What’s the worst type of cyclist you’ve ever ridden with? 👀🚴

The person who always breaks away from the group... As I am usually second wheel or at the front, it's usually up to me to do a big Z4- Z5 effort to bring that person back. Feel like a shepherd dog sometimes. The group ride ain't the TDF... there's no medal in reaching the end point first.

A group I used to ride with had a few guys who were pretty undisciplined and would start messing around. I enjoy having some fun while riding, but these guys would feed off of one another and would start running red lights and antagonizing drivers. Eventually we would just let them disappear up the road and do our own ride. Of course, there was one of them who would frequently comment afterwards how he had "smashed (us) on that ride", not realizing that we had no intention of catching him.

The worst I came across was a rider in my wifes riding group. This guy talked shit constantly, called the other riders slugs, and never shutup about how he's the fastest. I was a pro rider a few years back, and my wife told me about this guy. So, I went with her on the group ride while I was vacation. (I usually work during their rides) Dude shows up and says, "Hey slugs, ready to watch how a good rider does it?" He then looks at me and says, "Oh, a newb, try not to get dropped, ok? This group is slow enough." A couple of miles into the ride was the first big hill, and the dude says, "How about you slugs try and keep up this time!" He then stood up and accelerated. My wife looked at me and said, "Ok, now." I took off like a shot. Each pedal stroke was lifting my front tire off the ground, sprinting for all I was worth, with some adrenaline helping fuel me. I caught and passed him like he was standing still, and yelled "ON YOUR LEFT" as I passed him. I heard a "WTF!" as I continued up the hill. I did a track stand waiting for the group at the top of the hill, my wife rode up to me with the biggest smile on her face. We didn't hear anything else out of the dudes mouth that day. Being a fast rider is great, but don't put people down for being slower, you're just being an ass.

The new guy that have the most expensive bike money can buy but didn't buy and bring spare tube/pump/repair kit even if they ride on a mountain in the middle and nowhere and have a puncture and of course don't know how to fix a puncture. There was this guy, pretty new cyclist that bought a Dogma F. He had a puncture in the mountain, didn't bring anything. Me and my friend wanted to give him a spare tube but of course the guy was riding super deep rims wheels (because it's the new cool as he was told in the shop) and of course our spare tubes hadn't long valves that can fit his wheels. When we took off the tire from the rims, of course the guy was riding TPU tube (he wasn't even aware of what is it) that need specific repair kit that we don't have. We had so much fun during this ride!

One of my favorite group rides is this out and back that lets everyone go at their own pace on the same route for about 45 min so they then have 45 min to get back to the start making for a 1.5 hour ride where everyone pushes themselves as much as they want. Really cuts down on the talk about what equipment everyone "needs" and the complaining about getting dropped/going too slow. Everyone ends back the start and around the same time with the workout they wanted in this pattern.

The worst type of riders to ride with are the roadies that have out priced the rest of us and show it. You know the type, they don't say hello or good morning if your bike and kit are sub $15 000. I've been the rider who's faster than everyone else. When it occurs, I just thank the group leader for the ride and dismiss myself to ride ahead at my pace. As I'm then no longer part of the group, I'm no longer affecting the group. I've also been the rider who dropped back to collect, encourage, and ultimately stay with a dropped rider.

If one wants to stay in the group but feels especially energetic that day, is it considered to be rude to occasionally take off for a few minutes then slow down or stop to let the group catch up, with the understanding that you're not trying to increase the group's pace or put pressure on others but just taking off now and then because you can, so long as you make this clear?

A young lady came out on a group ride and struggled in too high a gear, on every hill. I have to make a conscious effort not to be the person dishing out the non-stop advice but at the coffee stop, I did mention that it's no shame to use the smaller ring. She admitted she'd love to but didn't know how. Her return journey was a bit more enjoyable for her.

