Joel, BC Canadian here. The reason the Highway of Tears attracts so many evil people is pretty simple. Its an utterly empty wasteland. You can go for miles without seeing another car during certain times. It's so solitary it's alarming, so they have little fear of getting caught. They're essentially alone with their victims without any fear of interruption.

You forgot to mention the pervasive racism, sexism and violent misogyny perpetrated by mostly non-indigenous men against first nations women and girls. The vast and uninhabited area just explains how it can be done not why. They know they won't be caught because of jurisdictional issues and the lack of interest in pursuing justice in these cases, fueling impunity.

The way indigenous people of our country have been treated and continue to be due to systemic racism is disgusting. We have a long way to go to make things right. The Highway of Tears is such a horrifying reality that the RCMP have allowed to occur. White people make me feel like we were the least civilized of all with our ancestors' with our plundering of people and their lands for the profit of a monarchy that is still hiding racism.
@Class_Wars
@Class_Wars 3 жыл бұрын
I am First Nations and unfortunately the highway of tears isn't the only place that happens but it is the biggest place it happens and it's definitely a consistent stream of happenings down there. I was assaulted in my hometown and when I told them that the man said he had a preference for her first Nations women and that I was First Nations they didn't look into it. It's really sad and it can be very scary sometimes. While I was being assaulted I wondered if anybody knew where I was I wondered if anybody would actually look for me (because my friend's uncle had just been murdered on our reservation and the cops didn't do anything about it and got mad at the people in the reservation for making their own search party) I was wondering if anybody would care what my mother would think. It's really sad that these are realities but it is.
@Class_Wars

@@demisavage77 thank you for saying that I really appreciate it I feel like I don't hear that a lot.
@demisavage77
@demisavage77 3 жыл бұрын
@@Class_Wars I'm so sorry you had to go through that. As a survivor of domestic violence and another assault I can emphasize with you. For different reasons I could not go to law enforcement. I think it's absolutely inhumane that we(white people) continue to allow systemic racism. Residential schools, churches, social workers, CAS in Canada is notorious for its chronic blatant racism. We have created such an unbalanced, unjust system in a country we stole. I recently came to understand why so many people fall susceptible to conspiracy theories and far right politics. I think it may be why many continue to teach hate in their families, religious groups and such. It's no excuse. There is no excuse. Women of colour have the least equality of all. Which also translates to they are the most vulnerable to injustices. Add to that the government treatment and society's stereotypical and racist views, I simply cannot imagine how much pain and fear you have survived. It's my responsibility as a mother and a decent human being to keep learning, supporting your voice and to push for change. History is just beginning to be taught in facts and not just by those who have been the oppressors. We have allowed the extinction of peoples whose ways of life is far more peaceful and sustainable to the life of the planet than our industrial pillaging since we began conquering. I honestly feel that people who sit in office, or in any law enforcement capacity and say systemic racism does not exist must be racist. If those of us with voices don't speak loud enough for those whose voices have been historically discounted, than we aren't trying hard enough. Scientists now are looking at whether trauma can be found in changes to DNA, so after centuries of our white privilege, I can only imagine the imprint on our children and our earth that has been made. Basic physics states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, so we must actively change that energy of hate and oppression into the energy of love and compassion. No one should accept being tolerated, each life born deserves to be celebrated and cherished. x

It's so weird hearing Prince George be talked about, I was born and raised there. I know someone who was hitchhiking from PG to Terrace and may have had a run in with the Hwy 16 killer, or one of them (she was able to get away from him and lived. The story she told was straight out of a horror movie, but she never went to the cops because she was a teen runaway). I also have a family friend who may have been one of Picktons victims, unfortunately we will never know but she was homeless living in the Vancouver area around that time and went missing.. Also, I know Cody Legebokoff's roommate. She lived upstairs to him and he killed a woman in his place.

as someone who lives on the stretch of highway 16 and indigenous, I really appreciate you telling this story. there hasn’t really been a lot of investigation or coverage of this. there has been close to no justification or any type of closure for all of those family’s of those missing and murdered indigenous women, and there most likely will never be.

Not trying to sound rude, but I have a question. Since killings of First Nations women is so prevalent in that area, why do they not stay away from that area or take protection or something?
@kaitc9590
@kaitc9590 3 жыл бұрын
@@deborahyoung1873 the area is a whole highway, it’s very unavoidable for the families that live on the reserves along the highway which is quite a few. most of the natives along here do not have the money to just get up and leave from where they are. also most of these murders and kidnappings had happened before everyone had cell phones. the area around here did not have things like buses or anything that can be found in bigger cities like vancouver, the places are so small they’re called “villages”, the villages along the highway of tears are the type you would see when driving to another city and don’t pay any attention to. people had to hitchhike to get to town, go to work, and just go anywhere because a lot of houses are out of town and there were no ways of transportation besides hitchhiking, most families did not have cars because they can’t make enough money for that because all of these small towns don’t have the greatest jobs to stick around and also since they’re so small it’s hard to get employment because there’s so many people living and working or trying to find a job in these small areas.

