You can get hit by the shell without being first. The shell targets who is in first by the time of release and not by the time it arrives. You can be targeted get hit, passed by someone, be in 3rd place and still get hit by the blue shell.

You missed several: Bullet Bill, Star, Boo, outrunning it on 200cc, the ol' stop and reverse trick to let 2nd take the hit for you, and on not-deluxe MK8, there's also a really funny one: holding onto a blue shell yourself or having someone behind you pull another, as it'll despawn any that've been thrown due to nintendo spaghetti code.

In MKWii my strategy is always "Stay right behind first place and always have a speed item available." Stay behind em to protect against getting blued, and on the final stretch boost past them.

I remember playing with my siblings, and my sister was in second behind me, but then I saw a blue shell on the way, and I had a mushroom in my hand so I did the only logical thing a big brother would do. I slammed the brakes so she went in first, giving her a false sense of hope, but then the shell came and hit her instead. After she got hit, I used the mushroom and speed past, crossing the finish line and winning in first place. Yeah, she wasn't happy with that one.

Fun fact: the mushroom trick doesn’t actually make you out-speed the blue shell. The reason it works is that you get very brief invincibility when you use a mushroom.

That doesn't work. You're still the target by the blue shell. The blue shell targets 1st place upon release and if were targeted and fell behind, you're still going to get hit.

You can also use any of the invincibility items. Also, basically everything you can hit or get hit by does almost the same amount of damage. Getting hit by a blue shell isn't different from getting hit by a green shell. A blue shell is just harder to avoid.

But the blue shell also has a blast radius. The best technique is to slow down enough as when it hits you, you can take other racers with you.

Alternatively, play on 1.0 if your cartridge has that build on it. Yes, you lose all DLC, but at 200cc, a blue shell can literally never reach you.

Jumping off the track is sometimes quicker, but sometimes Lakitu just takes so long to set you down that it isn't always worth it. Especially if you time it poorly and get hit anyway.

You want to know what's crazy? the horn and mushroom methods are 100% intended. In the mobile version of Mario Kart, Mario Kart Rush, you get tips in a dedicated tips segment in the menu, and one of those tips Is "how to avoid a blue shell". there's even achievements for pulling off the dodges.

As someone who drifts like crazy, not staying in first is a horrible idea. Especially amongst my friend group where I spend a lot of time just drift boosting until I have such a huge lead that a blue shell is merely a mild inconvenience at best.