Heh, I once accidentally did this to another rider, thankfully just spit and not snot, while riding by myself doing loops in the park with few riders around and not noticing that someone was either riding my wheel or coming up behind me right in my "spit spray zone". This was way way way before covid so no worries there, but I did feel bad about it and profusely apologized, but then it's not always possible or necessary to be fully aware of everyone around you in a closed loop without many riders around. Never did it again as I now always look before loogieng.

I apologized to her for how he yelled because it was very uncalled for and we were riding slow anyway, plus she wasnt even walking she had stopped. Anyway I’ve had some of my worse rides with people who yell at every single car/driver in their way while they themselves don’t even ride perfect 😅

Some cyclists get impressed with themselves when they reach a certain amount of fitness, and make it a rule to bully slower riders. If your manner of talking to your fellow rider would be unacceptable in normal everyday life, then it's no more acceptable on a ride just because you happen to have a few more years experience on a bike.

I don't know about the slow cyclist being that bad. Riding with faster groups has been great for my training, pushes me to put more effort than I would have if I were riding alone, etc. Granted I tell the group beforehand that I am slow, I expect to be dropped, and I don't expect for them to wait for me...if they want to wait, they most certainly can but I don't care either way. My biggest issue is that slow, D-paced group rides (in my area at least) only go out for 15 - 20 mile rides. I may ride slow, but I'd prefer to go further. My long rides are typically 60+ miles on the weekend, with an average of 12mph. If I do a group ride, I usually chose a faster group because their routes go further, but I know I won't be able to keep up.

A Gawker is the worst. We had a guy that would rotate to the front of the pace line and ride mostly at the pace, but if he saw something, a cow, a horse, a duck, he would spin his head and stop pedaling. I twitched my bike off his wheel just barely missing him. I expressed my displeasure and his response was 'I thought everyone would want to see'. Never rode near him afterwards.

I went on a ride with someone over the summer and it didn't take long for me to decide i'd never invite them again. They don't ride much, so they took a while to fix a flat they didn't know they had. They wanted to start later than I wanted to, to which I obliged, and they were still late. And I have not even gotten to the reason yet. Once we were off, he started to cross streets as if he owned the road. We have a path away from the road that follows a creek, with intersections at every half mile or so, and this guy would just go into the road to try to get behind a car that was coming, instead of just waiting for it to pass. It confused the shit out of some drivers, and rightfully so. Not only was it dangerous to ride with him, it was embarrassing. No helmet, earbuds. My goodness. Oh and he stopped at the gas station and I never do.

He did a double century? (and why isn't it on Strava? because his computer battery died) Ridden a 5 day stage race? He's done the Tour de France. Got a new, upgraded bike? He's had that one but it got stolen. If he gets dropped will come up with some lame excuse like "my coach wants me doing a recovery ride today". He's the absolute WORST?

Worst Riding Partner: I was riding with a friend and we were going north on a relatively flat section of hwy 1 in Marin County; I was in the front doing a pull and giving him a long rest and expecting the same in return. Instead, when i pulled off he jumped all over me and sped off leaving me in the dust! I was absolutely livid but there was naught I could do since I was rather tired. I bided my time and recharged my energy stores and slowly crept back to his wheel (this took miles to do); I caught him at the bottom of a hill and, using the dark side of the force, left him in my wake and kept the pressure on for the rest of the 25 miles back to our cars. I had my bike packed in my car and a change of clothes on when he rode up, in time for me to wave bye bye (we're still best of friends - but I never let him forget that).

I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Having moved here from the Denver are I can say unequivocally that the motorists here are INFINITELY more conscientious, polite and careful than the drivers in Denver. Much to my surprise. Furthermore, the roads are incredibly twisty, windy and up and down. With little to no shoulder whatsoever. In the twelve years I have lived here I have had ZERO run ins and only a could close calls. Usually, they go completely across the road and often slow down as they do. I have never been honked at! In Colorado that was a daily or at least weekly occurrence. Where roads are dead straight for the most part and have 4 ft bike lanes everywhere. Just sayin' - MAJOR SHOUT OUT FOR PHILLY MOTORISTS! THANK YOU!