I had never heard of this, and im an extreme true crime addict. I am aware of the same issue with Native Americans on the Nevada reservations, but never even heard a whisper of this. Thats so awful. It seems indigenous women are targets all over as the perpetrators assume no one cares, and in a sense, they are right. The reason it's being ignored is because no one knows... I dont agree with those saying, "don't live there or take precautions." These women and girls often can't just pick up and leave- theyre born where they're born, may not have funds to move, or may have family ties to what is their home. I guarantee they do take precautions, but things still happen. Women here take precautions- I have my concealed carry and home defense weapon, but I still was in 2 home invasions with multiple stalkers (never bothered me, and I had some really good fun with the home invasion perps). Theres no way to blame the girls as the other commenters imply. That's like when we came to America and destroyed the natives, us blaming them for existing and saying, "hey they could have left vs been killed by genocide. They chose to stay in their home so its their fault." That's absurd. Its an ignorant point of view only heald by those who have no ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and has never been in a situation with no options. How do you pick up and leave when you have no funds to do so? You are a native living paycheck to paycheck with generations of family there... they stay, yes, and they have every right to as well as no option but to. Im sorry, im generally on the killers side, but these situations of native targeting upset me. It upsets me just as much to see ignorance and downplaying to it. Im a monster myself. I may be a 'pretty lil redhead' and I can see it from all angles, and the killers are absolutely using that ignorant attitude of many to their benefit. Those who think the way of the other comments is why they do what they do, and it works. And yes, thats me in my pic... I have been targeted many times by creepers due to appearance, but only three times by true criminals/predators. They made a very wrong deduction by sizing me up as a 100lb innocent girl. When my balcony door shattered I heard the stalker coming in and already had my gun trained on him. I had a really fun night with would be rapist dude. Before you ask, no he didn't die, but he left an hour later with wet pants and a lesson learned. I was in law school then though, I doubt given the same situation id have allowed him to jump the 3 stories he'd climbed to originally break in. The second actually is hilarious because its on par with so many of these let's read stories of stalkers... except, I married mine because it turned out he was just as twisted as me. The third was a robbery attempt where the men came up against both of us armed. They ran like hell fire was chasing them. It was so satisfying in every instance. I know how all sides think and what they're looking for... in the first situation, id heard the man following me and denied him cat calling me, so I knew his goal was not to rob me as a broke law major in a small apt, the second I saw a kindred spirit, and the third was some men seeing a big house and wanting money not knowing what waited inside. There are so many sides to each situation, so its unfair to make brash judgments.

Just wanted to let you know bro that I love your story’s and I listen to them every night before bed . Please don’t stop 🙏🏻🙏🏻 ❤️ I love that yours are long enough so that I can fall asleep to them without it ending after 12 minutes like some people’s. Also, your narrator voice is perfect for these kind of story’s.

Hey from Canada! I especially remember the Pickton case because 2 of the victims were Brenda and Marni. One of my best friends is named Marni.

@@demisavage77 Aye sounds like "I". Such as "Aye Mate" like a pirate would. We Canadians aren't Pirates. We say eh that sounds like the letter A. "You're going to stop by and see me tonight, eh?" Or "Eh, what's up? Haven't seen you in a while" or if you are angry about something you may say "Fck it eh!" Or "Eh! What the Fck" when trying to get the attention of a person who pissed you off. So eh, is not always used as a question, it can be used as an exclamation or even as a proclamation of happiness "eh you it's great to see you" . Yep you can use the word in many ways but Americans and other non-Canadians still seem to always mangle its use. Lol

@@foxyandlucy6392 unless you come from European background and aye is an agreeing term, that is not pronounced like a pirate. I find that offensive to my culture and family whom are in and from Scotland. As a Scottish Canadian our accents and dialect is a wee bit different, but we do not speak like pirates. It's was a satirical comment.

As I agree that non-Canadians mangle it, I do not take what you say personally offensive. Just those of us with mixed cultures may find their ayes compared to pirates as such. I apologize for my previous snarky reply, I'm in a great deal of pain today do to a chronic disease and my fuse does blow prematurely during these times. I've birthed 3 children and that was a walk in the park compared to my body's assault on my existence today. Again sorry, x

I wrote a high school paper in one of my classes on the Inuit Eskimos. This was prior to when the Internet became available. Interesting people w/sketches of their clothing & weapons I got an "A" on it. Would have loved to have known this interesting meet up story to have added it to my paper. I have heard before of the men trapped on King William Island, but never knew they met up w/the Inuit Eskimos & their reactions, as well as the remaining dead bodies having been left at an Inuit campsite. Very isolated as u mentioned. Great stories.
