What does it mean to be “gifted”? Like many, you may think it’s having an exceptionally high IQ or being a child prodigy. And while it’s true that people who fall under these categories can be considered gifted, it’s also time you realize that there are actually many different types of giftedness that tend to get overlooked and undervalued. Curious to know which type you are? Here are the 6 types of gifted people.

Thank you for sharing this it makes me feel more confident in my future. I’m glad that you could find a way to succeed in something you truly enjoy. I think I’m number 1 and 5. I’ve always worked hard and was pressured to get really good grades. I do well in school but I also have a very hard time processing and getting things done in time so it takes much more effort for me to get things done. I am also an artistic and creative person.

My school district has a pretty nice gifted and talented program. I’ve been in said program since the 5th grade. Honestly, being gifted isn’t always that great. Everyone assumes you are smart, they expect too much from you, and literally almost every gifted pier of mine is struggling from some sort of mental illness.
@Griffith307
@Griffith307 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not gonna say this to put down anyone but the GT program is dumb af. In my school in elementary they literally chose random students with good attendance and decent grades to take their mediocre test meanwhile making students do the most dumbest projects that were complicated due to the absurdity of it. Those who survived being GT students have my respects because honestly the title isn't worth the huge amount of projects they had to do and tests.

At my previous school there was no talented kids program. It worked like this, different groups, those who know this or at the same level in reading, usually 3-5 groups, everyone was taught differently depending on how they learn what they know and what they need to improve. I asked why our school teaches differently, knowing other schools don't show as much support, and why they don't grade our work with Fs and As. Their response? It's *unfair*. That is why I love that school, even when there was a new principal, things stay the same.
@zacharyhatfield4074
@zacharyhatfield4074 2 жыл бұрын
@@Griffith307 our program is different. Everyone is required to take a “CoGat” test or something like that. It classifies students as Gifted and Talented. As far as I know it’s actually pretty accurate. I didn’t get in the program through the test, my 5th grade teacher recommended me for the program because i excelled in every area. Our program focuses more on developing our social-emotional skills as well as leadership.
@Griffith307
@Griffith307 2 жыл бұрын
@@zacharyhatfield4074 I think what failed about the program here is that it was glorified as if it would've made prestigious or above your peers. Instead of attracting those who are actually smart it attracted egomaniacs instead. My advanced class was took the test and we all passed with high 90s or high 80s it really didn't test anything out or maybe we are already used to being tested weekly, monthly, and yearly to pass to the next grade.

Seeing the things stated for type 2, I believe that would be the one I could relate to the most, however instead of speaking for myself, I'd like to speak for people in general, gifted or not, for the statements made my mind click and pop out some information of which I think is important and should be known. The thing about schools is that even though their limits may not appear to be large at all, they can have extreme effects on people, schools should not force students to act one way, and instead should embrace working differently. Just because somebody doesn't do the work the same way does not mean they don't do the work properly, as long as it gets the same level of results, it should actually be rewarded for finding additional ways of accomplishment that could allow people to do that work efficiently but also comfortably, because it could increase the rate of work and also benefit everybody.

Failed (or "fallen") type 1 here...the description was spot on, I felt personally called out. Breezed through school and university, but always wished I were more socially adept. At some point around the time I started uni I started to cringe every time someone complimented me on my intelligence, basically because it was the only thing I ever got complimented on and I didn't value it as much as things like charisma, passion, or dedication. And five years after graduating I'm still dependent on my parents because of severe mental health issues :/ And honestly I hadn't even connected the dots with the lack of creativity. I always just assumed I was naturally uncreative, but I guess growing up with an obsession with getting everything perfect probably shaped my mind to be one that rejects things that are different, even if as an adult I'm no longer a perfectionist
@davidgriffiths7696

I was once slavishly perfectionist but construction and design efforts trained me to prefer compromise between a realistic range of priorities and effort:reward. This need not exclude creativity and excellence.