The worst type of cyclist, at least for me, is the small dynamo, someone light for whom climbing is relatively easy, someone who attacks and drops the group on every climb. This person not only forces the group to work harder on the climb but not be able to recover on use the descents as they are catching up. As well, this person likes to pull on the flats, often taking long turns up front, but because of their small stature, they offer less of a benefit to those of us who are larger and heavier. This isn’t someone riding hard and always pushing the group, it’s someone who doesn’t adjust their riding style for the group. It would be like Vinegaard leading a hilly group ride of sprinters without consideration.

Not true. Scientific studies have shown that the buffer area in front of an object (person or vehicle) actually does push the object in front a bit... You go faster with two people than one, even if the one behind never takes a pull. This was not a case of my not knowing how to do it, throwing off anyone's rhythm or endangering anyone. Re. "Who are the worst people to cycle with?" As a rule of thumb, you're pretty safe if you avoid riding with "road cyclist". Specifically, those who think being a "cyclist" is an actual identity. And the subset who run tubeless tyres. By definition they're ridiculous.

I have much sympathy for Hank being out of proportion. After Si's vid on the new Canyon gravel bike last week I put my details in to their size calculator and broke it. They don't make a bike that fits someone who is 5'11"/180cm tall but with 29"/73cm legs apparently. Just as well I can't afford a Grail anyway! 🤣

The fanatic cycle campaigner. Years ago I tried to join a local CTC. This insane woman was instantly in may face from the first ride. First I got yelled at for wearing a high viz jacket, it's all I has at the time, then I was ordered to put her CTC stickers on my bike and that I need to 'pull my weight' by attending a reclaim the roads demonstration through the town and so on and so on. This local CTC was dead withing a year, she drove everyone into the ground.

That would be the mansplainer, as pointed out by Si. Mansplaining comes from joining "man's" and the end of "explaining", as a term coined to describe a man, as this is usually a masculine trait, that goes to great lengths to explain things to others that otherwise are quite self evident and might already be known to their interlocutors, usually without the interlocutors having asked for an explanation in the first place. The origins of mansplaining can be traced to...

Not sure what to say. You could have taken the approach of “The 6 reasons groups may not want to ride with you” which is a helpful positive approach versus this segment, which essentially says “how to rationalize why you don’t ride with ‘those people’”. My roommate [67 years old] laughed at parts of the video, I was more like WTF? Hence this comment. Could have this been helpful and not dark? Ya, it could have been. Val

I do nearly all of my cycling with my wife - its brilliant and I wouldn't want to change it. So she's clearly the worst type of cyclist to ride with, but also the best! Like Alex and Chloe we were really excited to do a big event together (IM 70.3 - I know triathletes eh?) - the best bit of the entire event was seeing her still riding when the road double backed and knowing she had passed all the cut off points and would finish the event.

The worst rider is the one who downplays others bikes. Just because you can afford to ride a 5 figure bike doesn’t mean you can insult or be rude to others who CHOOSE not to have a high end bike or simply cannot afford it. #enjoythebike

Ive been using heat-shrink tubing on cable ends forever, thought it was just normal ^^
@jbarner13
@jbarner13 10 ай бұрын
Keeping the cable from fraying is not the primary reason for cable ends, more important is safety. Even an unfrayed cable has the potential to create a puncture wound. Since most cable ends are too large in diameter anyway, you might consider using both heat shrink and crimped ends. I solder my cables and then attach aluminum ends.You need to use silver solder with stainless cables, but it allows the end to be attached more securely and still not crush the cable, which increases the tendency to fray.

I'm the guy who gets dropped. I go along to my local club and often ride with the faster group. I know I'll get dropped, they know I'll get dropped but each week my aim is go further on the ride before getting dropped. I ride the route they do afterwards and end up back to the rugby club for 'refreshments'. They couldn't be more encouraging - I think it depends on the group you ride with. If they do get frustrated with me, they obviously all vent in the group up ahead than to my face!!!
