’re trying to unlock a gas cap, or a glove box they wouldn’t be super useful for a mechanic. It would be easier to use wedges and a rod. I have ball end sae hex bits from icon and I don’t like those, even with just a slight angle they seem to round fasteners. Maybe I’ll try the gear wrench.

I have to say that I've never considered buying a lock pick set. Of course, someone else made it for Matco. Since Matco only makes some of their toolboxes and none of their tools. I've used my VIM ratchet adapter more than a few times as a mini ratchet, a crowfoot, and stress reliever. I like it. The snap on oil pressure switch crowfoot is handy on some Chryslers. I've used the VIM made ball torx bit set on everything from TPMS sensors, to ignition switches. It's a great little set. I think if you're in the rust belt or deal with a lot of broken fasteners, the RBRT series can be a lifesaver. Eric O has used them in more than a few of his videos but, if you don't deal with rust or broken stuff, they might not be worth their price. aside from the lock pick set, your selections fall under the category of, it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Thanks for sharing, hang in there, gravy's coming. Now, row faster.

I've used the gas cap pick twice that it did work and many times it did not. It came in a slim jim kit I bought in the 80's. How about the tool you needed once and you bought it to never need it again ?? Or the one you needed and made do without and then bought it only to let it collect dust in the back drawer of your box for 20 years??? If you do this very long, you tend to buy tools that LOOK like they would solve a problem that may never occur. Better to have it when you need it than need it and not have it. I bought the 1/4 drive blend door trick ratchet because I do a lot of that kind of work, but still have not used it yet. BUT. BOY HOWDY IF I NEED IT I GOT IT. That's if I can find it......Know what I mean ????

Very good question. I work more to build something for my family and improve our standard of living. It's voluntary and we are doing well, I like feeling like I've gotten something done each day and take time off when I think I need to. Or his shops owners are cutting costs to hire less skilled mechanics. Which is a terrible long term plan. He should have a plan to open his own shop I'd assume, but he needs the job for content at this point they feed each other.

c'mon!!! they wouldnt make a tool if you didnt need it....right? RIGHT? :) those tools companies know all about us guys who want to be ready for anything and have everything. if they made a polished chrome turd and called it a "hose block" or "vacuum helper" and put it a black box with some fuzzy stuff with a cool logo on the front and sell it on the tool truck or a tool store....some of us would by it for, you know, just in case. ive bought a few of those "wonder tools"....as in wonder what i bought them for but ended up using them when they were the only thing that would have worked. as a home gamer, ive slowed down on buying regular tools and put my effort into the specialty tools for suspension, pullers, brake tools and such. with the way things are going, i want to be ready to do everything i can myself. remember people, if its f*cked, you cant f*ck it anymore by trying to fix it yourself and every tool has a hammer side.