Yeah, same for me, I'm 99% sure I have ADHD, even though I'm not diagnosed. I'm well above average intelligence, and I've always had smart friends, and not so many. Because of my ADHD, I have always underperformed in school, and I have never been seen as smart. Not have I only had struggles to finnish writing assignments, I have never had any motivation to do things I don't want to do in school.

As someone with ADD (Diagnosed just last year) who was never diagnosed younger because 'good in math' and was a Type 1 in academics and Type 3 in music and art, then had emotions disregarded as acting out and being disrespectful and became Type 2 and 4, yeah this is correct. (would this have given off type 5 vibes with the fact focusing was mostly thrown out the window if happiness wasn't there, dissociating happened constantly if focusing was out the window, and those things that did bring happiness usually weren't what people wanted? Maybe. Who knows.) We need to realize that people that are gifted are still human, and still should be treated like any person should, with respect and love. For those that are Type 1, we need to realize that they don't need to always be number 1 and be excellent in everything, but only that we support them and make them feel supported in what they do. Academically Gifted, Highly Academically Gifted, or however they call the 'gifted' kids of your schools either are happy because they take breaks and aren't pressured by others, or will eventually breakdown and have a stress episode because they can't take the pressure and aren't allowed to express anything that isn't working hard on what they're good at. Type 2's need to be more understood and have support. They may not conform, but that's alright. We're a changing society and we should be able to adapt to others and how they work. We need to understand that not everyone will colour within our lines, but that those that colour outside the lines may also add to the picture elsewhere. Type 3's shouldn't be pushed to show others their talents but encouraged to pursue their talents, even if that means not telling anyone else until they are ready. Whether it's academics, the arts of music or visual arts, athletics, or just anything, they shouldn't be pressured to show off, and shouldn't be taught that they need to. They should be taught to follow their dreams. With Type 4's, we need to realize that if they have anger issues, they're angry for a reason, and we should try to see why. We can't just label them with 'anger issues' and then go and look over the fact that they are actually pretty academically gifted, like Type 1s. (To understand this more, think of Bakugou Katsuki from BNHA. A good student academically, but he's quite prone to his anger because that's all people see from him instead of his achievements.) Type 5's need more attention to the fact that they are gifted, they just need a bit of time, patience, and help to understand what they are doing. They may be able to solve a complex problem or know the answer to a physics question, it just takes them a bit of time to understand, and we need to have the patience to wait and let them figure it out, as well as helping them along the way if they get stuck. Take, well, the person writing this comment. It's hard to focus on a question and answer it because either the focus is elsewhere because the question is boring, or the question keeps making other focuses pop up and the focus is elsewhere. Eventually, the question will get answered. Play some music, keep the hype, and it will get answered soon. Type 6's actually have respect, as mentioned, because, like Type 1's, they excel, but instead of just normally keeping the pressure on and having to maintain everything to not let people down, they actually forget to make relations with people. Now, it's fine if everyone around them is critical of hard-working people like Type 1's and similar people, but if there are some people that support them, they need to remember that those people support them and to keep in contact because eventually, that confidence is gonna become narcissism or seen as it if Type 6's don't make friends. As a non-type 6, yet somehow everything else, trying to actually take the first step and become their friend by talking about their interests and making connection's with one's own interests is helpful for both sides. --- that was a lot, sorry for rambling on with text... it was just the hyperfocused topic on mind. - T

I relate to the drop-out type the most. I don't really get noticed for academic things. I'm more centered around physical and extra-curricular stuff, but I do care about my academia too. It's just not my strong suit. However, I'm pretty much a mix of athleticism and academia and I embrace this. Being that way has its perks.

I’m an American student in the GT (Gifted and Talented) program. I feel like i identify most with number 5, because I have really bad anxiety and it gets difficult to focus on certain tasks, even when I’m not anxious. I feel like gifted kids are sometimes criticized because others think that they are “smarter”, and that’s not true. We’re not smarter than others, our brains just work differently, and in my case, faster than the students in “normal” classrooms.

somehow, im good at school and stuff, so i relate the most to the first one. However, it’s mainly because my parents push me - sometimes it feels like too far… but when i get good grades, people automatically expect me to get them *all* the time - and I don’t! People often compare me to them when i get a medium grade or a ‘low’ one, and im super happy for them, but i feel really upset that im just labelled as the ‘nerd’ and just someone who can copy from me in work and exams.

Forget those who see just a show and think you're the only one who does what you do. That's fantastic and life-long, as you can use what you learn on other topics.

This video has helped me become aware of type 4's more. Come to think of it, I've noticed some type 4s growing up in school, even in the early grades. I always thought that their creativity and giftedness was important and beautiful (just like that of everyone!), but I felt for them because I could see and feel their creative energy, yet seeing them be turned down or away by teachers was troubling to me on their behalf. I seriously hope they have found their outlet today, and the same with everyone of course! I personally relate to both type 1 and 6 the most I believe.

I kinda relate with type 2 when I was a kid I was in public school and I was kinda known as the “delinquent kid” I was strange and a lot of kids bullied me and I ended up getting in a lot of fights. As I got older I changed to homeschooling and my grades started slipping, I haven’t ever really found school fun. Certain teachers have gotten me engaged but must bore me or make me feel stupid, the only classes I enjoy are the ones where I can be creative and express my writing. But I often don’t get to do that, I feel bad because I want to learn but I always seem to not pay attention.

Whoa… this is a little spooky, as the whole video is like a simplified take on my entire progression through school (and jabs a tiny bit at uncomfortable memories in each stage). This means I’ve been each of these archetypes at some point or another, making it difficult to pinpoint which of them is most “like me” (though I’m not exactly the self-labelling type anyway). If I had to choose, I’d say 6 is the most seamless match with who I am today, though there are residual traces of the first five that don’t exactly make it an even thing (and there’s still a _lot_ of work ahead in terms of self-identity and rebuilding my life… 😅).

Type 2, type 4, type 5, and type 6 but I did not ever realize that others did not think like me. I knew I was smart and others struggled when I found it easy but I never fully figured out everything because I stopped talking to people mostly when i was young. I delt with dislexia on my own that was hard. Last month someone told me that being able to have the mental imaging and voice i have is not normal and that some people can not even picture an apple in their minds eye. I started watching your videos thank you for making them. I took my first IQ test the other week just some random online one that was not timed or maybe the score gets affected by the time you take not sure made a 138. Pretty sure these all are different and scores can fluctuate. So not going to hold much to it especially since I have done almost no real progress intellectually since I graduated except videos and information collecting. Can read a 500 page book in less than a day and i do not even read anymore. Reading was the escape place so I did not really need it anymore. It's like watching a movie for me I give the characters all their own voices and remember who sounded like what. Books written by discrptive authors are the best. It is very strange for me right now and it feels like a giant puzzle piece I never saw got put in the middle. I understand a lot of things I did not before and why people did not like me when I tried to help them. I still have issues with interacting because I am also somehow an introvert and extrovert at the same time. Also ADHD still got it but it is much more managable now.

From my experience, as a teenager myself, it'll be harder for someone multi-talented. I am always good in what I do or what I start, but this means harder to choose what to do with your Life, and it includes more unconscious pressure. E.g. you're always seen as science kid so when you chose socials people would see you differently and you feel like somehow an outcast?? I'm not mentioning anyone, but I admit that my gift is, although being an average, to make money from what I just enjoy (currently not much but exceeding the expected amount). Scores doesn't always be priority except for getting out of the country. Don't worry too much when you're not like the others. Trust the process. Have a great day.

I’m a double label also know as a twice exceptional. Growing up with ADHD that has dyscalculia it was always masked and I always thought I was stupid. Once I moved to my aunt’s house and got the attention/help I required, I was able to excel academically and in my artistic abilities that were left undetected (As I was untreated for a long time). As the memes say about ex gifted children, once I moved to the Uk, my grades plummeted and it became hard. Even with the study habits I build in Spain, I didn’t have anyone to hold me accountable as so I quit. (Also wasn’t in my meds at the time) To not be depressing ending to my story.. it did take me a while to find my path again to what I would like to do as an adult. After a long scenic route, by the time my friends finished university, I instead; was still in the in-between before heading to there(university) trying to get my grades up from high school so I can go to university as an aerospace engineer. So far is going great, apart from the perfectionism trying to get highest scores etc..

Your premise is inaccurate. We all receive experience everyday. It would be exceedingly difficult to not receive experience. Second, knowledge is not necessarily a result of experience. There is an old adage that captures this pretty well. "Some people have 20 years of experience in their field ; others have one year of experience 20 times" Lastly, how does one not accept their existence? I have never met anyone who did not believe they existed. That , in and of itself is not proof that there isn't a person out there somewhere that really does not believe they exist but come on, I think you can do better than this.

We all are created equal and if you exist with an unknown purpose that will one day define who you truly are. Plus time is in linear flow, but once Neil deGrasse Tyson said, that every actions you did and doing right now and those actions you're going to make happen will keep on repeating, like if you're riding a bicycle, in every other timeline you will be doing it right now. So in fact if you exist and truly believe that you do is the real subject I'm trying to tell you. We all think we exist, and say what rubish is that? We all do. But have you realised the depth of your existence..?

There is another: The lazy Type: I want to share my story... When I was a kid especially in Math I performed extremely well and even participated in Competitions with great results. My teachers gave me additional tasks when I was finished, and I had fun doing them. But this was it. All I could do was do some additional tasks in school and compete in competitions a few times a year. But especially at home, I did nothing. Mainly because nobody gave me the possibility to do something. I simply didn’t have the resources to do math or learn something new. (I didn’t had access to the internet at that time) And more importantly, without the support of anyone I started to get a lack of motivation. I spent years of my childhood playing computer games and doing nothing. And after I switched school in grade 7, nobody recognized my potential. I became even more lazy without anyone noticing. I can’t remember a single time I did something for school in grade 7 to 10 other than some homework. And the biggest problem with that is, that it worked. I still was one of the best students of my class. It took me until class 10 to fully realize myself, that I was gifted. I kind of knew before, but only then I became fully aware. Also around that time I found my love for math and science again. Problem is that laziness isn’t something you can easily overcome. My whole life I nearly never did something challenging, Even today, I get exhausted when I do something really challenging for more than a few hours. It annoys me to the core that even today I sometimes catch myself being lazy even so I should do something productive. For me being gifted was a curse. Because I was never forced to do something. And by the time I got fully aware of this, it was too late. It is not easy to overcome laziness. And in the recent years I found students with even more extreme cases of this than I have. I know a boy who was absent from school for nearly 70 days this school year and is still one of the best students of his class. Nobody cares because "he is still performing well, so no Problem" I could tell the story of a few other students I met but this comment is already getting pretty long, so I will leave it at that. But the lazy Type is definitely a common group of gifted people. But by the time we realise it ourselves we also become the underground type and don´t tell anyone. By the way: I´m on my way to become a teacher right now.

I think I relate more to type 1, but the thing is that I was never actually learning. My mom is a single mother with two daughters and wanted us to be in a private bilingual school (I'm Latina), so I always thought "she pays what we could use to pay debts". I memorize things but don't actually LEARN, most of the time. Apart from that, she has always been a teacher in the school she puts me in, so I feel pressured for being the teacher's daughter. My family always talks about how great I am, so people have super high expectations of me all the time.

I’m #2 and possibly #4. I dropped out because school just felt so restraining and boring. No room for creativity, fun, and it’s very regulated and programmed. It makes me feel stupid just because I was never a studious type. I did really well when I first started however! I remember loving to read and I really loved school. Elementary was a perfect example of creativity. I learned the best in elementary, given the fact that they made hallways look fun, they gave us fun activities. I’m getting my GED so I can still go to college, but college would be different because I get to choose to enter or drop it legally, and college is going to be the place where I get to learn what I truly admire! It’s the place where you can build your career. The money, the subject, and the job all motivate me to commit to the college life.

Thanks to this video, I know what "to overlook" means. Types? 2 and 3, I guess. I am not sure. As a child I had difficulties in writing properly and, when I read, letters blurred and ran under my eyes. I had to solve this problem by myself, as this still happens. At that time, there were no tests or anything about dislexia or disgraphia or whatever. I kinda solved my reading and writing issues, but as I made it all alone, this was another one, among 100 things, I accomplished and no one cared about. So, I am pretty sure 2 and 3. Some told me that I had talent, but no guide or teacher made a thing to cultivate it. All authorities can do is erase and rewrite and I am not a blank page, I've never been such a thing.

I'm type 5 The Double Labeled Type. I find myself criticizing myself way too much to the point where its unhealthy and destructive. I find myself taking criticism from others way too personally and use it against myself later. Every mistake I make, I criticize myself for. Even the smallest of things. To the point where it just ruins my day. So when I say "I'm fine" I'm really not "fine". What even is " fine anyway? Who's the one who gets to decide what's normal and what's not? Those are questions I think we all want answered.

I feel like I am a mixture of type 1 and 3 because I am very good at school but I don ´t have a lot of friends there. I also suffer from depression and feel bored and frustrated a lot. I know that many other gifted people feel this way. From my experience talking to other gifted people helps a lot because you get the feeling that you are not alone.

I identify most with the autonomous type. I was practically not concerned at all about my reputation at school though I was considered one of if not possibly the best student of my class. I have always prefered working independently and been consciencious since the begining of my secondary school. Now a computer science student at university, I know my strenghs and weaknesses and act/prepare accordingly. If anyone else too indentifies most with the autonomous type, please reply below. Thank you. 💡😎👍

Yeah I identify most with the autonomous type too! Also a computer science student haha. And I find that I do get concerned sometimes about how people perceive me (some social anxiety). But I don't let that stop me from doing what I really need to do.

Wow! I am a strong mix of a type 1, “successful” gifted, because I was always first of the class in school and got a master's degree recently, but with a lot of anxiety and poor emotional intelligence; and a type 5, double-labelled type, since I'm hyperlexic, last year, at 25, I was discovered to be autistic and also think I have some mild ADHD traits.

I FEEL LIKE THE SIXTH TYPE. As soon as I heard autonomous, I immediately thought self-made balance in the body and mind with how flexible they are to the world as well as doing their own thing their own way. Overall, I feel most attached to this one.

I'm number 1 and I've become slightly disinterested in school because they only ever wanted something from me or cared about what I could do rather than seeing me as an actual person. I've come to learn that if you put much out there too much would be expected from you in return, im still trying to give it my all but I'm definitely less motivated than I usually was.😕

While the system and society fail to recognize giftedness as a different way of being, as it is, a different way of constructing our reality by the use of more complicated (Or shall we say, sophisticated) mental schemes and functions, with greater sensitivities, and is just confused with an inherently "superior" way of being, I truly appreciate what the team at Psych2Go has been doing lately for us. In spanish speaking countries like mine the system not only fails thoroughly to recognize giftedness as it is, it pretty much fails to recognize it altogether. Cheers 🥂

I always get bored in class. Everyone knows me, as im always be the best student wherever i go. In secondary school, high school and also here in college. Sometimes, i just want to fail in my subjects so that people dont highly hoped for my success. Because it stressed me out. But, even if i don't really study , i always get the best result in my class. And i think i shouldn't make anyone who hoped in me, get upset with my failure. This makes me become a people pleaser.
